Waiting on Wednesday [314] – HOW LONG ‘TIL BLACK FUTURE MONTH?: STORIES by N.K. Jemisin

Waiting on Wednesdays is the brainchild of Jill at Breaking the Spine, and because Jill isn’t hosting it any more, I’m now linking up with Can’t Wait Wednesday at Wishful Endings. Stop over there and link up your “Can’t Wait” book of the week!

This kick-ass cover was just revealed on the Orbit website, and I just had to share:

In these stories, Jemisin sharply examines modern society, infusing magic into the mundane, and drawing deft parallels in the fantasy realms of her imagination. Dragons and hateful spirits haunt the flooded city of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In a parallel universe, a utopian society watches our world, trying to learn from our mistakes. A black mother in the Jim Crow south must figure out how to save her daughter from a fey offering impossible promises. And in the Hugo award-winning novella “The City Born Great,” a young street kid fights to give birth to an old metropolis’s soul.

How Long ’til Black Future Month?: Stories by N.K. Jemisin. Releases in November 2018 from Orbit Books. In case you haven’t been paying attention, Jemisin just made history by being the first person to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel three years in a row. Pretty amazing, right? But not too surprising because The Broken Earth trilogy was brilliant. This is her first short story collection, and I’m very excited to check it out.

Let me know what you’re waiting on this week:-D

  1. Ohh, I love this. I’ve been a die-hard fan di NK Jemisin since the beginning, and I’ve literally *cried* at her speech for her third Hugo Award! Thanks for this review.

  2. Ooh, I didn’t know this was a thing! I’ve yet to read any of her books, but I’m hoping to soon. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for this one, sounds like they will be some interesting stories.

They do sound good, and based on the books I’ve read of hers, I’m sure it will be a fantastic collection:-)

  3. Nice. Several of those short story premises in the blurb had me thinking “cool” lol. I’ll definitely take a hard look at this one!

I don’t think I’ve read any of her short stories, so I’m very curious to check out this book.

  4. I think I’ll stick with her novels, but I hope you short fiction aficionados will enjoy this one! 😀 And speaking of which, I still haven’t finished her Broken Earth trilogy, I should probably get on that!

I haven’t either! It just came out at a bad time for my schedule and sort of got pushed to the back. I hope I can pick it up soon:-)

  5. I hadn’t heard that she’d won the Hugo for the third year in a row – but I’m not at all surprised. The Broken Earth trilogy is a masterpiece. This collection sounds wonderful – I look forward to hearing what you make of it, Tammy:)

  6. Mmm, what Mogsy said. I’m always tempted with the short stories but 99% of the time they’re not really for me – which makes me feel bad, because, I know that i’m gong to feel that way so why ask for a copy. It’s not rocket science I suppose – but, I see a book and …..
    Lynn 😀
