Over-Booked [103] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It’s been a month since my last book haul post, and I’m not sure what happened, but my digital review pile in particular has exploded! Thanks to NetGalley and Edelweiss for making it impossible for me to keep my TBR under control;-) Here are the latest books I’ve received from publishers, and a couple of purchases:

Physical books for review:

Two exciting titles, courtesy of Orbit!

The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t With Her Mind by Jackson Ford. I’m in the middle of this now and hope to have a review up next week. This book is crazy fun, and I do mean crazy!

Also out this month from Orbit is Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O’Keefe. I’ll be reading this by the end of the month as well, and I’ve already heard really good things about it.

I get the best surprises from my DAW/Ace publicist, and Life and Limb by Jennifer Roberson just showed up in the mail. You might remember I recently featured this in a Future Fiction post. Thrilled to have a copy!

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey. I won this ARC from Bookish First (and you’re not seeing double, I also preordered a finished copy below). I’m a little behind and had hoped to read it by release date, but it’s coming up very soon on the pile.

Another cool surprise from DAW, The Gossamer Mage by Julie E. Czerneda is coming out later in the summer. This will be my first Czerneda book, believe it or not!

Titans by Kate O’Hearn was a surprise arrival from Aladdin Books. This is the start of a new middle grade series, and it may be a spin-off of O’Hearn’s Pegasus books (which I’m not familiar with). This looks like fun, although my summer reading is pretty busy so we’ll see if I have time. But don’t you love the cover?

Big thanks to Orbit, DAW, Bookish First and Tor Books, and Aladdin/Simon & Schuster.

Huge thanks to Tor.com for this wonderful surprise package of upcoming novellas! I rarely get physical books from them so this was very exciting:

Two of these I’ve featured on Future Fiction, Ormeshadow by Priya Sharma and Made Things by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Both sound really good! The Killing Light by Myke Cole is the third in his series, which unfortunately I’m not reading, although I’ve heard nothing but good things.

In the “purchase” pile I have three cool things to share: First up, my preorder of Magic for Liars arrived, and the second photo shows the beautiful star end papers on the inside of that book. I love surprises like this when I buy a new book! Also, I have a Magic for Liars special preorder incentive pin coming!

My Kickstarter fulfillment for Do Not Go Quietly edited by Jason Sizemore and Lesley Conner arrived this week. Isn’t it gorgeous? I mentioned this months ago when the Kickstarter was live, and I finally have it in my hands:-D

And I also preordered Charlaine Harris’ latest from Subterranean Press, Small Kingdoms. These are linked stories and I’m very curious.

Digital books for review:

First up, four sequels that I’m ridiculously excited about:

Aurora Blazing by Jessie Mihalik, book two in Mihalik’s sci-fi romance series, Consortium Rebellion. As soon as this popped up on Edelweiss, I sent in a request, and luckily it was approved. I loved the first book in the series, Polaris Rising, and I’m excited to dive back in!

Flamebringer by Elle Katharine White. This is the third book in White’s Heartstone series, which started out as a Pride and Prejudice retelling, but it’s evolved into much more. Can’t wait!

Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff really needs no introduction. This is the third and final book in his Nevernight Chronicles, which has been a wild ride!

The Girl with No Face by M.H. Boroson. Book two in Boroson’s hugely underrated Daoshi Chronicles series, I’m beyond excited to see what the author has done in this follow up to the brilliant The Girl with Ghost Eyes. If you haven’t read the first book and you love fantasy, you really should check it out.

Big thanks to Harper Voyager, Thomas Dunne Books and Talos!

These next two books are two of my MOST anticipated reads this year. Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir has already been getting stellar reviews, and I can’t wait to read it a little closer to its September release date.

The Dead Girls Club by Damien Angelica Walters is also a book I’m ridiculously excited about! Damien is such a strong writer and her books are always very good.

This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone sounds complex and completely “my” type of story. I’m also happy to see Saga Press back on NetGalley, and this is the first of two of their titles in my haul this week.

A Lush and Seething Hell by John Hornor Jacobs is a bind-up of two novellas, the previously published The Sea Dreams It Is the Sky and My Heart Struck Sorrow. These both sound amazing, and I’m really excited to dig in!

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher is described as “The Blair Witch Project meets the Andy Griffith Show.” That alone is making me curious, and the fact that Kingfisher is a pseudonym for Ursula Vernon seals the deal.

