The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “There’s more of gravy than of grave about you.” – A cover featuring a ghost or spectre.
Another tough week for some reason! I went back to an older book for inspiration and found it in Richard Matheson’s Hell House. Hell House was originally published in 1971 and is a haunted house story. Some of the images I found definitely fit in the “ghost/spectre” category, take a look:
Tor Books 1999 | Bantam paperback 1972
Serbian edition 2010 | Finnish edition 1990
French edition 1984 | Warner Books (English) 1985
There are some super creepy covers for this book, but I think the creepiest is the Tor Books edition, which is also my favorite:
Oh well done! I found this one a real stinker… I agree with your choice – some of them are definitely a bit OTT, aren’t they? It’s the lighting and detailed artwork that lifts the Tor cover. Have a great weekend, Tammy:)
Thanks Sarah! I think the Tor cover wins this time around:-)
Awesome that you went back so far. I read this years and years ago and yep, it’s the Tor version you picked which sits happily on my shelves. For some reason the Warner one makes me chuckle.
Yes, you have to love the Warner edition for how ridiculous it is!
I agree with your fav, though I do like the Serbian cover as well.
These are the best two, definitely:-)
I agree with your choice, but the Serbian edition is a close second! I like the castle house, but it doesn’t seem to portray the scariness that the other covers have

The Serbian cover is coming in second:-)
I would definitely agree with your choice! I really love the castle/mansion/whatever it is on the Serbian edition, but it’s not quite as creepy as others. I think the longer I look at the Tor cover, the more and more I like it!

Yes! I love that cover, it’s got so many scary elements to it!
I would choose the Tor Books edition as well and I think the Serbian edition is looking great as well with the castle/mansion and everything.
That house on the Serbian edition definitely gives me the creeps:-)
I have to go with Warner Books (1085) I love those old time pulp covers!

I actually love those too! Covers have really changed over the years, it’s fun to see the differences.
I love your choice and also the Serbian cover – it’s just so ominous.
Lynn 😀
I love the Serbian cover also, it scares me to death!
I agree, the Tor cover is my favorite one too.
Lauren @ Always Me
It’s pretty terrifying, right?
The Tor one is definitely my favorite, although I appreciate the campy quality of the pulp covers.
Agreed, you have to love the campy covers!
Covers with Ghosts are my favorite! oh I should be checking out these books! Tor for me as well!

I need to read more ghost stories, for some reason I never think about it until October:-)
Nice pick. All the ones on the left are definitely winners for me. They even make me want to pick ’em up and read ’em! 😛
