Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine, and is a fun way to share upcoming books you’re excited about with other bloggers and readers.
I’m a huge Valente fan, and I’m excited to see a new book from her coming out this year!
The lives of six female superheroes and the girlfriends of superheroes. A ferocious riff on women in superhero comics.
From the New York Times bestselling author Catherynne Valente comes a series of linked stories from the points of view of the wives and girlfriends of superheroes, female heroes, and anyone who’s ever been “refrigerated”: comic book women who are killed, raped, brainwashed, driven mad, disabled, or had their powers taken so that a male superhero’s storyline will progress.
In an entirely new and original superhero universe, Valente subversively explores these ideas and themes in the superhero genre, treating them with the same love, gravity, and humor as her fairy tales. After all, superheroes are our new fairy tales and these six women have their own stories to share.
The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente, Illustrated by Annie Wu. Releases in June 2017 from Saga Press. I believe this is a graphic novel, which is a bit unusual coming from Saga Press, but I’m not complaining! Subverting the superhero theme is a favorite trope of mine, so I’m very curious to check this out.
I’ve vowed that 2017 will finally be the year of Valente! The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland has been on my shelves for *ages* and I also have a copy of Radiance. This one sounds equally compelling – I love a good graphic novel!

Ooh, read Radiance! That book is so weird and quirky, but I really loved it.
How can you resist a book with this title? Plus, it sounds really good. Whether it be a graphic novel or not, this is something I want to read!

I love the title, and it doesn’t sound anything like the story, which really intrigues me:-)
What a bizarre title! I had to read it twice to make sure I saw it correctly. 😀 Six female superheroes, now you don’t see that every day! I hope you enjoy this book when you get a chance to read it, Tammy.
Have a wonderful week. =)

I just found out what “Refrigerator” in the title is referring to, and it’s not at all what you think (girls/women who are murdered and then stuffed into a refrigerator). Sounds dark and funny at the same time!
Ha! I follow Valente on Facebook and I saw her talking about this but I actually thought it was a joke. This is awesome.

Ha ha, no I think it’s real! lol
I read very few graphic novels, but have to admit that makes this one more intriguing for me. 🙂

This does look like fun. I’m still not 100% it’s a true graphic novel, but I’m very curious:-)
Hmm, this sounds really interesting! I’ll have to check it out when it comes out. Great pick! You can check out my WOW in the link below.

I still have yet to read anything by Valente, but hopefully this will be the year that changes. Heh heh, would a graphic novel count? This sounds so interesting, though I should probably start with one of her novels 🙂

I’d start with Radiance, very odd but wonderful:-)
Ooh!! Something new from Valente! Seems like a very good topic as well. Definitely marking this one down, thank you for drawing my attention to it.

It looks like fun, right? Thanks for stopping by:-)
First time seeing this one, and I like it! Is this a graphic novel or does Annie just have drawings throughout the book?
I’m not sure. Maybe just scattered drawings? Guess we’ll have to wait and find out!
Haha – this is brilliant! I like the idea of an illustrated novel plus Valente!
Lynn 😀
OMG! This sounds amazing! And YES to the POVs of those who are fridged!
