Future Fiction #17: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

No theme this week, just three cool sounding books to share with you!

A WOMAN ON THE RUN. A CAPTAIN ADRIFT IN SPACE. ONE OF THEM IS INFECTED WITH AN ALIEN PARASITE.

In this dark science fiction thriller, a young woman must confront her past so the human race will have a future.

Rosalyn Devar is on the run from her famous family, the bioengineering job she’s come to hate, and her messed-up life. She’s run all the way to outer space, where she’s taken a position as a “space janitor,” cleaning up ill-fated research expeditions. But no matter how far she goes, Rosalyn can’t escape herself. After too many mistakes on the job, she’s given one last chance: take care of salvaging the Brigantine, a research vessel that has gone dark, with all crew aboard thought dead.

But the Brigantine’s crew are very much alive–if not entirely human. Now Rosalyn is trapped on board, alone with a crew infected by a mysterious parasitic alien. The captain, Edison Aries, seems to still maintain some control over himself and the crew, but he won’t be able to keep fighting much longer. Rosalyn and Edison must find a way to stop the parasite’s onslaught…or it may take over the entire human race.

Salvaged by Madeleine Roux. Releases in October 2019 from Ace Books. Two words that drag me in every time are “dark” and “science fiction,” so I’m very excited to check this out. This has so many elements I love: characters trapped in space, parasitic infection, aliens—what more do you want? 😉

You’re riding in your self-driving car when suddenly the doors lock, the route changes and you have lost all control. Then, a mysterious voice tells you, “You are going to die.”

Just as self-driving cars become the trusted, safer norm, eight people find themselves in this terrifying situation, including a faded TV star, a pregnant young woman, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal immigrant, a husband and wife, and a suicidal man.

From cameras hidden in their cars, their panic is broadcast to millions of people around the world. But the public will show their true colors when they are asked, “Which of these people should we save?…And who should we kill first?”

The Passengers by John Marrs. Releases in August 2019 from Berkley Books. This sounds like an excellent near future thriller! I’ve never read anything by Marrs before, but he’s written quite a few books. I love the cover too:-D

Meri Beckley lives in a world without lies. When she turns on the news, she hears only the facts. When she swipes the pages of her online textbooks, she reads only the truth. When she looks at the peaceful Chicago streets, she feels the pride everyone in the country feels about the era of unprecedented hope and prosperity over which the government presides.

But when Meri’s mother is killed, Meri suddenly has questions that no one else seems to be asking. And when she tries to uncover her mother’s state of mind in her last weeks, she finds herself drawn into a secret world full of facts she’s never heard and a history she didn’t know existed.

Suddenly, Meri is faced with a choice between accepting the “truth” she has been taught or embracing a world the government doesn’t want anyone to see—a world where words have the power to change the course of a country, and the wrong word can get Meri killed.

Verify (Verify #1) by Joelle Charbonneau. Releases in September 2019 from HarperTeen. Charbonneau wrote a series called The Testing which is supposed to be really good, so even though I missed it when it came out, I’m definitely putting this on my list.

  1. I’m pretty sure I already have Passengers on my wishlist and I could use some alien parasite distraction and I’ve read at least one other book by Roux so I’ll be grabbing it eventually as well. I’m also curious about a book featuring peaceful Chicago streets. That in itself has me curious.

Thanks Sarah! Passengers just grabbed me with both the cover and the blurb, I couldn’t pass it up:-)

  2. You have definitely got me excited with this post! I really liked The Testing, and another book by Charbonneau, so I’ll have to read this one as well. It seems to fit the times perfectly. I also have enjoyed Madeleine Roux in the past, so interested in that book as well. Thanks for sharing!

I’m glad you’ve enjoyed Madeleine Roux, I’ve seen her books all over the place but I’ve never read any of them.

I think it’s a good sign that you think Passengers feels like a series, hopefully that will make it a fast paced and cinematic read:-)

It’s not my normal genre but honestly it does have a SF vibe to it so I think it’s going to work:-)

I may need to go back to Edelweiss and get Passengers, I remember thinking I didn’t need any more ARCs but it’s very tempting:-)

Roux has written quite a few YA books, but for some reason I’ve never read her before. I think this is adult, though.

  3. WHOA, I am LOVING the sound of Salvaged and that cover?!! It sounds like the kind of book I would really enjoy reading. I’ve yet to read any of Madeline Roux’s horror books, but I did read a sci-fi short story she wrote in the Star Wars anthology that came out in 2017 and it was my favourite of the entire anthology so I have high hopes for Salvaged.

  4. Oh my, that self driving car book has me very interested. It kind of also made me think at the same time – won’t people miss driving when these cars eventually become a reality – like it says you’ll be riding in the car not driving it. Anyway, I digress, it just popped into my head. I do like the sound of this one very much.
    Lynn 😀

  5. Science Fiction isn’t my go-to genre, but I have enjoyed a few in the past! I have to really be in the mood for them. I recently tried Glow (it might be named Potency now), and just could not get into it. It had more to do with the annoying main character than the actual story, but even it was a tad too unbelievable. I want sci-fi and fantasy books to make me believe in things that I never thought possible.

I do love the cover for the first book! Gorgeous!
