What’s On My Plate – September 2018

Happy September, everyone! As you read this, I am in Boston getting my daughter moved into her dorm, and we’re spending our final moments together until she comes home at Christmastime. My son goes back to school in about three weeks, and then it’s going to be pretty quiet around here, which I’m both looking forward to and dreading at the same time.

Meanwhile, the beginning of the Fall publishing season is hitting us hard this year with SO MANY BOOKS! It seems like I barely made a dent in my August review pile, and now I’ve got all of these September releases coming as well. But I wouldn’t change it for anything, because as usual I’ve found the best books out there in the SFF genres to read;-)

Here’s what I have on my plate this month:

The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner. I’m thrilled that I have a review copy of this book on the way, I’ve been hearing good things about it!

Charmcaster (Spellslinger #3) by Sebastien de Castell. I actually might not get to this until next month, because I still need to catch up with Shadowblack, but I do have a review copy coming and I’m very excited!

We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix. I’ve really enjoyed all the Hendrix books I’ve read, and this one sounds like some good, rock ‘n roll fun!

Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven. I know Draven has written quite a few fantasy romance novels, but this will be my first time reading a book of hers. Also, I have a giveaway for Phoenix Unbound coming up in a few days, so stay tuned!

The Chrysalis by Brendan Deneen. I’m reading this right now (and actually might be finished by the time you read this), and so far it’s super creepy!

The Mouth of the Dark by Tim Waggoner. This is my first review book from the new horror publisher, Flame Tree Press. I’ve heard it’s really different, can’t wait!

Keeper of the Bees by Meg Kassel. This is technically a sequel to Kassel’s Black Birds of the Gallows, but I’m hoping it acts as a standalone, since I haven’t read the first book.

The Lantern’s Ember by Colleen Houck. The low reviews on Goodreads are killing me! I’m a little worried, but I’m in love with the cover, that’s got to mean something right??

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. This book has been out in the UK since last year and it’s finally being published in the US this month. I’ve read lots of rave reviews, so I’m excited!

Mecha Samurai Empire by Peter Tieryas. I have not read the first book in this series, United States of Japan, but I’ve been assured I can read this with no problems.

Did you miss any of my August reviews? Take a look:

Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett

Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames

Garrison Girl by Rachel Aaron

Vicious Rumer by Joshua Winning

#murdertrending by Gretchen McNeil

And that’s what’s on my plate this month. I’d love to hear what you’re planning on reading in September:-D

  1. The Sisters of the Winter Wood looks so good. Every time I see it mentioned somewhere I get excited for it. Hope you have a great September, Tammy!

His books are a lot of fun, not too serious, so I’d definitely read it when you don’t want anything too heavy.

  2. You have some cool looking books coming up. I just read Blackbird of the Gallows so I am curious about Keeper of the Bees, it seems more like a companion novel so I don’t know if you might need to know things from the first one or not. Hopefully it explains enough to make it a standalone read. 🙂

I’ve actually heard both: that you NEED to read Blackbird of the Gallows first, and that you DON’T have to read it. Since I don’t have a copy of BBofG, I’m just going to dive in and hope for the best:-)

  3. So many good books to look forward to. That Sisters book – well, I’ve wanted it since I saw the cover and read the blurb. So happy to have a copy of that one that I could dance a little jig.
The Waggoner book has a way creepy cover – I hummed and ahhed about it and really thought about requesting it but I know I’ve already passed my limit and I’m trying to be sensible. I still want it though. Doh.
    Happy reading.
    Lynn 😀

I’ve just started the Waggoner book and it’s really good so far. And pretty short, which I’m happy about:-)

  4. I see a few books on your list that I want to read at some point too. And The Sisters of the Winter Wood has such a beautiful cover, OMG.

In September I’ll be reading Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas, Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas and rereading Airman by Eoin Colfer. Not sure I’ll be able to read more since the first two are pretty long. 😛

You did pick some long books! I always get stressed out when I have 500+ page books because I know it will take so long to read them.

  5. The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton is so great! I hope you like it. Also, I hadn’t realized that it wasn’t out in the US. I guess I’m lucky that I picked it up when I was on a school trip to Ireland then. 🙂

    • Tammy

I heard about it from a few UK bloggers last year so I’ve been waiting quite a while. I hope to read it soon!

    • Tammy

I just finished The Chrysalis and it was pretty good! Yeah, enjoy these last years with your daughter at home, they go quickly:-(

  6. The 7 1/2 Deaths is one I want to get, it wasn’t on my radar initially but after a few reviews I want to read it now! The Lantern’s Ember- yeah that cover gets me. It would almost be worth having even if the book sucks lol. Which I’m sure it doesn’t- hopefully the reviews just mean it’s a but underrated?

Yeah, it’s hard to believe such a beautiful cover doesn’t have a wonderful book inside, although obviously that happens sometimes. But I would totally buy it just for the cover!

  7. Your September plans look a lot like my September plans in terms of reading. Where did this summer go? I am so behind on books and now fall will bring a whole slew of new releases 🙂 Good luck to your daughter and hope she has a great first year of college!

    • Tammy

Thanks! Yep, I’m behind as well and isn’t going to change any time soon. Oh well, I’m going for “mood reading” this month and I hope that will make me read more. It’s been a tough summer for reading, for some reason!

  8. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on 7 1/2 Deaths. I’ve been wanting to read that one. I enjoyed both the Grady Hendrix and the Tim Waggoner books. The Tim Waggoner book is WEIRD in a good way.

    • Tammy

I’m reading The Mouth of the Dark right now and it’s so well written, and so far I love it. Glad you enjoyed We Sold Our Souls, I’ve seen some mixed reviews so I’m a little worried.

    • Tammy

Thanks, let’s hope I can focus more this month, last month I just had too much on my mind and barely finished anything!

  9. As ever, you have snaffled some cracking books, Tammy – but the one that has me drooling with envy is Charmcaster – I’ve LOVED the previous two books in this series. Have a great reading month – and I hope your daughter has a really enjoyable time, it’s an amazing time. And a real change in the family dynamic…

    • Tammy

Thank you Sarah, it was tough leaving her 3,000 miles away, but she’s having fun so far:-) I hope you get a copy of Charmcaster soon:-)

Wow, seems like just a few days ago I was reading your August What’s On My Plate. Time keeps slipping by, as I’m sure you’re feeling more than I at the moment given your kids going off to school. I wish you well with all that! All the books are new to me this month, though I’m at least familiar with a couple of the authors. Looking forward to your reviews.
