Future Fiction #5 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Fiction

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

No theme today, just three cover reveals I discovered that all sound AMAZING. Although, now that I’m putting this post together, there is a lot of ethnic diversity this week! Take a look:

Who was Molly Southbourne? What did she leave behind?

A burnt-out basement. A name stained in blood. Bodies that remember murder, one of them left alive. A set of rules that no longer apply.

Molly Southbourne is alive. If she wants to survive, she’ll need to run, hide, and be ready to fight. There are people who remember her, who know what she is and what she’s done. Some want her alive, some want her dead, and all hold a piece to the puzzles in her head. Can Molly escape them, or will she confront the bloody history that made her?

The Survival of Molly Southbourne (Molly Southbourne #2) by Tade Thompson. Releases in July 2019 from Tor.com. I knew there was a sequel coming, but I sort of forgot about it, until I saw the cover on Goodreads. I really loved the first novella in the series, The Murders of Molly Southbourne, an odd and violent story about a very unusual girl (you can check out my review here if you’re curious), and I’m looking forward to Thompson’s follow-up.

Simmering in Patagonian myth, The Tenth Girl is a gothic psychological thriller with a haunting twist.

At the very southern tip of South America looms an isolated finishing school. Legend has it that the land will curse those who settle there. But for Mavi—a bold Buenos Aires native fleeing the military regime that took her mother—it offers an escape to a new life as a young teacher to Argentina’s elite girls.

Mavi tries to embrace the strangeness of the imposing house—despite warnings not to roam at night, threats from an enigmatic young man, and rumors of mysterious Others. But one of Mavi’s ten students is missing, and when students and teachers alike begin to behave as if possessed, the forces haunting this unholy cliff will no longer be ignored.

One of these spirits holds a secret that could unravel Mavi’s existence. In order to survive she must solve a cosmic mystery—and then fight for her life.

The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring. Releases in September 2019 from Imprint. First of all, can we all please admire this atmospheric and mysterious cover? This story is set in Argentina, which is not a setting you find very often in genre fiction. That alone is a great reason to add this to your lists!

Seven days. Seven days. The Earth might end in seven days.

When news stations start reporting that Earth has been contacted by a planet named Alma, the world is abuzz with rumors that the alien entity is giving mankind only few days to live before they hit the kill switch on civilization.

For high school truant Jesse Hewitt, though, nothing has ever felt permanent. Not the guys he hooks up with. Not the jobs his underpaid mom works so hard to hold down. Life has dealt him one bad blow after another — so what does it matter if it all ends now? Cate Collins, on the other hand, is desperate to use this time to find the father she’s never met, the man she grew up hearing wild stories about, most of which she didn’t believe. And then there’s Adeem Khan. While coding and computer programming have always come easily to him, forgiveness doesn’t. He can’t seem to forgive his sister for leaving, even though it’s his last chance.

With only seven days to face their truths and right their wrongs, Jesse, Cate, and Adeem’s paths collide even as their worlds are pulled apart.

I Hope You Get This Message by Farah Naz Rishi. Releases in October 2019 from HarperTeen. Now, I know you’re wondering, “Tammy, why is one of your choices this week contemporary YA?” And although technically there is a science fiction element to the story—an alien invasion—this very much gives me a contemporary vibe. I’ve read these sort of “end of the world, what will you do during your last days” stories before, but I love the unique sound of this one. I also LOVE this graphic novel-like cover!

What do you think of this week’s Future Fiction picks? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I also completely forgot about The Survival of Molly Southborne! :O I’ll have to pre-order this one, I really liked the first novella though I never got around to reviewing it.

  2. I’m pretty sure I added The Tenth Girl to my Goodreads wishlist already but it has been a fairly recent discovery. I never read the Molly book but now that there is a sequel coming, I might just pick up the novella for a quick read.

  3. Wow, the TENTH GIRL seems like exactly the sort of book I love reading. I love that moody gothic vibe. You are always full of such great suggestions! I’ll keep my eye out for this.

The cover is one of my favorites, I just love the graphic novel look, even though it’s not actually a graphic novel:-)
