Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine, and is a fun way to share upcoming books that you’re excited about with other bloggers and readers. I loved Rosamund Hodge’s Cruel Beauty, and it looks like she’s continuing her trend of story retellings. This time she’s tackling Romeo and Juliet:
When the mysterious fog of the Ruining crept over the world, the living died and the dead rose. Only the walled city of Viyara was left untouched.
The heirs of the city’s most powerful—and warring—families, Mahyanai Romeo and Juliet Catresou share a love deeper than duty, honor, even life itself. But the magic laid on Juliet at birth compels her to punish the enemies of her clan—and Romeo has just killed her cousin Tybalt. Which means he must die.
Paris Catresou has always wanted to serve his family by guarding Juliet. But when his ward tries to escape her fate, magic goes terribly wrong—killing her and leaving Paris bound to Romeo. If he wants to discover the truth of what happened, Paris must delve deep into the city, ally with his worst enemy . . . and perhaps turn against his own clan.
Mahyanai Runajo just wants to protect her city—but she’s the only one who believes it’s in peril. In her desperate hunt for information, she accidentally pulls Juliet from the mouth of death—and finds herself bound to the bitter, angry girl. Runajo quickly discovers Juliet might be the one person who can help her recover the secret to saving Viyara.
Both pairs will find friendship where they least expect it. Both will find that Viyara holds more secrets and dangers than anyone ever expected. And outside the walls, death is waiting. . . .
Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, Bright Smoke, Cold Fire is a darkly romantic and atmospheric fantasy from acclaimed author Rosamund Hodge. It will be released on September 27th, 2016.
Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge. Releases in September 2016 from Balzer + Bray. Hodge’s writing kind of reminds me of Naomi Novik, and I love the East Indian feel to this story, at least that’s what I’m thinking based on the characters’ names. And a pretty cover doesn’t hurt either!
Let me know what you’re waiting on this week:-)
YASSS!!! This cover is amazing. I really like Hodge’s style! Nice pick. I hope you enjoy it. Have a great week! My WOW

I love her style, too. I find her stories to be so unique:-)
Oh, I haven’t heard of this one yet. Love the cover! And it definitely sounds like it could be good. Great pick 🙂

The cover is so striking and almost tells its own story, right?
After trying two of her books and only giving them three stares and Romeo and Juliet not being my favorite story, I think I will have to pass on this one. I hope you enjoy it though. 🙂
She definitely has a specific style that isn’t for everyone:-)
Saw this one a few weeks ago and even though I never read her other series, I definitely want to check this one out. Also, that cover is very chilling. I really hope we both love it!

This looks excellent, I added it to my goodreads-thank you!!
This looks great – plus I feel that fate wants me to read this book. Top Ten Tuesday my opening title was Dire Straits Romeo and Juliet and now WoW is this! I must read this book. Plus that cover is a bit awesome isn’t it!
Lynn 😀
I was eyeing this one too! But I figure I really should read her previous books first. Both Cruel Beauty and Crimson Bound have been on my TBR forever! 😀

I’m not sure if I’m going to read this yet. The blurb didn’t quite capture my interest. But the cover is beautiful, though. I hope you enjoy this when it comes out in a few months.
I JUST saw this yesterday on Goodreads when I was looking for a book to pick! The blurb is a little iffy for me, but I do enjoy the author’s retelling style, so I’m sure it’ll be a good take on Romeo and Juliet.

I don’t know how I’ve avoided reading anything by this author (Cruel Beauty appeals most to me). Adore this cover though and love the idea of a different take on R&J!

Wow! Okay, I’ll admit, I followed the pretty cover to this post. This sounds really interesting though. I’ll have to add Hodge to my TBR pile! Thanks for the tip!
Amusingly, I didn’t even realize that Hodge was publishing a book this year and then I saw this cover reveal and I think my jaw literally dropped. I love that it has the same style as her previous books, but it has so many more details that hint at a crazy unique and intricate story. I’m beyond excited!!!
Ah! I didn’t know that Hodge was releasing another book this year! This one looks fantastic and I love that cover. This is one I’ll have to pre-order when it gets closer to the date.
