Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
I’m keeping it small this week! I’ve been pretty good about not requesting new books because I’m so behind, but I do have a few new things to share:
Physical books for review:
I was excited to get a surprise copy of Starless by Jacqueline Carey in the mail. Starless is part of the #FearlessWomen campaign from Tor Books, and it’s actually scheduled to drop this coming Tuesday. I plan to read it soon, but I may not get to it until next month—hey, just keeping it real! But I’m super excited. Thanks to Tor!
I’ve heard really good things about A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White, which is being compared to Firefly. And some five-star reviews on Goodreads are definitely making me anxious to dive in! Thank you Orbit!
And a surprise from Tor Teen arrived, a book that grabbed my attention a few months ago when I saw this awesome cover. Dive Smack by Demetra Brodsky is a YA thriller that sounds fantastic. Plus there’s a whole bunch of five-star, rave reviews on Goodreads, so I may slip this into my schedule. Big thanks to Tor Teen!
Digital copies for review:
A trio of new NetGalley approvals really made me happy! I’m being very choosy but I couldn’t resist these:
The Chrysalis by Brendan Deneen has some mixed reviews already on Goodreads, but I’m hoping it gets more positive ink before its September release date.
The Lantern’s Ember by Colleen Houck sounds really good. Have any of you read her Tiger’s Curse or Reawakened series? I love this cover and it’s about a boy who makes a deal with the devil, so it should be fun.
Fire & Heist by Sarah Beth Durst. I’ve heard so many great things about her Queens of Renthia series, that I’m excited to be checking out her latest. This doesn’t come out until December so I probably won’t be reading it any time soon, but still. I love the dragon in the shape of an ampersand!
Books from Phoenix Comic Fest:
I shared the top two books in my Phoenix Comic Fest wrap up post, ARCs of Nightingale by Amy Lukavics and Kill the Farm Boy by Delilah S. Dawson and Kevin Hearne. And the rest are purchases. Victoria Schwab was lovely as always and she signed my copy of Vicious! I completely missed John Scalzi but bought a copy of Redshirts just because I really want to read it. And meeting Kristi Charish was a highlight for me! Her publisher wasn’t giving anything away but I decided to buy a copy of Owl and the Electric Samurai, simply because I never got around to reading the second book in her Owl series. Del Rey was giving away copies of older books, so I chose The Waking Land by Callie Bates which I have not read. And finally, I’ve been meaning to read Amy Lukavics’ The Ravenous so I was thrilled to meet her and get my copy signed. All in all, a fun time!
Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe is a new one for me, and looks promising! I’ll have to check that one out. 🙂 And ooh Owl and the Electric Samurai- I read the first Owl book. That would be cool to meet Charish!

She was really nice, and I just love her books. I hope her book does well when it’s released in the US.
Like Greg, A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe is new to me, as is the author. I’m always a little suspicious of comparisons, but I’ve missed Firefly so I’d give this a try, see if it can fill a small part of that hole.
Me too, I really miss Firefly! I need to pull out my DVDs and binge watch:-)
Great haul with lots of books I haven’t heard of! 🙂
Hopefully something has caught your interest:-)
You got to meet V.E. Schwab? And get your copy of Vicious signed?? That’s so cool! I might just be a tad envious. 😉
The Waking Land was very good, one of the better debut novels I read last year. So I hope you’ll like it as well. And I can’t wait to read your review of Starless, whenever it’s ready!

Victoria Schwab really gets around, I’ve met her at least three times at different events. Keep you eyes open, you never know when she’ll be nearby:-)
I just recently heard about A Big Ship, and it sounds good! So does Lantern’s Ember! Can’t wait to see your thoughts!
Thanks Kristen, I hope both are fun reads:-)
I’m thinking the same about Dive Smack – not really my typical sort of read, but it sounds really good and the reviews so far have been pretty positive. It looks like a quick read too so I’m definitely going to try and fit it in. Also got my copy of Starless and I can’t wait to dive in!

I hope we love Starless! And Dive Smack as well. I can’t get over all the 5 star reviews on GR, that definitely got my attention!
I spy A Big Ship! 😀 And very jealous about that finished copy of Starless. It looks REALLY good!
It does look good, I can’t wait to dive in:-)
Kill the Farm Boy is a really cool title for a fantasy novel. My immediate reaction was “Why?” I had to hop over to Goodreads and see what it’s about. Now I want to read it.
It is a funny title, but I think it makes sense knowing how crazy funny the authors are:-)
I’m actually reading The Calculating Stars now (by Tor), and I’m sure you’d enjoy that title. I think you should be getting a copy because you’re participating in #FearlessWomen? I’m a little behind with reading it and I have to post the review soon though xD but I think I’ll make it. I hope! been a busy week.
The cover of The Lantern’s Ember! Wow! Amazing.
Oh yay, you bought Redshirts – I hope I don’t miss the review. I loved that book, and I’m curious about your thoughts on the ending.

I’m really excited to read your review of The Calculating Stars, I can’t wait to read it:-) I’m glad you’ve read Redshirts, I’ve seen some mixed reviews but it’s a spoof on Star Trek, right? I’m a HUGE Star Trek fan:-)
Oh yeah! It’s sort of like a parody, I guess? If you like Star Trek, you will roll in laughter and adore Redshirts! I haven’t even really watched Star Trek and I adored it 😀 I super want to see your review now when you finish it. Please just spam me with the link so I don’t miss it 😀
And I have Calculating Stars scheduled for the 27th!

Oh, so excited for Starless! When my copy arrives I might just have to push everything else to the side. It’s been a while since I’ve been this excited about a book release and I hope it doesn’t let me down.
I’m also very much looking forward to A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe. Hope you enjoy and looking forward to your thoughts on them!
Early reviews are pretty good for Starless, I hope we both love it!
I hate your book haul posts in the best way possible.
I’m dying to get my hands on A Big Ship. I recently finished Firefly (I can’t believe I waited so long to watch it) and LOVED every second of it, so anything being compared to it I have to get my hands on!
Ha ha, sorry Nadine! Oh wow, I’m so glad you loved Firefly! I am a HUGE fan and I have the whole thing on DVD. Time for a rewatch!
Nice haul! I can’t wait to see what you think of The Lantern’s Ember. That’s one I’m really excited for.
Me too, and the cover is one of my recent favorites:-)
So many good looking books. I really should make time to read an Amy Lukavics book. I’m pretty sure I bought The Ravenous. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on The Chrysalis.
I’m a little worried about The Chrysalis because the reviews aren’t that great, but I’m trying it anyway.
Kill the Farm Boy sounds like it’s going to be awesome! Happy reading, Tammy!
I got Redshirts and Vicious on my TBR too! That’s a pretty cool haul at the convention, Tammy! Also super curious about A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White. I wonder what you’ll think of it. 😀
