Future Fiction #28: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Another Wednesday, and three more cool cover reveals to share:

The Man in the High Castle meets Pacific Rim in this action-packed alternate history novel from the award-winning author of United States of Japan and Mecha Samurai Empire.

NO ONE SURVIVES AN ALLIANCE WITH THE NAZIS. NOT WITHOUT USE OF FORCE.

California, 2020. After a severe injury, ace mecha designer and pilot Reiko Morikawa is recruited to a secret organization plotting a revolt against the corrupt governor (and Nazi sympathizer) of the United States of Japan. When their plan to save the USJ from itself goes awry, the mission is only saved from failure because the governor is killed by an assassin known as Bloody Mary. But the assassin isn’t satisfied with just the governor.

Bishop Wakana used to be a cop. Now he’s an agent of the Tokko, the secret police. Following the trail of a Nazi scientist, Bishop discovers a web of weapons smuggling, black market mecha parts–and a mysterious assassin. This killer once hunted Nazis but now seems to be targeting the USJ itself. As the leaders of the United States of Japan come to realize the devil’s bargain they made in their uneasy alliance with the Nazis, Bishop and Reiko are hot on the trail of Bloody Mary, trying to stop her before it’s too late.

Cyber Shogun Revolution by Peter Tieryas. Releases in March 2020 from Ace Books. If you haven’t read Mecha Samurai Warrior yet, then you are missing one of the most fun times you’ll ever have with a book! This appears to be a standalone set in the same world, Tieryas’ United States of Japan. I can hardly wait to get my hands on this! Cover art by John Liberto.

Supernatural meets Stranger Things in award-winning author S. A. Hunt’s Burn the Dark, first in the Malus Domestica horror action-adventure series about a punk YouTuber on a mission to bring down witches, one vid at a time.

Robin is a YouTube celebrity gone-viral with her intensely-realistic witch hunter series. But even her millions of followers don’t know the truth: her series isn’t fiction.

Her ultimate goal is to seek revenge against the coven of witches who wronged her mother long ago. Returning home to the rural town of Blackfield, Robin meets friends new and old on her quest for justice. But then, a mysterious threat known as the Red Lord interferes with her plans….

Burn the Dark (Malus Domestica #1) by S.A. Hunt. Releases in January 2020 from Tor Books. I’m so curious about this book because it deals with a famous YouTuber, and you would think in today’s YouTube crazy society there would be more books about them. In any case, this has won me over with these key words: “witches,” “punk” and “YouTube celebrity.” Plus, the cover is so gorgeous! Chuck Wendig did the cover reveal here, and this glorious artwork is by Leo Nickolls.

Finna is a rambunctious, touching story that blends all the horrors the multiverse has to offer with the everyday awfulness of low-wage work. It explores queer relationships and queer feelings, capitalism and accountability, labor and love, all with a bouncing sense of humor and a commitment to the strange.

When an elderly customer at a big box furniture store slips through a portal to another dimension, it’s up to two minimum-wage employees to track her across the multiverse and protect their company’s bottom line. Multi-dimensional swashbuckling would be hard enough, but those two unfortunate souls broke up a week ago.

To find the missing granny, Ava and Jules will brave carnivorous furniture, swarms of identical furniture spokespeople, and the deep resentment simmering between them. Can friendship blossom from the ashes of their relationship? In infinite dimensions, all things are possible.

Finna by Nino Cipri. Releases in February 2020 from Tor.com. This sounds so crazy I just know I’m going to love it. Plus, it looks like the “big box furniture store” is an IKEA stand-in, and you know how weird and crazy IKEA is! This is going on my “must read” list for sure. Cover art by Carl Wiens.

  1. omg, are you kidding me, Burn The Dark looks FABULOUS. the Stranger Things reference had me intrigued, but wow, what a great unique concept! I like when social media is incorporated into books, the last one I remember that really went big on this was An Absolutely Remarkable Thing.

I honestly don’t think I’ve read a book that deals with a YouTuber, which is sort of surprising, I hope it’s as good as it sounds:-)

  2. Sia

I hadn’t heard of it until right this second, but DAMN, Burn the Dark looks (and sounds) incredible! Really creepy-beautiful cover!

And I was already anticipating Finna, but I love the cover! It feels sneakily clever to use the pipes to mimic the idea of wormholes etc, but keep it tied to the hardware store. I love it!

  3. The Man in the High Castle meets Pacific Rim sounds like such a crazy mash up that it just might work- but I think of all these, Finna sounds the most exciting. Great picks this week!

  4. Oooh, I hadn’t heard of Burn The Dark, but gosh does that sound fantastic! You had me at Stranger Things x Supernatural haha. Definitely going on my TBR. That’s one heck of a book cover, too. I love it! These posts are always so bad for my poor TBR. Have mercy. 😛

  5. All three covers look amazing! Finna is one that I especially want to read. A big box store is a perfect setting for otherworldly happenings. Ever since reading Horrorstor, I haven’t been able to drive past an Ikea without a shudder. 🙂

  6. You’ve got me again. I just added Finna and Burn the Dark. I mean, who can resist a Supernatural/Stranger Things type read. Have you watched the new season of Stranger Things yet???

    • Tammy

Not yet!! I can’t believe I haven’t, maybe this weekend. I’m not sure what’s stopping me!

That cover for Burn the Dark is so pretty, that color just makes me want to keep staring at it!

    • Tammy

I was so surprised! I follow the author on Instagram and he announced the cover reveal. And I was like “what a new book??”

    • Tammy

I do too, I have read some really good YA sci fi, but there isn’t a lot out there for some reason.

  7. Anything with witches sign me up. And, I did read the first Peter Tieryas book but then missed out on the second so as usual I’m now behind. Must catch up – I love the sound of this next one.
    Lynn 😀
