Waiting on Wednesdays is the brainchild of Jill at Breaking the Spine, and because Jill isn’t hosting it any more, I’m now linking up with Can’t Wait Wednesday at Wishful Endings. Stop over there and link up your “Can’t Wait” book of the week!
Molly Tanzer wrote Creatures of Will & Temper, which I reviewed last year and really enjoyed. I was excited to see she has a new book coming out, and despite the similarity of the titles and cover art styles, this does not appear to be a sequel:
Amityville baywoman Ellie West fishes by day and bootlegs moonshine by night. It’s dangerous work under Prohibition–independent operators like her are despised by federal agents and mobsters alike–but Ellie’s brother was accepted to college and Ellie’s desperate to see him go. So desperate that when wealthy strangers ask her to procure libations for an extravagant party Ellie sells them everything she has, including some booze she acquired under unusual circumstances.
What Ellie doesn’t know is that this booze is special. Distilled from foul mushrooms by a cult of diabolists, those who drink it see terrible things–like the destruction of Long Island in fire and flood. The cult is masquerading as a church promising salvation through temperance and a return to “the good old days,” so it’s hard for Ellie to take a stand against them, especially when her father joins, but Ellie loves Long Island, and she loves her family, and she’ll do whatever it takes to ensure neither is torn apart.
Creatures of Want & Ruin by Molly Tanzer. Releases in November 2018 from John Joseph Adams/Mariner Books. I have a soft spot for speculative fiction stories that involve mushrooms (I may be the first blogger to write that particular sentence!) and one of these days I’m going to compile a list of “mushroom” books I love. I love that this is another historical story from Tanzer, and take a look at the gorgeous cover art!
Yep, I’m excited for this one too! Creatures of Will & Temper was good but not my favorite? But this one takes place in the Prohibition Era, and I love books set in that time!

I enjoyed Creatures of Will & Temper, but I did have some issues with it. Not enough to NOT read this, though!
…. i really want to see your list of books about mushroom books you love! This cover is something else — it’s so striking! And I like Ellie!
Ha ha, I’m going to start working on that list:-)
This does sound like twisted fun and that cover is killer!

“Twisted fun,” great description:-)
The Prohibition era is one of my favorite times periods, add in a cult and you got me! It sounds like an amazing mix! Great pick!,
I agree, it does sound like a great mix:-)
I really want to get to Creatures of Will & Temper! I read wonderful things about that book! Hope you like this one as much as you did book 1. I had to smile when I saw your blog header. I almost used that image as my blog header too! Love the concept of a mind machinating! 🙂 I went with a very similar one 🙂 Glad to have discovered your blog!

Oh that’s so funny! I went to your blog and it’s amazing how similar the images are. I did a bunch of stuff on Photoshop with my image so it’s changed a bit from the original image:-)
This sounds different…lol. 🙂 Interesting cover! Mushrooms make me think of either Mario Brothers or Alice in Wonderland…lol.
Oh definitely Alice in Wonderland for me!
The cover is gorgeous and the plot sounds pretty interesting. I eagerly await your review 🙂
I think it’s a nice combo of elements, we’ll see…
I do love the cover. Would love to see your mushroom book list too. Hope you enjoy it!

Ha ha you’d be surprised how many science fiction stories I’ve read that center around mushrooms:-)
Sounds really intriguing and the covers for both are incredibly striking.
Lynn 😀
I love these covers, some of my all time favorites:-)
That’s an amazing premise and I love the cover. It’s a bit of a wait, but we’re not going anywhere, are we? So I look forward to hearing what you make of this one:))
It does seem far away, although time usually flies and I’m sure it will be here before we know it:-)
Mushrooms huh? It’s hard to believe this isn’t a sequel given the cover. Either way, you once again have successfully reminded me of another book I need ti read, Right now I’m in a mini-slump and HAVE to finish The Hunger tonight. Great choice.
I know, I’d love to know the connection between these books. Good luck with your slump, Barb!
Someone’s been making sacrifices to the cover gods. lol

Ha ha, you are right:-)
Ooh, can’t wait!
Wow, that cover is amazing! The premise of the book is fascinating too and I love that it’s set during Prohibition.
I would definitely check out that mushroom list! Seriously, a cult distilling mushrooms into a drink that causes visions- what’s not to like lol? Love the sound of this!

Interesting, I would have totally thought that was a sequel too, based on the cover and title. I thought it was a YA too (but it dosesn’t seem like it?) because of the _____ of ____ and ____ format of the title 😀

Intriguing premise and equally intriguing choice of historical period: this is one I will keep on my radar.
Thanks for sharing! 🙂

OMG!! What an AMAZING pick!!! I LOVE that cover!! At first I thought this was SF, but it’s really more of a quirky cult story. Like Stormi, I am reminded of “Alice In Wonderland”, one of my favorite classics EVER. So I’m DEFINITELY adding this one to my Goodreads shelves!! I had not heard of it before, either. I’m also adding “Creatures of Will & Temper”, the cover of which I also ADORE!! And btw, I didn’t know there were a whole bunch of “mushroom books”. I thought “Alice In Wonderland” was the only one, until now! Lol.
Thanks for featuring this book, as well as the previous one! Thanks as well for commenting on my “Can’t Wait Wednesday” post!! <3 🙂 ( Sorry about the late comment back……:( )
