Over-Booked [102] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Big thanks to all the publishers for sending review copies my way! I have a mix this week of ARCs from publishers, a cool Instagram contest win, and a pre-order arrival. Here are the books that made their way to my mailbox/Kindle this week:

Physical review books:

Snakeskins by Tim Major. I’m excited to be on the blog tour for this book, thanks to Titan Books! My tour stop is next Friday, and I’ll have a review and a giveaway, so don’t miss it!

Rotherweird by Andrew Caldecott is a book I’ve seen around for a while now. I believe it’s already been released in the UK, and the press release I got for this edition has a June 2019 release date. I should probably check with the publisher to see what’s up! In any case, I’m curious to read this. Also, this GORGEOUS paperback has sprayed black edges, which you can’t see in this photo.

Growing Things by Paul Tremblay. Big thanks to William Morrow for an ARC of Tremblay’s upcoming short fiction collection! These stories sound really good, and I am anxious to see what Tremblay does with a shorter format. I’ll admit I wasn’t a big fan of Disappearance at Devil’s Rock, which is the only novel of his I’ve read, but I’m willing to give this collection a shot.

Unraveling by Karen Lord. This will be my first Karen Lord book, and it sounds like a really good speculative mystery. Big thanks to DAW Books for this lovely finished hardcover!

Empress of Forever by Max Gladstone. I couldn’t be more excited to have a copy of Gladstone’s upcoming novel that’s got the intriguing tagline of “A feminist Guardians of the Galaxy”! Huge thanks to Tor Books, I actually won this in an Instagram giveaway:-D

Cry Pilot by Joel Dane. I’m pretty sure I saw this book in an Ace Books catalog on Edelweiss, because it looks sooo familiar. But I was thrilled to get a surprise ARC in the mail, and it sounds really good, sort of a military SF story. Thanks Ace!

The Wolf’s Call by Anthony Ryan. This was a surprise arrival from Ace. I haven’t read Ryan’s first series, and I believe this is the start of a new series set in the same world. Does anyone know if I can dive into this without having read his other books?

Big thanks to DAW Books for sending this beautiful finished copy of Pariah by W. Michael Gear. I’m about to finish this third book in his Donovan Trilogy series and it’s a bunch of fun! Look for my review on Monday, and an interview with Mr. Gear on Tuesday:-D

Finally, I decided at the last minute to preorder a copy of Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff, simply so that I could get the exclusive novella, Memento, which is a short prequel to The Illuminae Files. Anyone else preorder so you could get Memento??

Digital review books:

Some exciting new NetGalley approvals this week! First up, The Passengers by John Marrs. I featured this near future thriller in a Future Fiction post, and I’m looking forward to diving in.

I was also just approved for The Toll by Cherie Priest, her latest horror story. I loved The Family Plot a couple of years ago, and this sounds great. Plus the cover has so much atmosphere!

Macmillan kindly sent me a widget invite for The Furies by Katie Lowe. This wasn’t really on my radar, but the more I look into it, the more I want to read it. It’s a thriller in the vein of The Secret History and The Craft, at least those are the vibes I’m getting.

And that’s my latest book haul! Let me know if you plan to read any of these:-D

Me too, the reviews on GR scare me a little, but hopefully we’ll both enjoy it:-)

Ha ha, well I do have piles of books, but I’ve been collecting them for over 30 years:-)

  1. I’m reading Pariah now also. Such a great series! Unraveling is on my TBR list (entered a giveaway – fingers crossed 🙂 ). And Aurora Rising is on my list to order for my library.

  2. The Furies wasn’t on my radar either until I think I read a review on Lynn’s blog, now I’m pretty curious about it as well! I also got a copy of the Karen Lord but it didn’t make it onto this week’s round up – I think you will enjoy her style. And I think I might be done with Tremblay, as his last two books were disappointments even though I loved A Head Full of Ghosts, though I might give him one more try with his next full length novel.

I’m hoping maybe I’m enjoy Tremblay’s short stories, we’ll see! I do still need to catch up with Head Full of Ghosts.

  3. I got The Toll as well and I’m thrilled. I think you and I are a few of the two people I know who actually read The Family Plot. It needs more attention! I want to read Aurora Rising as well.

  4. Great haul! I got a surprise copy of Wolf’s Call as well. I only read the first two books of the original trilogy and can this features the same main protagonist. I have been curious if I can skip over that last book I missed before reading this, though I am guessing probably not. If you get an answer for sure, let me know 🙂

  5. Ooh- I’m excited to see what you think of the Anthony Ryan One. I’ve been meaning to try him for awhile.

Yeah, me too. I’m hoping I can read this as a stand alone without having read the first series.

      • You’ll probably be fine. At worst it might contain some spoilers for other books? But I don’t know if they are even set in the same worlds.
