Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews, and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
My resolve to request fewer review books holds strong, and even though my last book haul post was a month ago, my haul is quite manageable. I also received one of my Subterranean Press pre-orders, which I’m very excited to share with you! So let’s get right to it, shall we?
Physical books:
It Happened One Doomsday by Laurence MacNaughton. Thanks to Pyr for pitching this to me! It sounds like a bunch of fun. A woman who isn’t magically talented in a land of magic, must save the world.
The City’s Son by Tom Pollock. I was thrilled when a publicist from Jo Fletcher Books contacted me about this title. I know it was released a few years ago, so this must be a re-release. In any case, I know some of my blogging buddies have read and loved this, so I’m very excited! Plus I’ll be interviewing the author as well, so check back later this month for that.
Fellside by M.R. Carey. Big thanks to Orbit for this finished copy! I’m reading this at the moment, and even though it’s quite different from The Girl with All the Gifts, I’m enjoying it so far.
Masks and Shadows by Stephanie Burgis. Thank you Pyr for this finished copy:-) They always take such good care of me! I hope to read this next. I started it and was instantly hooked. I love the writing and it seems like it’s going to suck me in very quickly:-)
Pathfinder Tales: Hellknight by Liane Merciel. I am not familiar with Pathfinder AT ALL so I may take a pass on this, especially since Goodreads claims this is #33 in the series (!!) Has anyone out there read these books? If you’re a fan and you want this copy, let me know, I’m happy to pass it on:-) Thanks to Tor!
I got a couple of cool packages this week, both of them unexpected:
The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi. I had requested this from my St. Martin’s publicist, but this package came from someone else. But hey, I’m not complaining—I was super excited to open an envelope with gold stars all over it, unwrap a book covered in star paper, and they even included some Star-Touched Queen tattoos! Thank you Griffin Teen, I can’t wait to read this!
Then I got a surprise from Switch Press (a publisher I am coming to love, since I just read the AMAZING Railhead), Children of Icarus by Caighlan Smith, complete with a black feather and sparkly gold packing envelope. This looks like fun:-) Thank you Switch Press!
Digital books for review:
A Green and Ancient Light by Frederic S. Durbin. Another Saga Press title that looks really good. They have yet to disappoint me, and I’m looking forward to this story that’s being compared to Pan’s Labyrinth. Thanks Saga!
Warrior Witch by Danielle L. Jensen. The third book in The Malediction Trilogy is a May release, but I may try to read it this month. I wasn’t crazy about book two, but I’m hoping Jensen wraps up her trilogy with a bang:-) Thank you to Angry Robot!
And two new Tor.com novellas that look really good: Nightshades by Melissa F. Olson looks like an urban fantasy, and Infomocracy by Malka Ann Older is an SF political thriller that seems…very timely:-) Thank you Tor.com!
Purchased:
My pre-order from Subterranean Press of Ready Player One just arrived, and it’s beautiful! There are several full color illustrations inside, it’s signed by Cline, and there’s even a RPO fan fiction in the back written by Andy Weir.
Other fun stuff:
I recently backed a cool Kickstarter project by Apex Publications called Upside Down: Inverted Tropes in Storytelling. Unfortunately for those who are just hearing about this, the campaign is over, and the project was successfully funded, so it may be too late to get in on the action. But this anthology sounds really cool. I mean, who doesn’t love to see authors messing around with tropes? You can read more about the book here, and hopefully you’ll be able to get a copy yourself at some point.
So there’s my book haul…see anything interesting?
This edition of Ready Player One is GORGEOUS *__*
I requested A Green and Ancient Light and I really hope that it is going to be accepted because it sounds wonderful!
I hope you get it too! I’m looking forward to reading it, and I love the title:-)
Most of these are new.to me. Looks like a good haul, though
Thanks for visiting! Hopefully you saw something new that interests you:-)
I got a copy of Pathfinder Tales: Hellknight this week as well. I still have Pathfinder Tales: Bloodbound waiting for a read, but I’ll definitely be getting into Pathfinder.
Now I’m curious to read it. It came unsolicited but I’ve heard good things, so maybe if there is time…
You got a lot of great looking books. I don’t think I have heard of any of them but some sound great. Enjoy! 🙂
Thanks for stopping by:-)
So many awesome sounding books – I’m really looking forward to Masks and Shadows and The Star-Touched Queen. Nightshade and Infomacracy sound like they have a lot of potential. I’ve heard Infomacracy get compared to Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash!
I haven’t read Snow Crash but now I’m even more curious to read Infomocracy!
What a delight it is to contemplate such… bounty 🙂 and to ponder where to start: it makes you feel as if it’s Christmas morning all over again, doesn’t it?

