Future Fiction #19: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three new cover reveals popped up on Twitter and Instagram last week, and I’m excited to read all three!

“That girl’s got more wrong notions than a barn owl’s got mean looks.”

Esther is a stowaway. She’s hidden herself away in the Librarian’s book wagon in an attempt to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her—a marriage to the man who was previously engaged to her best friend. Her best friend who she was in love with. Her best friend who was just executed for possession of resistance propaganda. The future American Southwest is full of bandits, fascists, and queer librarian spies on horseback trying to do the right thing.

Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey. Releases in February 2020 from Tor.com Publishing. Sarah Gailey seems to be everywhere these days. Not only was this incredible cover revealed last week, but they also have another book coming out from Tor next month (Magic for Liars) AND another book coming out next year from Simon Pulse (When We Were Magic). Oh my gosh this sounds like so much fun! I’m here for the weird westerns. Bring them all to me:-D

Shannon Price’s A Thousand Fires is a breakout contemporary debut―think The Outsiders meets The Iliad―that’s perfect for fans of Courtney Summers and Veronica Roth.

10 Years. 3 Gangs. 1 Girl’s Epic Quest…

An extraordinary debut set in an alternate San Francisco and inspired by The Iliad…

Valerie Simons knows the gangs are dangerous—her little brother was shot and killed by the Boars two years ago.

Still, nothing will sway Valerie from wanting to join the elite and beautiful Herons and find her brother’s killer. It doesn’t hurt that her best friend Matthew is slated to become a Heron leader—and she’d follow him to the ends of the earth.

Then Valerie is recruited by the mysterious Stags when their volatile, provocative, and beyond charismatic leader Jax promises to help her get revenge. Torn between old love and new loyalty, Valerie races to finish the mission that got her into the gangs.

But no one truly wins the Wars.

A Thousand Fires by Shannon Price. Releases in November 2019 from Tor Teen.  After reading that blurb, how can you not want to read this book? The publisher is calling it “contemporary,” but the “alternate San Francisco” description is enough of a speculative element to get me excited. And seriously, that cover.

Into the Crooked Place begins a gritty two-book YA fantasy series from Alexandra Christo, the author of To Kill a Kingdom.

The streets of Creije are for the deadly and the dreamers, and four crooks in particular know just how much magic they need up their sleeve to survive.

Tavia, a busker ready to pack up her dark-magic wares and turn her back on Creije for good. She’ll do anything to put her crimes behind her.

Wesley, the closest thing Creije has to a gangster. After growing up on streets hungry enough to swallow the weak whole, he won’t stop until he has brought the entire realm to kneel before him.

Karam, a warrior who spends her days watching over the city’s worst criminals and her nights in the fighting rings, making a deadly name for herself.

And Saxony, a resistance fighter hiding from the very people who destroyed her family, and willing to do whatever it takes to get her revenge.

Everything in their lives is going to plan, until Tavia makes a crucial mistake: she delivers a vial of dark magic—a weapon she didn’t know she had—to someone she cares about, sparking the greatest conflict in decades. Now these four magical outsiders must come together to save their home and the world, before it’s too late. But with enemies at all sides, they can trust nobody. Least of all each other.

Into the Crooked Place (Into the Crooked Place #1) by Alexandra Christo. Releases in October 2019 from Feiwel and Friends. Christo is also the author of last year’s To Kill a Kingdom, a book I regret not reading, because I’ve read so many rave reviews. I’m definitely adding this to my list, though. Four crooks have to come together to save the world? Yes please:-D

So much yes to this! I need more wild west in my life. A Thousand Fires looks interesting.. I’m wondering what’s alternate about San Francisco? Just that’s overrun by gangs?

I don’t know, but any time I hear “alternate” I’m interested in finding out exactly that: what is “alternate” about it?

It does sound fun, and having read another story of Gailey’s that had a western feel, I think this will be great:-)

I know so many people who loved To Kill a Kingdom, and I want to read it as well:-)

  2. Wow, Sarah Gailey is on fire! Upright Women Wanted sounds super fun. I’m also totally here for A Thousand Fires and Into the Crooked Places. These all sound so good!
