Tammy’s Top Ten 2015 Book Purchases I Didn’t Get to Read

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and the Bookish, where each week bloggers are given a different top ten theme to talk about. This week we’re listing our top ten books in 2015 that we meant to read but didn’t, and I’m narrowing it down and listing my top ten eleven books I purchased but didn’t read. Ah, such a bittersweet topic! It makes me cry to see this unread pile, although looking at these also makes me extremely happy. Yes, I have a pile of unread review books from 2015 as well, but I want to focus on books I actually plunked down money for! And here’s the proof:

ttt meant to read

Speak Easy by Catherynne M. Valente. I bought this (rather pricey) novella from Subterranean Press and thought it would be a shoo-in to read. It’s only 142 pages, after all.

Vermilion by Molly Tanzer. Newish small publisher Word Horde lured me in with this gorgeous cover and intriguing story, but for some reason I just never found the time to read it.

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. I’ve seen this pop up on some 2015 “Best of” lists, and I hope to squeeze it in this year.

The Fold by Peter Clines. I bought a copy after reading many rave reviews on some blogs I trust, and it’s just a matter of time. I will read this at some point!

The Border by Robert McCammon. Another Sub Press title, I’ve heard amazing things about this alien invasion story.

Persona by Genevieve Valentine. Some mixed reviews on this one, but it still sounds good to me.

Love in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction by Judd Trichter. Who can resist a tale of android/human love? I certainly can’t:-)

Gold Fame Citrus by Claire Vaye Watkins. It looks more like literary fiction, but this is actually a post-apocalyptic story that got some amazing pre-pub reviews.

Carter & Lovecraft by Jonathan L. Howard. I just adore this cover—I have a thing for octopi—and it’s pretty short, but it just got buried at the bottom of a pile:-(

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. Everyone has read this but me, I’m sure! Bardugo’s latest got mostly good reviews, plus it’s a gorgeous book.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson. I bought a copy of this very well-reviewed graphic novel, and I’m glad I did. Even though I haven’t read it yet, it’s on board to be one of my first graphic novels of the year (I’m trying to read one a month).

I’d love to read at least half of these this year. That shouldn’t be so hard, right? Have you read any of these? Which should I start with?

  1. I’m reading Six of Crows right now and really enjoying it. I like that Bardugo isn’t pulling punches with the world her characters live in, which I feel sometimes happens in the young adult fantasy genre.

I love the sound of Speak Easy (and wow that cover is awesome!) and Vermilion. I’m adding both of those to my library hold list.

  2. I haven’t read any of the books on your list. :S But if I had come up with my own, the first four that come to mind are V.E. Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic, George R.R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Jason Denzel’s Mystic, and Ilana C. Meyer’s Last Song Before Night.

  3. I finally just finished, and loved, Vermilion!! Thanks for sending it and I hope you get a chance to read it in the new year!

  4. Such pretty books! Nimona and Six of Crows are on my radar too and several other titles on your list caught my eye. Have fun shopping your bookshelves this year!

  5. Both “The Border” and “Six of Crows” have been sitting in my e-reader for quite a while, but I keep getting distracted by other… pretties 🙂 And I keep hearing great things about “The Library at Mount Char”, so you see, you’re not alone! 😀

  6. I have read one off your list – Six of Crows. Which I enjoyed.
We need to come up with a way of reading faster! There just isn’t enough time.
    Lynn 😀

  7. I haven’t read Six of Crows yet either! But I did just get the audiobook version last week, so hope to get to it soon. .:) the Fold is the only one I have read in its entirety. Library at Mount Char was shockingly a DNF for me, though in all fairness it was not at all the type of book I expected (I tried to read a ways before release, before seeing any reviews) and it didn’t match my mood at all. And I’ve never picked it back up. 🙁

  8. I’ve had a copy of Nimona sitting on my dresser for a few months now, along with a pile of other graphic novels I still have to read! I really need to get better at catching up with my comics this year 🙂

  9. A bunch of lovely (though neglected :P) books you got there! There are just too many books to read, I don’t know how anyone can *not* have a pile as tall as the empire state building, heh. Nimona is in there, I see~do read that one 🙂 It’s actually quite a speedy read and the illustrations are so adorable!
