Back for its second year, Wyrd and Wonder is a month long celebration of all things fantasy, and I’m excited to be participating for the first time. Our hosts are imyril, Lisa and Jorie, and you can find out more about the event by clicking this link. Basically, the idea is to focus on fantasy books, movies, TV, gaming or whatever you love! I have a HUGE May TBR and I won’t be able to read only fantasy, but I will list the fantasy books I hope to read, as well as some other fantasy focused posts.
The Books:
I’d like to catch up on some late review books, so I’m adding Never-Contented Things, The Near Witch, and The Binding to my list. I can’t guarantee I’ll read all of them, but at least I have a great pile to choose from!
I just finished another overdue review book, The Witch’s Kind by Louisa Morgan, and LOVED it! Look for my review on Thursday. And I might be reading Middlegame by Seanan McGuire when this post goes up. I’d also like to go back and read Jade City by Fonda Lee, which came out a couple of years ago. I feel terrible that Orbit sent me a copy and I never got around to reading it. It’s supposed to be spectacular, and the second book in the series is coming out and I want to make sure I’m ready.
Lists, Future Fiction & The Friday Face-Off
During Wyrd and Wonder, expect at least two Future Fiction posts to focus solely on upcoming fantasy releases I’m excited for. And Lynn at Books and Travelling with Lynn has given us fantasy-themed Friday Face-Offs each Friday in May! If you’ve ever wanted to jump in and join us, here are the themes:
May 3: A cover that is predominantly Blue
May 10: A cover featuring a festival/party/celebration
May 17: A cover featuring a fantasy beast
May 24: A cover that features “magical things.”
May 31: A favorite fantasy cover
I’m also planning a couple of Top Ten Fantasy lists, although as I write this I don’t have the particulars worked out. Never fear, I promise to come up with something fantasy related:-D
Giveaway! and Instagram/photo challenge
And you can’t have a fantasy-themed month without a giveaway, so look for more details near the end of the month. My plan right now is “winner’s choice” of any fantasy book I’ve talked about during Wyrd and Wonder, and don’t worry, this giveaway will be international!
There’s also a cool daily photo/blog post challenge, and if time permits I’d love to try my hand at posting each day on Instagram. If you love sharing photos or simply turning a bunch of prompts into something creative, check out the list here.
I wanted to join in but April was so crazy that I’m way behind on reviews and I still need to read a few books that I received for review and only one of them is a fantasy book… I’ll be looking forward to your Wyrd and Wonder posts anyway! 😀

I totally know where you’re coming from, I still have quite a few April books to get to myself:-)
Hallo, Hallo Maryam,
I definitely understand this as well – as one of the co-hosts for #WyrdAndWonder, I wanted to put your mind at ease – join us in any capacity you feel comfy with this May. You don’t have to run posts/social or blog if you don’t have the time but if you wanted to visit with us or share on your social channels that is perfectly okay too! Just do what is right for you this month and we’ll hope to see you in our 3rd year next May.
I hadn’t realized this was a thing- but it looks like so much fun! I’ll definitely have to put up a few dedicated fantasy posts. Thanks for sharing!
It’s very casual so join in however you like. This is my first time doing this, and I think it will be fun to discover new SFF blogs as well.
Hallo, hallo Tammy!
This is the best part of the event we’ve co-created – it is a relaxing spin on celebrating Fantasy & the reasons why we all love the genre – in whichever way the genre arrives in our lives (books, yes, but also film, music, tv, etc) — I’m glad to see you’ve joined us and welcome to your first Wyrd And Wonder! I agree – it is wicked brill we get to find each other and hopefully make new bookish friends throughout the event! 🙂
I’m planning on joining in, although I’m not sure quite how. Game of Thrones will continue to eat up a lot of blog bandwidth. But I also have several reviews of fantasy books that I need to get written and published. And hopefully this month I will have time for a few other things like face-off Friday.

I think your GOT recaps will be perfect for this event!
I totally agree! Being one of the co-hosts, I can attest GOT is going to be making an appearance on more than one person’s feeds for #WyrdAndWonder! I’m not into the series myself but I know it has a strong pull for participants and I bet they’d love to see your contributions, too! Anyway you want to join us, rocks. Just be sure to tag us if your on Twitter (#WyrdAndWonder) so we can find you and add your post(s) to the master archive if you’re not adding them directly yourself. Welcome to the Quest!