Last Ones Left Alive by Sarah Davis-Goff. This dystopian sounds really creepy and sooo good. I believe this was previously published in the UK, so I’m glad it’s now stateside.

Finally, I was offered a copy of The Warehouse by Rob Hart and I jumped at the chance to read it. It sounds crazy, and I believe it’s already been optioned for film by Ron Howard.

Huge thanks for all of these goes to Tor.com, Crooked Lane Books, Gallery/Saga Press, Harper Voyager, Flatiron Books, and Crown!

And that’s my latest haul! Are you planning to read (or have you already read) any of these books?

  1. It’s been a while since I read any Julie Czerneda, but I do like her scifi. A Thousand Words for Stranger is one of my all time favorites. I’ll be interest to see what you think of her new fantasy.

    • Tammy

I can’t wait, hopefully after I read this one I’ll want to go back and check out her backlist.

  2. So many awesome looking books in this haul! A couple I haven’t seen before but I’m super excited to check out (Titans and Life & Limb).

    • Tammy

Life and Limb sounds really different, which is good when there are so many books out there these days and sometimes they all blend together.

  3. I really wanted a copy of The Warehouse… but was denied! Ugh… I’ll have to read your thoughts and see if I want to take the plunge.

    • Tammy

I’m really excited to read A Lush and Seething Hell. I was sorry I missed one of the novellas last year when it came out by itself, but now I can catch up:-)

  4. As always lots of books I haven’t ever heard of but they look cool so I hope you enjoy them! We have one in common the Dead Girl Club so hope we both like that one! 🙂

  5. Reading Velocity Weapon this weekend! Way too early to have an opinion yet, but fingers crossed it’s good! I just picked up Polaris Rising on a Kindle Daily Deal, I’m trying to hold myself to actually reading it and seeing if I enjoy it before I request the sequel. I’ve got a little bit of time! I’ve got Gideon the Ninth from Edelweiss, I have no idea what to expect other than it’s bonkers. Awesome haul!

I’ll be reading Velocity Weapon very soon, and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts:-)

Right??? I love when publishers give us that little extra surprise. This book is so cool:-)

  6. My digital pile blew up this week as well, thanks a lot NG and Edel! Of course I also have audiobooks adding to the load, so it’s pretty bad, lol 😛 I was so excited to get the Tor.com package as well this week, and I got a surprise copy of Life and Limb which I probably wouldn’t have heard of if I hadn’t read about it on one of your recent WoW posts so thanks 😀

  7. Wow, this is one impressive haul! I can’t wait for your review for The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t With Her Mind. I was of course drawn to that one because of the title. And yay for the Kristoff book too. I still need to read the second book in the series but I actually just finally ordered a copy this week so I can get caught up before Darkdawn comes out.

I feel like I’ve been waiting for Darkdawn FOREVER. So glad it’s finally *almost* here:-)

  8. Darkdawn was the best finale to a series I have read in ages!!! You’re going to love it. Magic for Liars didn’t really get my attention until everyone started raving about how good it was. Guess I’m going to have to hunt down a copy now! And I’m super intrigued by Gossamer Mage. Enjoy!

    • Tammy

Ooh you’ve already read Darkdawn?? I’m so glad you loved it. I definitely have high hopes because it’s the finale:-)

  9. Ormeshadow sounds interesting. I’m excited to see some reviews about it.
Yessss to Gideon the Ninth. Who isn’t anticipating this book? haha.
Last Ones Left Alive sounds incredible.

As usual you kill me with your book hauls. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

    • Tammy

Yeah, Gideon the Ninth has had so much buzz, and I think it’s going to be one of those cases where it lives up to the hype, at least I hope so!

  10. So many great books here! I’ve been meaning to get to Magic for Liars, I keep somehow forgetting that I have a copy I meant to read and review when it was out… whoops. The Gossamer Mage is so gorgeous, I’m really intrigued! I’ve been really looking forward to Ormeshadow too, I hope you love it. Darkdawn is probably the one i’m most excited for, haha. Hope you have a fantastic time reading all of these. 🙂

Thanks Jordan! I just started Magic for Liars and it’s not quite what I was expecting, but I’m enjoying it so far:-)

    • Tammy

I just heard The Warehouse is going to be a movie, I think. Now I’m even more curious!

  11. I see about 5 or 6 books there I can’t wait to dive into. I’m especially looking forward to This is How You Lose the Time War the more I hear about it. Have fun with these! 🙂
