The Friday Face-Off: Fire

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “Remember, remember, the fifth of November!” – A cover inspired by Bonfire Night.

Umm, I’m a clueless American who has never heard of Bonfire Night, but it sounds pretty cool. I’m running with the “fire” part of the prompt to find a book with fire on the cover. Not a bonfire, but hopefully this works. I decided to choose Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling, which not only has some covers with the goblet on them, but also a bunch of fire-spewing dragons! Here are some of my favorites:

Pottermore edition 2015 | Bloomsbury edition 2004

Bloomsbury edition 2014 | Swedish edition 2001

Bloomsbury edition 2001 | French edition 2011

Dutch edition 2000 | Danish edition 2001

Scholastic edition 2013 | Bloomsbury edition 2015

First of all, I find it interesting that FOUR of these are Bloomsbury editions! I threw the last two in because they’re so pretty, even if there’s not a hint of fire on the covers. Also, I included the Dutch and Danish editions that show the merfolk, just because I think they’re cool. It’s so hard to choose my favorite, because I honestly love all of these. But, I’m going to pick one of the “fire” covers as a winner:

There’s something about this French cover that I love, the color combination with the yellows and reds, as well as the goblet, which is such a big part of this story.

Let me know which one is your favorite:-D

  1. The Dutch edition is very familiar to me because I used to own that one before I started reading books in English. Blast from the past! But I actually really like the one that I own. It isn’t featured here but it’s by Bloomsbury from 2010. I was fortunate enough to find the boxed set on sale for a good price.

  2. Ah the 5th of November I know is Guy Fawkes night so I guess they must do bonfires but that is about all I know…lol. I think I like the Bloomsbury edition that is black and white with the blue lettering! 🙂

  3. Don’t worry, I also had like zero idea where to go with this week’s theme and had to turn to Lynn for some help! I think you chose well, I think out of the covers featured here that’s the one I find most visually appealing and interesting!

  4. Ooh, I love all of these! I find it particularly interesting that the Dutch & Danish editions show the underwater challenge on that cover–it’s a huge scene, but I feel like it’s one that people don’t often talk about so it’s sort of neat to me to have that on there. I agree with the one you chose, and I also really like the Pottermore and Bloomsbury editions a lot. Fun choice for the topic!

  5. I love this book choice – it hadn’t occurred to me that you wouldn’t necessarily know about Bonfire Night… We are celebrating the fact that Parliament wasn’t blown up by Guy Fawkes and his gang back in 1605 – apparently. My favourite is the black and white cover with that fabulous dragon – I’ve never seen that one before.

I had a feeling that when I saw ‘Fire” I would find Harry Potter books. They are gorgeous! I especially love the Bloomsbury edition 2015!

  7. Ooh great choice! Honestly I love the Pottermore one. It’s got that minimalistic but pretty look I love. But the Bloomsbury 2014 and Scholastic 2013 are beautiful too. And I love that the covers show such a wide range of things—some show the goblet, some the dragons, some the merfolk. You didn’t include the original though! For shame! ;-P

  8. I love it. Would you believe I thought of using this book too but I think I’ve already used it before. And, in spite of knowing all about Bonfire Night I really struggled to find a cover.
