Over-Booked [92] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

This week is a combination of purchases and review copies, and I’m sneaking in a photo of my dog Otis as well. I posted a picture of my other dog Ginger on Twitter last night if you missed her:-) Here are the books that made their way to my doorstep in the last few weeks:

For review:

Huge thanks to Tor.com for granting my wish for a review copy of In An Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire! And they also threw in a few other recent releases which I’m excited to read as well: The Million by Karl Schroeder, The Warrior Within by Angus McIntyre, and The Expert System’s Brother by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

I love when random comments on other blogs lead to a publisher sending me a book I’ve been wanting to read for a while. Such is the case with You Die When You Die by Angus Watson. An Orbit publicist saw a comment I left about this book and sent me a copy:-)

The Beast’s Heart by Leife Shallcross was a surprise from Berkley. I’ve actually already seen a few mixed reviews, so I’m a little hesitant. Let me know if you’ve read this and whether or not I should try it! Thanks to Berkley!

I also got a copy of The Devil’s Thief by Lisa Maxwell, which is book two in her The Last Magician series. I hear this is a wonderful series! I’d love to catch up. Thank you Simon Pulse:-)

Pyr Books kindly sent me a finished copy of No Sleep Till Doomsday by Laurence MacNaughton, the third book in his Dru Jasper series. I am so sorry to admit I haven’t started this series yet, but I know a binge read is on the horizon:-) I’m going to be hosting Laurence on the blog soon to celebrate the release of this book, so stay tuned!

Over the summer I was part of Tor’s #FearlessWomen campaign, and they were kind enough to send some of the books from the promotion, along with a tote and pen. I’m excited since I didn’t get to read these at the time, and I’m especially excited about The Calculating Stars and The Fated Sky by Mary Robinette Kowal! Also in the package were The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton and City of Lies by Sam Hawke. Huge thanks to Tor!

Purchased:

Otis is pretty excited about these books too! First up, the September Apex Magazine. If you love fantasy artwork, you really should be subscribing to this magazine. The cover art each month is worth twice the cost of admission, in my opinion!

I preordered Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor, because I wanted the UK hardcover with sprayed edges to match my UK edition of Strange the Dreamer. I also bought a copy of We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix, I freaking loved this book and I HAD to have a physical copy, especially when I heard it was going to have black sprayed edges. It’s beyond beautiful, if you’ve read this book and loved it, I recommend purchasing a copy before this edition sells out. Who knows if they’ll do sprayed edges if it goes into a second printing?

Finally, I splurged on a copy of Transcription by Kate Atkinson. This is another UK edition and it’s also signed by the author. If you love limited edition books, you should check out Goldsboro Books for beautiful UK editions. Atkinson has always been a favorite author of mine, but as is the case lately, I haven’t read anything new of hers since I started blogging. At least I have a copy for someday!

And because you can’t see the edges in the above photo:

And that’s my book haul this week! Let me know if you’ve read any of these:-D

  1. Aww, Otis is cute!!!

Great book haul, especially impressed by the books from the Fearless Women campaign. I also received a copy of The Devil’s Thief and I had not previously heard of the series but it looks interesting.

    Happy reading!

  2. I completely agree with your comment regarding Apex’s artworks, they’re always fabulous! I would definitely buy the print version if I lived in the States! 🙂
I love the UK Muse of Nightmare edition, it’s so pretty *___*

I’d love to hear how you like The Lies of Locke Lamora, I have a copy but haven’t read it yet.

  3. I got a copy of The Devil’s Thief as well and was so excited until I realized it was a sequel and I haven’t read the first book. Guess I have some catching up to do as well 🙂 And I also got a copy of The Beast’s Heart, a book I’m actually really looking forward to. And wow, I can see why you bought those books, I love the stained page edges!

We Sold Our Souls is probably the most beautiful physical copy I own. It’s gorgeous inside too.

  4. Some good looking books here as always and you are right, those sprayed edges are awesome. I have a e-arc of he Beast’s Heart and I hope I enjoy it. I love Beauty and the Beast so there’s a good chance I’m either going to love it or hate it – probably no in between. I’ve heard wonderful things about the Lisa Maxwell series.

Me too, I know Lisa Maxwell’s series has really high GR ratings. I’d love to try and find the first book so I can read this one.

  5. Great haul. The Beast’s Heart – I liked it but I had a few issues that stopped me from completely loving it. I love the fairytale and this keeps fairly true to the story. It’s got a slow pace and the writing almost feels like a classic which isn’t to everyone’s tastes but I liked it and it is without doubt a love story. These are things that I didn’t mind, I don’t mind a slow build or quite descriptive passages. I think my bugbears were – the beast was too much of a pushover and was alway pussyfooting around and the curse had been changed here and felt off somehow. I think I rated it a 4 but I can see it wouldn’t be to everyone’s tastes. I recall really enjoying the sisters’ chapters in this.

I’m definitely going to try it out. I don’t think it comes out in the US until next February so I have some time to fit it in. Thanks for your thoughts on it!

  6. oh your book haul is beautiful especially Muse of Nightmares! and of course now I’m curious about We Sold our Souls because I’ve heard so much about My Best Friend’s Exorcism! I had to add it to the TBR too. oh Man your hauls are bad for my TBR Tammy!

  7. I also got The Million, but you could say I didn’t fall in love with that book. Oh wow, random comments get you books? Man, I wish that happened to internationals 🙂 Tor.com is the only publisher that mails me at all! But I guess it’s great they do 🙂

Oh wow, those stained pages look AMAZING!!

I was replying comments today, saw a looooot of your comments and wanted to thank you. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to visit! Life has been super hectic lately, I almost don’t get any free time at all anymore.
