Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
Not by design, but coincidentally all my picks this week start with the letter “F”! Here we go:
Monsters, manners, and magic combine in this exciting final volume in the Heartstone Trilogy—an exhilarating blend of epic fantasy and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice—in which a fearless healer and her dragon-riding husband must stop a reawakened evil from destroying their world.
It starts with the inconceivable: Wydrick, sworn enemy of the Daireds, is back from the dead, possessed by a ghast that grants him immortality and inhuman strength. From the isolated northern mountains, Aliza, Alastair, and Akarra chase him into the dangerous Old Wilds, realizing too late that he’s led them into a blizzard. Before he vanishes, Wydrick utters a warning: A terrible, ancient evil has awoken, hungry for blood, and is headed their way.
The danger is closer than they know. The Tekari—sworn enemies of humans—are openly roaming the kingdom and are headed towards the capital, Edonarle. Then unexpected news arrives: riding like a dark dragon on the winds from the south, an ambassador from the Silent King of Els, has left the shores of the distant desert kingdom for the first time in centuries.
Unknown enemy? Or unexpected ally? Plunged into a dangerous world of royal intrigue and ancient grudges, Aliza and Alastair soon realize it will take more than steel and dragonfire to save their kingdom. For the silence of Els hides a secret that could shake House Daired to its foundations, and the time has come to settle accounts.
Silence, it seems, is about to be broken
Flamebringer (Heartstone #3) by Elle Katharine White. Releases in September 2019 from Harper Voyager. If you aren’t familiar with this series, it’s a fantasy retelling of Pride and Prejudice, with dragons! I’m very excited to read the final installment. And that cover!! If only September were already here…
A rebellious young woman leads a family of smugglers who become unwittingly entangled in a galactic war in this first book of an action-packed space opera trilogy.
There’s only one thing Scorpia Kaiser wants in the whole galaxy: to finally own Fortuna, the ship she pilots and the only home she’s ever known. But when it becomes clear her predecessor – the family matriarch – has been secretly dealing with various planetary governments, Scorpia realizes that her own family may be the reason the system’s five planets are headed toward a devastating war.
Lies, manipulation, and profit are all she’s ever been taught, but as she ascends into her new position Scorpia finds she has the chance to change everything. Yet even as she takes on more responsibility for the family’s fate, fortune and influence, she is not at all sure she’s ready for it – nor that she has the support of her crew, particularly her brother and rival Corvus.
To stop the war, she’ll have to unite her family and unravel the chaos they’ve left in their wake.
Fortuna (The Nova Vita Protocol #1) by Kristyn Merbeth. Releases in Fall 2019 from Orbit. This is the first book in a new space opera series by Merbeth, author of the Wastelander series (which I have not read yet, unfortunately!) and it sounds like a bunch of fun!
A dark thriller from Annalee Newitz, the founding editor of io9, about the lengths we’ll go to protect the ones we love. In a modern-day United States that’s just a step away from our own, time travel is possible. But a secret war is brewing over access to history.
Tess is a geologist desperately trying to change the past.
Beth is a teenage riot grrl who has witnessed a murder that will forever shape her future.
Across the timeline, a group of men are trying to destroy time travel. If they succeed, only a small elite will have the power to shape the past, present, and future.
A final confrontation is coming. Our only hope lies with an unlikely group of allies, their lives separated by centuries, battling for a world where anyone can change the future.
The Future of Another Timeline by Annalee Newitz. Releases in September 2019 from Tor Books. This description is pretty vague, but that could be a good thing. I do love time travel stories and this sounds fantastic! Plus, that cover, wow. I LOVE it.
Yassssss, new Annalee Newitz!
I need to read her first book, but I might start with this one:-)
I’ve made sure The Future of Another Timeline is on my tbr. 🙂
Isn’t that cover striking?
ooh, Fortuna looks good! *clicks add*
Ha ha, happy to add to your TBR;-)
I really liked the cover of “Heart Stone”. Since it’s a retelling of “Pride and Prejudice”, I definitely wanna check it out. 🙂

That series is so good, I recommend it!
I’ll need to get the third book in that series as I have the other two. Maybe I should start them sometime soon huh?
Hey, if you wait you can do a binge read;-)
The Future of Another Timeline sounds amazing (although I should probably read the book by this author that I already own before chasing after a new one). I really like the sound of Fortuna as well! Getting a bit of a Firefly vibe…
Yes, Firefly! Now that you mention it, I can see the comparison:-)
The cover for Fortuna is so eye-catching! The time travel one sounds like it could be interesting.

I can’t remember where I saw the cover, maybe on a cover reveal or something? But yep, it fits so wonderfully with the other books, can’t wait!
Good picks! I find I am especially drawn to the one about time travel. Hope you get to enjoy them all! Thanks for sharing
Time travel can be hit or miss for me, but I’m always tempted to try these books:-)
I’m most curious about Fortuna, it sounds like it has a lot of potential. And it’s always fun reading an author that’s new to me. Added it to my goodreads list.
It does sound like it’s got a good premise, I’m excited to find out:-)
Fortuna is one I’m especially interested in. I’ve never heard of The Future of Another Timeline, but wow that sounds fascinating! This fall is already looking like it’s going to be a good one. 🙂

Thanks for visiting, Lisa:-)
These all sounds so good, especially Fortuna! I love that the ring of smugglers is led by a young woman.

I think that’s one of the elements that caught my attention, a female-led band of smugglers!
Fortuna is calling to me, as is the Pride and Prejudice retelling! Wonderful shares, Tammy!
The Heartstone books are such a treat:-)
I saw the third Heartstone book on Edelweiss the other day, so excited! And Fortuna is new to me, but looks intriguing and the name Merbeth immediately rang a bell. So happy to see she indeed the K.S. Merbeth of Bite and Raid. I need to read this now!
I need to catch up with Bite and Raid, but I do love seeing authors switch genres:-)
Looks like a lot of us have set our sights on Fortuna. All of these sound good though.

Me too, it’s so hard to resist dragons, right?
I thought that my TBR was going to survive this week’s post unscathed, but joke’s on me. Fortuna needs to be read by these eyeballs, so thanks for putting it on my radar!
