Over-Booked [95] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

This will probably be my last book haul post of the year!! Can you believe it? In the past few weeks I’ve received some awesome surprises in the mail, as well as some highly anticipated requests, so huge thanks to each and every publisher/publicist who was kind enough to send these my way.

Physical books for review:

I couldn’t be more excited for these five books! Starting off the list, I received a surprise copy of The Wicked King by Holly Black from the NOVL, and I have no idea how that happened, except maybe I entered a giveaway at some point? In any case, I’m thrilled, as Edelweiss turned me down for a review copy (not surprising because Edelweiss doesn’t like me for some reason, lol).

And I’m very excited to have a copy of Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik in my hands! I’ve featured it on several lists here on the blog, and I couldn’t be happier to start reading it.

As you read this post, Firefly: Big Damn Hero by James Lovegrove is my current read. I jumped for joy when Titan Books offered me a review copy, as I am a HUGE Firefly fan. It appears to be the start of a series, so double excitement! Hopefully I can read this quickly and get a review up next week.

A wonderful surprise arrived from Ace Books, Wild Country by Anne Bishop, and I couldn’t figure out at first why they sent it to me. But then I remembered I just requested the paperback edition of the first book in Bishop’s The Others spinoff series, Lake Silence, which I missed when it first came out. I’m excited to get into this series!

And finally, I was giving up hope that I would receive a review copy of King of the Road by R.S. Belcher, but it showed up yesterday, and I just about lost it. King of the Road is already out, but it’s my next read for sure. If you haven’t been following my blog for long, then you might not know that Belcher is one of my favorite writers and he can seriously DO NO WRONG.

Huge thanks to Little, Brown Books for Young Readers/the NOVL, Harper Voyager, Titan Books, Ace Books and Tor!

These beautiful graphic novels arrived from Wunderkind PR, a surprise as I didn’t request them. But I’m going to try to read them because I’m intrigued by the premise. The Jekyll Island Chronicles by Steve Nedvidek, Ed Crowell & Jack Lowe was released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of World War I. They are alternate history graphic novels and feature “an unlikely band of WWI veterans who continue to serve their country by battling an anarchist cabal in a post-war era of invention.” Sounds interesting!

I also received a finished copy of Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri, which I’m sad to say I haven’t read yet. BUT I will be reading this, maybe even in the next few weeks, we’ll see.

I backed the Book Smugglers‘ Kickstarter recently and this week I received my paperback copy of Awakenings. Click the link to learn more about the contributors. I was sad to hear the announcement that the Book Smugglers are ceasing their publishing arm, but apparently they have some new plans in the works. I’m very curious, but sad at the same time.  I also just preordered their final book, a gigantic volume of short stories that they’ve published over the past four years. I splurged on this one, but they are only printing 200 copies. If you’re interested, you can check it out here.

And in MORE sad news, Apex Magazine has stopped publication of their print magazine. I just received the November issue, which has incredible artwork, but I think I’m still getting one more after this. I do realize you can still subscribe to the digital version, but it’s just not the same as holding something in your hands. Ah well…

Thank you to Wunderkind PR and Orbit books!

Digital books for review:

Just a few digital review copies to share this week. Up first is one I’m VERY excited about, Atlas Alone by Emma Newman. This is the fourth book in her Planetfall series, and it’s my understanding this is the last one. This is an excellent SF series, if you haven’t started it yet, and the books are designed so they can be read out of order.

I’m also looking forward to continuing Michael Moreci’s Black Star Renegades series with book two, We Are Mayhem. I had fun with the first book, and I’m curious to see what he does with a sequel.

I was approached by author Grant Price whose debut By The Feet of Men will be published this summer by small press Cosmic Egg Books, and I decided to take a chance on it! It appears to be a post-apocalyptic story and sounds pretty good.

And last but not least, Unsung Stories sent me an e-copy of The Loosening Skin by Aliya Whiteley. Whiteley’s novella The Beauty was nominated for the Shirley Jackson Award in 2014, so she’s no slouch! I’m looking forward to this.

Big thanks to Ace Books, St. Martin’s Press, Cosmic Egg Books and Unsung Stories!

And that’s my book haul this week! I’d love to hear if you plan to read any of these too:-D

  1. Because I don’t read a lot of books from your favorite genres there are always a large amount of books I have never heard of in your hauls. 🙂 They all look really cool so I hope you enjoy them!

I’ve never read Bishop, can you believe it? Everyone loves that series. I think this new one is a spin off so I hope I can just jump in.

  2. King of the Road- new Belcher has me interested. I’ve only read one of his books so far but I liked it. And Wicked King- I still need to read the first one (need to get my butt in gear haha). Hope Polaris rising is good too!

Atlas Alone as well since Before Mars made me a fan. 🙂

I’m looking forward to King of the Road and Atlas Alone (though I have some catching up to do with the Planetfall books). And I’m real curious about Big Damn Hero. Might be time to rewatch the series and movie. Thanks for all the book haul posts throughout the year. These are always a good source of future reading. 🙂

  4. You’re so lucky! I entered that Wicked King NOVL newsletter giveaway as well, but no dice. I did the first one in audio though, so I’ll probably just wait for the listening review copy which should hopefully be available soon. And I was also super excited about receiving King of the Road, it arrived so far past the release date I had just about given up as well. So glad you finally got your copy of Polaris!

I don’t even remember entering that giveaway, but when I saw it was from NOVL it all came back to me. I definitely lucked out, I don’t usually win stuff!

  5. As a HUGE Firefly fan I’m very curious about your thoughts on the novel you’re reading: wary as I am about tie-in books (they almost never seem to catch the… essence of the characters as we see them on screen), I do miss Firefly very much, and would not mind reading a good story (or two, or three…) about the Serenity’s crew… 🙂

  6. This is such an amazing book haul. Edelweiss also hates me, but so happy you won The Wicked Kingon a giveaway. It must have been such a great surprise. It’s so sad when publishers have to close – I used to rep for Blaze Publishing and they closed this year as well.

    Enjoy your new books. 🙂

  7. I want that Holly Black book quite badly. Got turned down on Edelweiss too – boo! Still not long to wait before release so I’ve pre-ordered it.
    Lynn 😀
