Waiting on Wednesdays is the brainchild of Jill at Breaking the Spine, and because Jill isn’t hosting it any more, I’m now linking up with Can’t Wait Wednesday at Wishful Endings. Stop over there and link up your “Can’t Wait” book of the week!
I NEED to read another Lauren Beukes book soon! Luckily there is one on the horizon that sounds fantastic:
This is America, but not like you know it. Years after the decimation of the male population by a super-virus, the country has refashioned itself with new laws, new customs, and new methods of shame and punishment. Now, hiding a living and healthy male is one of the gravest offenses, rivaled only by the murder of a man. Cole is a mother on the run, guilty of both crimes, and desperate to find a safe life for her adolescent boy Miles.
As the two drift throughout the transformed states of the West, they hide Miles’ identity while evading a mysterious, powerful man bent on justice. From a commune in the Rockies to a high security laboratory in the redwoods of northern California, the two tensely negotiate an existence on the fringes of a new America.
Cole’s goal for her son and herself is escape, a family in South Africa, a slim chance at a better life. Mother and child see their chance, at last, in the wanderings and secret goals of a cult–if only Cole can keep Miles’ true self hidden, and as long as they can stay one step ahead of an ex-boyfriend from hell.
A brilliant blend of psychological suspense, American noir, and trenchant science fiction, MOTHERLAND is the story that Lauren Beukes’ myriad fans have been waiting for.
Motherland by Lauren Beukes. Releases in April 2019 from Mulholland Books. So yeah, this is a whole year away from publication! It’s not like I don’t have plenty to read in the meantime, but I am excited about a new Beukes novel. Also, I adore this cover, although it makes the story look more contemporary/thriller-ish than science fiction.
Wow, April 2019. Honestly this sounds really cool. I’ve seen stories where the females are the ones in demand, but not male. I’m curious to see how this will turn out. I hope you enjoy this book when you get the chance to read it!
Have a fantastic day, Tammy. =)
Check out my WoW post!

It definitely sounds like she took a trope and turned it on its head. Hope it’s good!
This does sound pretty good but you are right, that’s quite a long wait!

Too long a way, I think:-/
Yes, I NEED this one as well!! It’s been a while since her last book!

It has been several years, right?
This one does sound interesting indeed. Yes, a year away, but happily we won’t be without other books, right? LOL

Yep, it’s really far away! Definitely add it to GR:-)
Uh this looks awesome!!
I know, right?
Oh wow, does this sound amazing! Thanks for bringing this one to my attention.
I hope we both get the chance to read it:-)
There are a bunch of stories about girls pretending to be boys, but not the other way around, so that’s quite unique. I hope you love it!
I agree, that’s one of the reasons it grabbed my attention:-)
I am really intrigued by this one! A super virus is something that is a very real thing that can happen, which makes it sound so realistic. I want to know more about Cole and what happens next. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
It definitely has a scary, realistic feel to it, and the cover sort of feels that way to me too.
I love the sound of this one, it sounds like an inverted version of The Handmaid’s Tale…
Oh you are right! Should be interesting:-)
Oh wow, such an interesting concept! I can see why you made this your WOW pick this week!
It does sound interesting, I can’t wait:-)
Ugh, I could have sworn when I first added this book to my goodreads the release date was not a full year out! 🙁 Wow, guess it’s a longer wait than I thought!

I’m impressed that there’s a cover already, a year out!
I agree about the cover, but I think I like the sound of this one too. Too bad it’s so far away!! We need it soonerrrr….

Whew. How intense does this sound??! I have tried to get into her other books, but haven’t quite made it!
The only book I read by Beukes was “The Shining Girls” and I loved it: since then I’ve been intending to pick up more of her books but never managed it, and this might very well be the novel that will finally help me take that step.
It sounds like a very, very gripping story indeed. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Colour me happy and count me in. I will definitely read this one. Love this author.
Lynn 😀
Oh wow, this sounds like it’s going to be pretty intense. And the whole idea of a super virus is terrifying because it seems like something that could definitely happen. Great pick!