This sounds so fun and inspiring, Tammy! I’m looking forward to following along with your May and can’t wait to see the photos, etc. Enjoy!
I do love blogging events like this, and I always end up finding new blogs to visit, which is pretty awesome:-)
I’m not participating but I am looking forward to following everyone who is. Looks like you got some good books to read. I need to get to Never Contented Things as Well. I have too may library books out though. And for some reason, I’m craving something light so I may work a chick lit book in somewhere. I don’t do it regularly but I guess it’s my “mind” telling me it needs something different. I’ve been having horrible nightmares all week and that’s a sure sign I’m almost at my limit so gotta listen huh?
Oh no, sorry to hear about your nightmares:-( Definitely read something lighter to help with that.
Fun challenge! And it looks like you have a great batch of books coming up. Looking forward to your reviews!
There are always plenty of fantasy books being released so I’m glad I have plenty to choose from:-)
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts about Jade City! It’s one of my favorites and I blab about it endlessly.
I do remember how much you loved Jade City, and just about every review I’ve read has been similar. I can’t wait!
Oooh this looks awesome! I can’t wait to see all your fantasy posts <3 and I am super excited for the fantasy themed Friday Fave Offs 😀

Me too, at least I feel like all the themes can be twisted towards fantasy, even though a few are a little vague.
My! What a busy May schedule! 🙂
This time I managed to sign on but made no plans: we’ll see how it goes…
One thing is certain: there will be fun!!!!

Yes, it’s always fun to join the community in an event like this, no matter how involved you are:-)
Hallo, Hallo Maddalena,
Glad to have you aboard #WyrdAndWonder!! 🙂 The beauty is how each of us are doing something different which works for each of us this month! The freedom to just be chill and causal about the event is a luxury I almost wished I had had this year – but I wanted to dig into a hearty girth of Fantasy novels/series so I’m a bit more scheduled than I am spontaneous but I have some flexibility about which story I’ll be reading and when… still – glad to have you with us and Iook forward to seeing what your going to be sharing!
Wyrd and Wonder!! Fun seeing a couple different people reading Jade City, I think that’s going to be my first backlist read after I get through my ARC of An Illusion of Thieves. Yay for fantasy!

I think everyone is realizing that the sequel to Jade City is coming up soon and now they want to catch up!
Pretty awesome! I sure will look out for your review of the Witch’s Kind.
My plan was to do some prep work before this event kicks off, but my April got a bit busy in the middle to end.
I’m hoping to get my review of The Witch’s Kind up by Saturday at the latest, it was soooo good!
Darn it, I wanted to join in on this but I guess I didn’t plan too well. Oh well, there’s always next year. In the meantime, good luck! 😀
You can still join! Believe me, my month isn’t going to be all fantasy, but I do have a fair number of fantasy review books that I’ll count as being part of Wyrd and Wonder:-)
Hallo, Hallo Mogsy,
Definitely – if you want to join us still – DO! 🙂 There is no time limit on when you jump into the event and if you feel our 3rd year is a better fit for you, than we’ll see you in 2020! 🙂 We’re quite chill – you can even join us straight-up til the last week/hours of the event! lol Best of all, just have a fun May even if you just want to browse through the posts or the feeds on Twitter where we’re helping to route everyone to go! 🙂
Yeay time to start all things fantastic~ I am curious to hear your thoughts on Jade City. I don’t see that many people reading it.
Annemieke recently posted…It Is Time for #WyrdandWonder Year Two
I agree, I think Jade City is an underrated book and I can’t wait to get to it. Not sure I’ll be able to find the time this month, but I’m hoping:-)
I’m also joining in with this – although I haven’t worked everything out quite yet – it’ll be a seat of the pants affair I think.
Lynn 😀
I sort of have a plan but really I’m just going to figure it out as I go along. I think that’s the best way!
YAY! So glad you are also taking part of this! I’m excited to read Jade City. I might read it for this month if I can get to it.

Moddlegame is one of my next reads! Good luck and happy reading!
I need to get to Never Contented Things too before it gets lost in the pile of overdue ARCs. 😀 And YEEESSS Jade City. It was one of my top reads of last year–I hope you love it!!
This looks like a fun event. Perhaps I might consider joining in since I’m already all things Fantasy lol! Hope you have a good time with this!
Really glad you decided to join us, Lisa! 🙂

Nice book choices! Not read all of them but got some on my tbr as well. I enjoyed The Binding but it wasn’t quite as ‘fantasy’ as I’d have liked.
I want to read Jade City and Near Ghost from your list. This is going to be such a fun event! Looking forward to all your posts this month.
Hallo, Hallo Tammy,
I wanted to welcome you to #WyrdAndWonder!! Somehow I didn’t get the proper chance to drop-in on your before my migraine took over this past weekend! I’m making up the time I lost tonight whilst getting ready to release my first reviews for the event, too! 🙂 It is lovely seeing everyone who may have known about us last year join us but also, for newcomers who are just finding us to join us this year! Makes the event feel like we’re gaining traction and helping to unite everyone who loves celebrating the fantastical they’re embracing into their lives!!
In regards to McGuire, I’m attempting to get my tail current on the RAL I’m meant to be co-hosting but fell behind on in January — the #ADayeAMonth RAL? I’m hoping to release my thoughts on Rosemary and Rue later this week whilst digging into the second next week — hoping to make it to book 5 before 1st of June but even if I get to book 3 or 4, I’ll take it as a win!
Loving how you’ve planned out your month and am looking forward to repeat visits with you this month! Have a great Wyrd And Wonder!
PS: I hadn’t meant to share the Nellie Bly post — oy. That snuck past me! 🙁
