Waiting on Wednesday is the brainchild of Breaking the Spine, although Jill isn’t hosting this meme anymore. In any case, I will continue to post Waiting on Wednesdays, simply because it’s one of my favorite posts to do each week:-D
I’m so excited about this week’s pick. Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic is one of my favorites of hers, and I would even say one of my all time favorite books. According to the blurb, this is a prequel to Practical Magic:
From beloved author Alice Hoffman comes the spellbinding prequel to her bestseller, Practical Magic.
Find your magic.
For the Owens family, love is a curse that began in 1620, when Maria Owens was charged with witchery for loving the wrong man.
Hundreds of years later, in New York City at the cusp of the sixties, when the whole world is about to change, Susanna Owens knows that her three children are dangerously unique. Difficult Franny, with skin as pale as milk and blood red hair, shy and beautiful Jet, who can read other people’s thoughts, and charismatic Vincent, who began looking for trouble on the day he could walk.
From the start Susanna sets down rules for her children: No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic. And most importantly, never, ever, fall in love. But when her children visit their Aunt Isabelle, in the small Massachusetts town where the Owens family has been blamed for everything that has ever gone wrong, they uncover family secrets and begin to understand the truth of who they are. Back in New York City each begins a risky journey as they try to escape the family curse.
The Owens children cannot escape love even if they try, just as they cannot escape the pains of the human heart. The two beautiful sisters will grow up to be the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in Practical Magic, while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy. Thrilling and exquisite, real and fantastical, The Rules of Magic is a story about the power of love reminding us that the only remedy for being human is to be true to yourself.
The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman releases in October from Simon & Schuster. I’m so curious to read this. I love when authors go back in time to tell the stories of the people who came before, and I’m hoping this works! Plus, that cover. Wow.
I already have this one on my wishlist. I have to admit I saw the movie Practical Magic and loved it years before I read the book. When I finally got around to it, I loved it as well. I’m really excited for this one too. It will be so nice to visit that world again. And you are right, great cover!

I love the movie and the book, which is rare!
I still have not had the pleasure of reading Alice Hoffman! I’d love to one day though, since so many readers seem to love her 🙂

She writes magic realism, so if you enjoy that genre, you should try her sometime!
I’m also extremely curious to read this one! I never thought it needed a prequel but… I’ll be reading this regardless!

Alice Hoffman!! Oh yes yes yes. Wait – was that movie a book? By Alice Hoffman? I didn’t even know! It’s really too bad I know what happens, but I ADORED that movie. Maybe I should still read the book, and then this one? Cause Alice Hoffman, OMG, right? Haha 😀

Yes, the book came first! It’s one of my favorite movies too:-)
Hoffman has been on my tbr for years! I remember reading one of her ya books as a teen and it has stuck with me. Maybe this one will finally be enough motivation to pick her up again 😀 Thanks, Tammy!
Tammy I am so with you on this one. I love Alice Hoffman and have also been reading her books for years. I’d had my eye on this one but was awaiting the cover – and here it is.
Definitely very excited for this.
Lynn 😀
That is a nice cover, and I haven’t read Hoffman but this does sound good and really interesting.

How have I not heard of this one yet?! Anything even remotely witchy is going to appeal to me, and I adored Practical Magic too. Thanks for putting this on my radar, Tammy!
