The Friday Face-Off: Ghost/Spectre

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme:  “There’s more of gravy than of grave about you.” – A cover featuring a ghost or spectre.

Another tough week for some reason! I went back to an older book for inspiration and found it in Richard Matheson’s Hell House. Hell House was originally published in 1971 and is a haunted house story. Some of the images I found definitely fit in the “ghost/spectre” category, take a look:

Tor Books 1999 | Bantam paperback 1972

Serbian edition 2010 | Finnish edition 1990

French edition 1984 | Warner Books (English) 1985

There are some super creepy covers for this book, but I think the creepiest is the Tor Books edition, which is also my favorite:

What do you think? Which is your favorite cover?

  1. Oh well done! I found this one a real stinker… I agree with your choice – some of them are definitely a bit OTT, aren’t they? It’s the lighting and detailed artwork that lifts the Tor cover. Have a great weekend, Tammy:)

  2. Awesome that you went back so far. I read this years and years ago and yep, it’s the Tor version you picked which sits happily on my shelves. For some reason the Warner one makes me chuckle.

I actually love those too! Covers have really changed over the years, it’s fun to see the differences.

I need to read more ghost stories, for some reason I never think about it until October:-)
