The Friday Face-Off – Dinosaur

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme:  “Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the earth.” – A cover featuring a dinosaur.

I can’t say I’ve read very many books that feature dinosaurs, so I had to really think about this week’s theme. The obvious choice was Jurassic Park, and I just refused to go there (me and “popular” don’t always get along). I finally remembered this hysterically funny series that I read long before my blog came along, which reminded me that I’d love to catch up with Eric Garcia’s latest releases. He’s so good!

Anonymous Rex has the most ridiculous idea ever, but somehow it works: Dinosaurs never became extinct. Instead they faked extinction and decided to blend in with humans, disguising themselves in latex “human” suits. Vincent Rubio is actually a Velociraptor, but he’s also a private investigator. And it’s been years since I read these books, but I do remember a fair amount of sex between humans and disguised dinosaurs. OMG I need to reread this book!

2003 Berkley US Paperback | 2000 Random House US Hardcover

2001 HarperCollins | 2002 German edition

The “dinosaur” aspect is very subtle on these covers, but I think it works great. Once again I have to mention that book cover design has grown by leaps and bounds in the last ten to fifteen years or so, so to me these all seem very dated. But still, I think my favorite is the edition I own, which is:

Which one do you like best?

  1. OMG I think I need this book in my life. I like the Berkley edition but the German one comes in a close second. I love the expression in the eyes. I think the Berkley cover would still be quite fetching on a book published in 2018. (running off to look for this book).

  2. What a fantastic choice – and I completely agree with your chosen cover. I thought this week might be difficult or we’d all end up using The Lost World or Jurassic Park.
    Lynn 😀

  3. Without knowing anything about the book I agree with your choice! Its a cool cover! But it looks very middle grade ish to me and if you said there is a lot of sex then it probably isn’t a middle grade book? So maybe they need a more adult cover?

It’s definitely not middle grade, but I know what you mean, the cover is very cartoonish.

  4. Ooo… I LOVE the sound of this one! And your favourite is clearly the best cover. I think you’ve got the best book this week:)). It’s certainly the one I want to read, Tammy.

This was such a fun book, and it’s the start to a series, so there is lots to love!

  5. That is a pretty awesome premise. 🙂 For me it’s a toss up between the first two- I love both! The first one almost has a noir feel, and the second one- I just love the green background and the tail. Awesome!

I saw a couple of Jurassic Park posts and I have to admit that book has some AWESOME covers!
