The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “To be a legend, you’ve either got to be dead, or excessively old!” – A cover with a title featuring the word “legend.”
So I could only come up with one book for this week’s prompt, and I have a feeling I’m not going to be alone in choosing this book. I Am Legend by Richard Matheson is famous not only because it’s a classic horror story, but because it was also a very successful and well-done movie (in my opinion, anyway). It’s also a good choice because there are a TON of covers, since it was written in 1954. I’ve selected some of my favorites, so you really can’t go wrong with any of these:
Millenium 1999 | Spanish 2003
Portuguese 2015 | Bulgarian 1998
Croatian 2008 | Corgi (English) 1977
Serbian 2003 | Corgi (English) 1956
Spanish (year?) | Portuguese 1984
Some of these covers really show their age! I love the 70s vibe of the last one, and the Corgi 1956 has a pulp feel to it.There are about four that I really love, but in the end I’m going to say the Croatian edition is my overall favorite:
I love the red color in the cover, and I LOVE the title/author font. But it’s hard to choose!
Which one is your favorite?
Next week: A cover featuring a goblin or dwarves.
Ohh.. this one was among the novels that hooked forever to spec fic! It scared the hell out of me when I was a kid and I have never forgotten it. Thanks for this 🙂
Glad I could bring back some good memories, it really is a fantastic book!
That’s the one I like the best too although I have to admit I was drawn to the pink on the Portuguese edition. However, I have NEVER thought of pink when I thought about this book.
I was surprised how much I love that pink Portuguese cover too! I think it’s the overall design, it’s really well done.
Ouuuu! Great choice I like that one as well, but they’re all pretty fantastic. They’ve all got that like 80s horror movie vibe to them.
Yeah, I loved doing this book because there are so many covers to choose from!
Oh good one. I’ve always wanted to read this one. Like the cover you went with too.
It’s a classic, I feel like I need to do a reread at some point:-)
I actually like the wolf. I haven’t seen that one.
That cover is so different from the others, it does draw your attention!
I like the Corgi (English) 1956 edition best! Like you said it has a pulp feeling to it 🙂

Yes, I’m not sure how well the Corgi edition goes with the story, but it’s a cool cover:-)
oh I like the Spanish one [of course! lol] because that’s my fav color! 😉 I loved the movie I wonder if the book is that good!

I read the book quite a long time ago, but I do remember it’s very different from the movie.
They’re all pretty cool so it’s hard to pick a favorite. I love the pulp feel that several of them have, but think the Croatian is going to end up being my favorite.
The Croation edition has such a great color scheme, it’s hard not to pick it:-)
I like your choice but partial to the pulp looking cover of the Corgi edition. It looks like a great poster!

I love that cover too, I mean it just screams 70s!
Lynn has the same book but quite a different selection of covers:). My favourite is the same choice as yours – it is really effective and those colours do pop, don’t they?
Yes, I had a feeling I wouldn’t be the only one to pick I Am Legend. I had a tough time with this one!
I love your choice! I did see this book featured at Lynn’s too, but she picked the creepy one 😛 😉 My favorite is probably the hot pink Portuguese edition.
Lynn and I actually picked all different covers except one, maybe. It shows you how many are out there!
This series of covers is so fascinating because all I know of this book is actually the movie, which yes not the best thing in the entire world to have in your mind of this book. But that vibe from the movie is what I have in my head for this book and these covers tell me a story that is so *horror* (I will admit it is entirely possible I need to refresh my memory of the movie!
I still like the 1999 cover most and the 1956 is probably my second favorite.
Ahh! Where is my comment. Doh. I love your choice for this one – it’s not a cover I spotted or used. The pink is very popular – it was on my selection of covers too.
Lynn 😀
I’ve only seen the movie, but ever since I learned it was a book (while I was blogging), I’ve wanted to try it out some day. I hear they’re not similar at all too! Gosh them covers though hahaha in all honesty, none of them really stand out for me. 😛