Agreed! It’s hard to know where to start. I guess I’ll go in order of release date;-)
Yay, so glad you got your copy of Fellside! And I read The City’s Son a couple years ago and I’m pretty sure it was from JFB UK, so this must be the US release – it’s about time this series came stateside! And can you believe I’ve never read a Pathfinder book? Me and my husband and a group of friends have been playing the RPG going on three years, I’ve always wanted to try the novels but have still never taken the leap. Hellknight will be my first 🙂 I’ve also heard amazing things about the Star-Touched Queen, I look forward to your review of it and if you give it your mark of approval I may want try the audiobook!

Oh, btw, as far as I know, all the Pathfinder Tales are standalones. So, feel free to jump in even at #33…I know I am, lol. And I believe you don’t need to know anything at all about the game, if you’re jumping in blind, all you need to know it’s that it’s a world much like any high fantasy D&D type universe.

That definitely makes me want to read this more. I have so many books that I requested this month, so I’m not sure I’ll have time for the unsolicited ones. We’ll see!
I’ve heard really good things about The Star Touched Queen, and I’ll be reading it for sure. I was actually a little worried about Fellside after reading your review (not that it was bad in any way, just that it was slow in parts), but I’m happy to report I’m flying through it faster than I thought. Despite all the prison stuff, which I’m not that excited about, I just love his writing, and I’m hoping the drug mule story line will wind up making sense at some point:-)
Ooooh, that’s great to hear that you already like Masks & Shadows! And I’m curious about The Star-Touched Queen, so I look forward to reading your thoughts on that one, too.
I’ve heard great things about both, such a great month for books!
You got some interesting books this week. I hope you love all of them. They look amazing.

That copy of RPO looks amazing! I subscribe to Subterrain Press’s newsletter, so I always see these gorgeous editions coming out, I’ve just never bought any though.
It’s really beautiful, sorry my photos are really bad. I don’t usually splurge like this but RPO is one of my favorite books and I wanted a limited edition of it.
I’m doing pretty good on my resolve for less review books too. Working on my TBR and making progress there also. Then I come here and see your books. Yikes.LOL Look out Amazon:) We certainly have the same taste.

I’m glad we have the same taste in books! So sorry about adding to your TBR pile (well not really!)
I’ve seriously have to stop looking at your hauls! I have the Doomsday book as well.
Ha ha. The Doomsday book looks like fun:-)
Hi Tammy, thanks for checking out my debut book, It Happened One Doomsday! Just yesterday, Publishers Weekly called it “Fascinating.” And I just found out that Barnes & Noble will be featuring it on their front table display. It’s all happening because of the help from early reviewers like you. Thank you so much!
I applaud your resolve, you’re much better at sticking to requesting a few books than I am! I always seem to be drowning under a back-log of review books with no one to blame but myself, haha. I’m very excited to hear that you loved the opening of Masks and Shadows because I’ve been salivating over that cover + synopsis combo for quite some time!
Danya @ Fine Print recently posted…Review: Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop
I’m reading Masks and Shadows and I like how different it is from the books I’ve read recently. Hope you get the chance to read it:-)
Yeah, I’m also kind of sitting in the guilty tent with Danya – so I’ve been trying to be more careful the last couple of months because I started to feel a bit overwhelmed. I’m just about to start Masks and Shadows which seems to be getting some great reviews. I love the sound of Green and Ancient Light – I think I saw that on NG but not sure it was available UK. I absolutely adore the artwork for Upside Down, it’s gorgeous.
Happy April.
Lynn 😀
It’s so hard to resist requesting books, I don’t know how anyone does it, honestly. Oh well, we do the best we can, right?
I am liking your edition of Ready Player One with the illustrations. May have to get a copy! Happy reading.
