Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Books I Can’t Wait to Read this Winter

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog!

It’s time to share our winter TBRs! For my list, I’ve selected books that are being released during the winter months of December, January and February. There are way more than ten that I’m excited about, but these are the books at the top of my winter TBR. Books are listed in order of release date, and you can click on the links to visit Goodreads:

First up, a couple of “King” books:-D

King of the Road by R.S. Belcher. Release date: 12/4/18. I may be reading this already when this post goes live, and if not, I’ll be starting it very soon. This is the second in Belcher’s Brotherhood of the Wheel series, an urban fantasy that revolves around a secret society that protects travelers from monsters and other supernatural creatures. They cruise America’s highways in big rig trucks, which makes this series not only unique, but completely entertaining.

The Wicked King by Holly Black. Release date: 1/8/19. I’m happy that I have a copy of this, the second in Black’s The Folk of the Air series. Seems to be theme going here, second books in series. Let’s see how many other books on my list fit that theme!

The Fall by Tracy Townsend. Release date: 1/15/19. Yep, you guessed it. This is book #2 in Townsend’s AMAZING Thieves of Fate series. I have a copy and it’s on my plate to read this month if I have time.

The Gutter Prayer by Gareth Hanrahan. Release date: 1/17/19. Reviews seem to be almost exclusively positive for this debut, and I hope to start it soon.

The Hanged Man by K.D. Edwards. Release date: 1/22/19. I’m not sure if this book is on schedule to be published in January or not, since I requested an ARC but haven’t seen any evidence on social media that ARCs are actually out and about in the world. But I’m really looking forward to reading ANOTHER book two, in Edwards fantastic The Tarot Sequence.

The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons. Release date: 2/5/19. This is a debut that’s getting all kinds of great buzz, and I’m curious to see for myself what all the fuss is about!

A Labyrinth of Scions and Sorcery by Curtis Craddock. Release date: 2/5/19. And the theme continues… this is another sequel! Book #2 of Craddock’s extremely entertaining The Risen Kingdoms series is a book I’ve been looking forward to since I finished An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors.

Murder Theory by Andrew Mayne. Release date: 2/5/19. Wait! I’m breaking my pattern and including a THIRD book in a series, lol. The Naturalist series is crazy and over-the-top, but the main character is so engaging that I forgive any extreme story elements. I’m not sure whether this book is on schedule either, because a) there’s no story description up on Goodreads yet, and b) I’ve been searching NetGalley for a copy but still nothing.

The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders. Release date: 2/12/19. It’s been several years since I read All the Birds in the Sky, and I’m looking forward to more of Anders’ strange and magical vibe.

Gates of Stone by Angus Macallan. Release date: 2/19/19. I believe this is Macallan’s debut, and it sounds like a great start to a new fantasy series.

So, the verdict? Half of my books are sequels! I swear I didn’t plan it that way. Are you excited about any of these books? What is your most anticipated winter read?

  1. Cool list! Hope you manage to read them during winter 🙂
And well done getting on with some series! I’ve neglected some really good ones, and not even sure why… really enjoyed the first book then i just dropped them. :/

I do pretty well with book twos, but I often fall off after that. Hopefully all of these are really good and will keep me reading the entire series:-)

  2. THE. WICKED. KING.

I honestly cannot stop shouting about that one. I’ve been wanting it since reading The Cruel Prince a year ago and I’m so happy I can finally.. almost.. stop waiting and start reading? [Pretty sure I’ll be faking illness the moment it arrives so I can read without being disturbed.. Or blame pregnancy. Something.. Just SOMETHING so I can read it immediately, hahaha.]

Ha ha I know what you mean! I couldn’t believe when I finished The Cruel Prince that it would be such a long wait for the next book.

I agree, you need to have standalones for those times when you just want to read something complete without waiting:-)

  3. I’m really excited for The City in the Middle of the Night! I really liked All the Birds in the Sky — she’s such a great writer. I’m not familiar with the other books on your list — will be interested to hear your thoughts as you read them!

  4. I thought I was somewhat close to remembering all the books I want to read this winter, but your list is reminding me of so many I’ve left out! The Wicked King, The Gutter Prayer, Gates of Stone are a few that I’m really looking forward to as well! The Hanged Man looks really intriguing. I hope you love all of these!

  5. OK, so… what books are coming out this winter? XD I’m still in a mental fog because of holiday preparations and being sick last week. But if I remember correctly, these are the upcoming new books I’m really looking forward to:

    – Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden
    – King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
    – The Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky

I swear there should be a second YA fantasy title in there somewhere… But I don’t remember what it is. *lol*

  6. I’m actually currently reading two of these right now, The Gutter Prayer and I just started King of the Road, so hoping both will turn out amazing. I am also excited to snag a listening copy of The Wicked King earlier today so that will probably be my next listen! I really need to get a jump on 2019 books – and oh my goodness, soooo excited for Murder Theory!

  7. I love the sound of the R.S. Belcher book – but I haven’t yet read the first book, so I need to get hold of it… And, like you, I loved All the Birds in the Sky, so I’m also excited about The City in the Middle of the Night.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what Charlie Jane Anders is going to write next. She’s so unique:-)

  8. Basically all of these books sound super good and I need to look into them some more. I.E., I need to read them because I’m super curious and I have this theory that curiosity will definitely kill this cat (me) if I don’t act on said curiosity. Kidding. Mostly. I’m babbling, sorry. The Gutter Prayer sounds REALLY brilliant. This is the first time I heard of it but I’m totally drawn into it based on title and synopsis alone. I hope you enjoy!

  9. I saw on the author’s twitter that The Hanged Man is being pushed back, I think maybe because of the whole Pyr being sold thing, or maybe it’s just the writing/editing taking longer than expected. I wonder if the new company is going to give ARCs because I’m really looking forward to that one too!

Wow, I don’t know how I missed that news about Pyr being sold! I should know these things, lol. I did just hear The Hanged Man will be out in September. I do need to start finding out how to request an ARC:-)
