Future Fiction #3 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Fiction – The FEMALE HORROR EDITION!

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

This week, I have three horrific/speculative tales for you, all written by women:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Sky in the Deep in this bewitching, historical horror novel, perfect for fans of Holly Black and V.E. Schwab.

Seventeen-year-old Aderyn (“Ryn”) only cares about two things: her family, and her family’s graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don’t always stay dead.

The risen corpses are known as “bone houses,” and legend says that they’re the result of a decades-old curse. When Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker with a mysterious past, arrives in town, the bone houses attack with new ferocity. What is it about Ellis that draws them near? And more importantly, how can they be stopped for good?

Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a journey that will take them deep into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both the curse and the long-hidden truths about themselves. Equal parts classic horror novel and original fairy-tale, The Bone Houses will have you spellbound from the very first page.

The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones. Releases in September 2019 from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Isn’t this cover STUNNING?? The cover was just revealed last week on thenovl.com but I actually found it while searching around Goodreads. I’ve never read Emily’s books before, but she’s written quite a few. In any case, this sounds really good.

Gideon the Ninth is the most fun you’ll ever have with a skeleton.

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

Gideon the Ninth (The Ninth House #1) by Tamsyn Muir. Releases in September 2019 from Tor.com. Another recent cover reveal over at Tor.com, this sounds like an absolute blast! I believe this is Muir’s debut novel, but it looks like she has plenty of short stories published in various anthologies.

The Blair Witch Project meets Imaginary Girls in this story of codependent sisterhood, the struggle to claim one’s own space, and the power of secrets

Sixteen-year-old Skye is done playing the knight in shining armor for her insufferable younger sister, Deirdre. Moving across the country seems like the perfect chance to start over.

In their isolated new neighborhood, Skye manages to fit in, but Deirdre withdraws from everyone, becoming fixated on the swampy woods behind their house and building monstrous sculptures out of sticks and bones.

Then Deirdre disappears.

And when something awful comes scratching at Skye’s window in the middle of the night, claiming she’s the only one who can save Deirdre, Skye knows she will stop at nothing to bring her sister home.

Here There Are Monsters by Amelinda Bérubé. Releases in August 2019 from Sourcebooks Fire. OK, it seems I have a “bone” theme going on this week! Ha ha. I guess I’m in the mood for creepy! This sounds like it will fit the bill, I can’t resist stories set in isolated locations, especially when those settings involve woods or forests.

And there you have my three Future Fiction picks for this week! What do you think?

  1. As soon as I saw Female Horror, I knew I was sunk. The good thing is two were already on my wishlist so I just had to add Gideon the Ninth. How great does it sound and that cover! You know, if it wasn’t for the fact that I really like reading lots of different genres, I could honestly probably read horror all the time. GREAT PICKS!

  2. They all sound like horror thrillers or something. I love the covers and I am definitely going to try some of them. Thanks for sharing!

  3. The covers are absolutely fabulous – but I’m too much of a wuss to tackle this darker stuff, but I hope you really love them – they do look awesome…

  4. Could they have dropped any more big names for the blurb of The Bone Houses? Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Sky in the Deep? Holly Black? V.E. Schwab? I like all of those so I guess I’ll be checking this book out 😀
