The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “After a good dinner, one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations.” – a cover featuring a family
There was only one choice for me this week, although I’m betting I’m not the only one to think of this book. Spoonbenders by Daryl Gregory is about a family of psychics, and it’s one of my favorite books from last year. If you haven’t read it, I BEG you to check it out. Here are some of the awesome covers I found:
2017 Knopf | 2017 Riverrun (UK)
2018 Czarna Owca (Polish) | 2018 Eichborn (German)
2018 Quercus paperback | 2018 Blackie Books (Spanish)
These are all really interesting and highlight different aspects of the story. I like the Spanish version because it gives the book a “superhero” feel, and I love the quirkiness of the Polish and German editions. (Strangely, the Knopf American edition is my least favorite). But for me, the UK edition nails the spirit of the story, and it’s my favorite:
I wish it was Friday haha 😀 and I haven’t read the book, but I am currently reading a book called Sheer Dynamite where they call telekinetics “spoon-benders” in kind of a derogatory way. I really like the cover of the Spanish one because the portraits show the abilities (I think?) and it looks super cool!

I may have to check out Sheer Dynamite!
I love how keen you are, Tammy! And this is a smashing book, I really enjoyed it:). My favourite cover is the German one – the wallpaper is spot on for a 1970s vibe and I love the way the pictures give us extra insights into the family dynamic. The Spanish one is okay – but my grizzle is that the silhouettes are more appropriate for the Victorian era, rather than the 70s…
Yes, the German cover definitely caught my eye as well. I love the quirkiness of it:-)
I love the typeface for the spanish edition but I think I’m partial to the Polish one. Love that muted pastel look!
I love that typeface too, and it fits the story:-)
I chose this book too (and the same winner)! When I saw the theme I immediately thought of the Telemachuses. Such a quirky and interesting family!

Thinking about this book makes me wonder when Gregory’s NEXT book is coming out, I need a fix!
They all shine with oddness hahah It does make me want to try it someday though! 😀

“Odd” is a good word for this book, lol.
I really like the Spanish version as well. I know my library has this one so maybe I’ll grab it soon and feature it on a Sidetracked Sunday review.

I think you’d like this Barb! The “psychic” parts aren’t really that big, the story is really about the family relationships. And super funny too!
This sounds great! And my favourite is the same as your favourite! Followed by the Quercus paperback.

This book rocks, I highly recommend ANYTHING by Daryl Gregory:-)
Yep, this book really does rock. I loved it. I really like the Spanish cover – not seen that one before this week’s theme.
Lynn 😀
I think the Knopf one is my least favorite too. But you’re right that the Polish and German ones are fun in a quirky way! I haven’t read the book, but the UK one is my fave cover too!

I haven’t seen those covers of Spoonbenders before. One of these days I’d like to try it out. 🙂
