Future Fiction #287 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Today I have two cute sounding cozy fantasies and a queer thriller, take a look:

From the author of The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy comes a new heartwarming fantasy rom-com with an opposites-attract twist set in the delightful world of Tanria.

Immortal demigod Rosie Fox has been patrolling Tanria for decades, but lately, the job has been losing its luster. After one hundred and fifty-seven years of being alive, everything is beginning to lose its luster. When Rosie dies (again) by electrocution (again) after poking around inside a portal choked with shadowy thorns only she can see, she feels stuck in the rut that is her unending life.

Thanks to Rosie’s meddling, the portal’s inventor, Dr. Adam Lee, must come in person to repair the damage. When all the portals begin to break down, he declares an emergency evacuation of Tanria. In the mad rush to get out, Rosie and Adam end up trapped inside the Mist. Together.

And uptight Adam Lee in his bespoke menswear seems to know a lot more about what’s happening than he lets on….

Rosie is determined to crack the shell of his cool exterior. But the more she learns about Adam, the more she realizes that they both have personal histories as tangled and thorny as the plant that has them trapped inside the Mist. Maybe two people who have found themselves stuck in this life can find a way to unstick each other … just when their time on this earth seems to be running out.

The Undercutting of Rosie and Adam (The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy #3) by Megan Bannen. Releases in July 2025 from Orbit. This one’s a year away, lol, but I had to share it since the cover was just revealed. I’m behind and haven’t read book #2 yet, but I hope to read it soon. I believe the books in this series can be read as standalones, and this one sounds like fun.

A delightful queer romantic fantasy full of friends-to-lovers chemistry, found family, rival family drama, and cozy garden magic from two acclaimed YA authors making their debut in the adult space.

Yael Clauneck is the only scion of an obscenely wealthy banking family with its fingers in every pie in the realm. They’re on the precipice of a predetermined life when they flee their own graduation party, galloping away in search of…well, they’re not sure, but maybe the chance to feel like life can still be a grand adventure.

Margot Greenwillow—talented plant witch, tea lover, and greenhouse owner—has never felt further from adventure in her life. She’s been desperately trying to keep what remains of her family’s magic remedies business afloat. So when her childhood friend and former crush, Yael, rides back into her life, she’s shocked. But perhaps this could be a good thing. After all, Margot could use an assistant in the greenhouses.

Yael has no experience or, honestly, practical skills, but they’re delighted to accept. They can lay low for a while, flirting with Margot while they figure out what to do next. Meanwhile, Margot has plans of her own—but plans are notoriously unreliable things, unlikely to survive a swiftly blooming mutual attraction, not to mention the machinations of parents determined to get their heir back . . . no matter the cost.

Homegrown Magic by Jamie Pacton & Rebecca Podos. Releases in March 2025 from Del Rey. Another cozy fantasy that sounds like fun. I love this cover, although I can’t understand why the authors’ names are so small…

Where beauty lies, secrets are held…ugly ones.

Sol Reyes has had a rough year. After a series of workplace incidents at her university lab culminates in a plagiarism accusation, Sol is put on probation. Dutiful visits to her homophobic father aren’t helping her mental health, and she finds her nightly glass of wine becoming more of an all-day—and all-bottle—event. Her wife, Alice Song, is far more optimistic. After all, the two finally managed to buy a house in the beautiful, gated community of Maneless Grove.

However, the neighbors are a little too friendly in Sol’s opinion. She has no interest in the pushy Homeowners Association, their bizarrely detailed contract, or their never-ending microaggressions. But Alice simply attributes their pursuit to the community “Invest in a neighborly spirit”…which only serves to irritate Sol more.

Suddenly, a number of strange occurrences—doors and stairs disappearing, roots growing inside the house—cause Sol to wonder if her social paranoia isn’t built on something more sinister. Yet Sol’s fears are dismissed as Alice embraces their new home and becomes increasingly worried instead about Sol’s drinking and manic behavior. When Sol finds a journal in the property from a resident that went missing a few years ago, she realizes why they were able to buy the house so easily…

Through Sol’s razor-sharp tongue and macabre sense of humor, Tirado explores the very real pressures to assimilate with one’s surroundings to “survive,” while also asking the  Is it survival when you’re no longer your true self? Because in Maneless Grove, either you become a good neighbor—or you die.

We Came to Welcome You by Vincent Tirado. Releases in September 2024 from William Morrow. This has comparisons like Midsommer and Jordan Peele, so I feel like it will either be really good or really bad, lol. Still, I’m very curious!

I could barely see the names to type them, lol. I hope the publisher redoes the cover to make them bigger.

  1. I love a good cherry pie, but I have to say I’d be hard pressed to try the pie in “We Came to Welcome You.” 🙂

  2. Homegrown Magic looks like fun! I read the first Undertaking book, and have been on the fence so far about whether I want to continue. I suppose I’ll hold off until I start seeing reviews for #2 before deciding. Great picks!

Thanks Lisa! I’m looking forward to reading the second Hart and Mercy book, although I’m already feeling behind, lol.

I think the Hart and Mercy books are standalones, but I could be wrong. I did love the first book and I hope I can read the rest!

  3. I really want to read the Megan Bannen series one day but I’m currently planning to be sensible and pick up Bird & The Blade first as I own that one. Hopefully the last of these will end up being really good, not really bad it sounds like it could use the unreliable narrator aspect which is intriguing.

  4. I love the sound of Home Grown Magic – thank you for sharing these three books, Tammy. The cover for We Came to Welcome You is fabulously horrible:)).

I didn’t mention the pie on the cover of We Came to Welcome You, but it is fabulously horrible!
