The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “The impossible could not have happened, therefore the impossible must be possible in spite of appearances.” – A cover for a mystery novel.
Lock In by John Scalzi is a futuristic murder mystery with a cool premise: In the future, a virus has swept the world that leaves one percent of its victims “locked in” to their bodies, fully aware but unable to move or speak. I had so much fun with this book, and it’s got some cool covers:
Tor Books (US) 2014 | Thai edition 2017
Portuguese edition 2018 | Japanese edition 2016
German edition 2015 | Italian edition 2016
I like that a lot of these stick with the original red, white and black color scheme. This is a tough one for me to call. I like how clever the Italian edition is, with the plastic toy effect, but ultimately I’m going for the simplicity of the Portuguese cover:
I actually think I like the Tor one best but it’s also the one I’ve seen the most. That Thai one is just too weird for me ๐
Love this! I haven’t seen any other cover for this book than the US version. That Italian one is very interesting but I’m going to have to agree with you on the Portuguese cover. I think it “matches” the book best.

I’m going with the Tor cover. It catches my attention the most. I like your choice too. Makes me kinda think of Terminator:)

Oh, this is a great one to pick! I love the original cover for this one, but the one you picked is really interesting as well. Have a great weekend, Tammy!
Ooo… what an interesting choice of covers for this one – which is a book I absolutely love! I’m going to join the majority – it’s the Tor cover that also gets my vote in that it most effectively demonstrates just how many people were smitten by this horrible illness.
I like the same one you did! ๐
The Tor cover is the one I prefer, even though there are some interesting ones in your list .
Mybe the Japanese cover is the one I find more puzzling…

I like the Portuguese edition the most as well. And the first one too. Those are the ones that would make me pick it up.
Wow! it sure does sound horrific. I am not a big sci-fi fan but the simple Portuguese one is bang on? locked in? It’s a murder mystery so I think the gun is perfect. Idk you read the book so you would know if it illustrates it the best.
I’ve actually been saving up this book for a possible future theme, because just look at all the cool covers! So I had a favorite already, and it was the plastic toy model pieces one ๐
I love the covers and yours is definitely my favourite. It just stood out for me.

I do like that Portuguese cover – no clue what’s up with that Japanese cover though. ๐

It’s wild just how different these covers are from each other. Aside from some of the being red and white, it’s hard to believe that they all go with the same book. All of that said, the one you picked is the same one I would choose., mainly because of the gun and because it stands out by not being red and white, lol.
I love how different covers can be! I love collecting different versions of my favorite books, even when they’re in a language that I cannot read.
