Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine, and is a fun way to share upcoming books that we’re excited about with other bloggers and readers. This week’s pick isn’t the normal sort of book I read, but I do love anything that deals with music, and I love the book’s whimsical cover:
“Devil-at-the-crossroads” folklore finds its way to YA via this moody, magical tale.
Blue Riley has wrestled with her own demons ever since the loss of her mother to cancer. But when she encounters a beautiful devil at her town crossroads, it’s her runaway sister’s soul she fights to save. The devil steals Blue’s voice—inherited from her musically gifted mother—in exchange for a single shot at finding Cass.
Armed with her mother’s guitar, a knapsack of cherished mementos, and a pair of magical boots, Blue journeys west in search of her sister. When the devil changes the terms of their deal, Blue must reevaluate her understanding of good and evil and open herself to finding family in unexpected places.
In Devil and the Bluebird, Jennifer Mason-Black delivers a heart-wrenching depiction of loss and hope.
Magical boots??? Yes! I’ve read some really good “devil at the crossroads” stories, and I’m hoping this is good too. Devil and the Bluebird by Jennifer Mason-Black will be released in May 2016 from Amulet Books.
Let me know what you’re waiting on:-)
Sounds like it could be good, a bit different, but I’d likely have to read some really good reviews before giving it a try.

I know, it’s not my usual, but I love this cover so I thought, why not?
Definitely sounds like it has potential. I haven’t read many devil at the crossroads type stories, but am aware of the folklore/mythology that goes with it. Hope you enjoy it!

I agree, it’s way far away:-(
I really like the “devil at the crossroads” type of stories, too! One of my favorite movies, and probably the main reason I picked up the guitar, was because of the movie Crossroads. (The one Ralph Macchio, not Britney Spears)
This sounds cool! Though admittedly I was more interested in the themes than the story. I looked up “Devil at the Crossroads” mythology and came across a page on the legend in folk songs and blues. Ooh, is that a clue about how the protagonist was named? I can see a lot of hidden themes and symbols in this one 🙂

Oh, I’ve never heard of this one before, but it sure looks fascinating! I SO want to see Blue outwit the devil in the end. And the idea of folk songs and the devil – great combination! Also, that cover is truly eye-catching. In short, I WANT this one! SO glad you featured it!! : )
Happy Reading!! : )

Why must the mother always die?! But seriously though, this sounds quite interesting. I’ve never read a “devil at the crossroads” type of story before (aside from Doctor Faustus!) so I might give this one a try. Sweet guitar, too!
