It’s April??!? March seems like the lost month to me, but I’m back on track and ready for lots of great April releases. In my personal life, only two months remain in the school year, and I know they’ll go by in a heartbeat. The weather in California is simply gorgeous right now and I’m enjoying it while it lasts, because I know the scorching hot weather is just around the corner.
As for what’s on my plate this month? An over-abundance of review books, for one! But I’m not complaining. Some of my most anticipated books of the year come out this month (The Fireman! Sleeping Giants! Fellside!) so stay tuned for lots of gushy reviews.
Due to my lack of March reviews, I’m putting off my Book Review Giveaway until next month. I may have two winners, we’ll see how the bank account looks at that time:-) So here’s what I’ll be reading this month:
The Fireman by Joe Hill. This is high on my list! I’m a huge Joe Hill fan and I’ve heard some reviewers compare his latest to The Stand. This is the longest book I’ll read this month, at nearly 800 pages, but if it’s anything like his other books, those pages will go by quickly.
Fellside by M.R. Carey. This book is up next, as it’s an early April release. I am a HUGE fan of The Girl with All the Gifts, so I’m curious to see what he’s done this time around.
Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel. So funny thing, I picked up an ARC of this book at last year’s SDCC in July, so I’ve had my copy for almost a year! I can’t wait to finally read it.
Railhead by Philip Reeve. Wow. I just finished this book and it BLEW. ME. AWAY. This book is destined to be a classic, in my opinion. Reeve’s writing is absolutely perfect and the story had EVERYTHING I look for in a book. I’m not hearing much Railhead, which is being published by small(ish) press Switch Press, but I intend to make some noise about it. My review will be up soon!
Masks and Shadows by Stephanie Burgis. I recently decided to check out the first chapter, and I am HOOKED. I love Burgis’ writing and I am super excited to read the rest.
Down with the Shine by Kate Karyus Quinn. This YA called to me the minute I saw this fantastic cover. This is another book that releases at the end of the month, but I’m not sure I can wait that long to pick it up:-)
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. I’ve already read this and you can read my review here if you missed it. I absolutely adored this odd and magical story about teens who have been through magical doorways and lived in other realms, only to be kicked out of them. Now they are trying to rebuild their lives in the real world at a school just for them.
The Days of Tao by Wesley Chu. I’m a huge fan of Chu’s Tao series (well who isn’t??) and this novella is set in the same world. I’m pretty excited to jump back in!
Mr. Fahrenheit by T. Michael Martin. It seems like I’ve had this ARC on my Kindle FOREVER. But now it’s finally time to see if the publisher’s blurb “Stephen King meets Super 8” is for reals.
Arena by Holly Jennings. Although I’m not a gamer, and this book has strong gaming elements to it, I’m very curious to read it. I haven’t see overwhelmingly great reviews, but I’ll check it out anyway.
Daughters of Ruin by K.D. Castner. A story about four princesses who live together as sisters, but who can’t get along? Sounds like a great concept.
Tor.com novellas:
There are a couple of Tor.com novellas out this month. I will definitely be reading The Jewel and Her Lapidary by Fran Wilde, and if time permits, I may try The Emperor’s Railroad by Guy Haley.
Are you planning to read any of these? I’d love to know:-)
I heard about Sleeping Giants last year and it’s been on my list ever since, I am really looking forward to reading it and curious to read your review. Hope you enjoy it 🙂
I’m excited too, I hear it’s a bit strange, but I enjoy strange, so we’ll see!
I have arcs of The Fireman and Sleeping Giants. I plan on reading them early May. So many you listed are on my watchlist – Fellside, Masks and Shadows, Down with the Shine and Every Heart a Doorway. Too many books and not enough time!!!!!!!

I know!!! We need to freeze time so we can read everything:-)
Quite looking forward to Fellside: I loved M.R. Carey’s previous book and from what I read this one is just as intriguing.

I just started it and it’s quite different from his other book, but it still has his great storytelling:-)
I’ve just finished Fellside and need to review. Currently reading Sleeping Giants which is different than I expected. Not sure yet as I’ve only read first 10/15% so far – very quick reading though. Fireman and Masks and Shadows are next I think and I’m really looking forward to both. I want that Down with the Shine book – something about it really appeals to me *grabby hands*!
Daughters of Ruin sounds rather good too! Plus drawn to the cover.
Lynn 😀
I’m reading Fellside right now. The Fireman is so long I need to start it soon! I’m very curious about Sleeping Giants too.
Looking forward to your thoughts on Masks & Shadows and Daughters of Ruin! Both of those books have been on my radar.
Masks & Shadows is really good so far. I just tried the first chapter but I’ll go back soon and read the whole thing:-)
I loved The Fireman, look forward to hearing what you think of it! 🙂

Oh good! I know it’s pretty long, which scares me, but hopefully it’s a pageturner:-)
Big month ahead! I think half my review books for April are released on the 5th – heh, why are months always so front loaded with new books? 😀 And I really need to read more Tor.com novellas, they always seem to slip through my reading schedule!

I know, I wish publishers would spread things out more, I am always caught off guard with those first of the month books, LOL. The problem I’m having with Tor.com is that I forget to download them before the link expires, or I download them too soon and then the book expires. I need to get a little more organized, ha ha!
This is my situation EXACTLY with Tor.com novellas! I need to make a calendar system to remind me of when to download, when they expire!

I got review copies for those novellas too! It was my first time getting digital copies from Tor.com so I had NO IDEA about that expiration until I downloaded them… good thing they are novellas and can be read in a day XD
Luckily they are happy to send you the link again if it expires. I’ve had to do that more than once:-)
