I can’t believe it’s the middle of October already. I seem to be making progress on my October TBR at least, and I’m hoping to squeeze in some spooky/scary books in the next two weeks. What’s everyone doing for Halloween this year? Anyone trick-or-treating? My city seems to be completely divided on so many COVID issues, which is very frustrating. We have a contingent who refuses to give out candy because of social distancing (I’m in this group, lol), and then the other side who will do whatever the hell they want, pandemic be damned. I’m half expecting the city to erupt in illegal fireworks again, just like the 4th of July! Ugh.
Anyway, hubby took a trip to our nearby Forest Lawn Mortuary/Cemetery and shot some awesome photos of deer and coyotes (click to see bigger image). And here’s something interesting: he’s decided to self-publish a photography book! I’m very excited about that and so is he. More details when it happens:-D

Tomorrow I’ll be posting my review of Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark. Wow, I loved this you guys! It’s my first Clark book and it certainly won’t be my last. I’ve just started The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher, and I’m hoping to get my review up later in the week, maybe on Thursday. Finally, look for my review of The Easton Falls Massacre by Holly Rae Garcia & Ryan Prentice Garcia as well. I wasn’t crazy about this book and ended up giving it three stars. I’ll explain why in my review!
Upcoming reads:
I’m pretty sure my next book will be Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse. I’m a bit behind as this came out last week, but hey, that’s my life these days…After that I’m dying to read Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman, and I’d love to finally get to one of my “personal” reads this month, Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones.

I’m trying to read this by the end of the month, but in the meantime, I hope you’ll stop by and see why I love Rod’s books so much. The sheriff’s office recommended the kids in our area stay home. I don’t think we’ll get many trick-or-treaters if any at all. It looks like you’ve got some great books coming up, happy reading!

I read the excerpt and it seems like he’s taking the story back to Golgotha, which I’m very happy about. I think the last book was set in a different location.
If we lived where there was trick or treaters I would do it but we live out in the country and nobody comes to us…lol. I think it’s pretty inventive those who are shooting candy down a pipe to the kids. I think there are some safe ways to hand out candy. I haven’t heard of any cancellations where I am from but you never know.

I’ve seen those candy pipes and they are crazy! I wish I had time to make something like that.
Beautiful photos, your husband has been busy doing some fantastic work. I love the greens, and what a relaxed looking deer. And great shot of the coyote doing it’s thing. I haven’t seen one in many, many years. Our county has asked that traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating be cancelled this year. Some locations are advertising trunk-or-treat events in parking lots, and I know of an extremely popular, and usually very crowded, outdoor haunted house location that still hopes to open. We’ll see what happens. All that aside, though, here’s to a great week of reading (and photographing)!
We’re overrun with coyotes at the moment. And residents hate them because of course they come into the neighborhoods and hunt cats:-( Hope you have a great week as well!
Once again, I’m blown away by your husband’s fabulous pictures. And I’m intrigued to discover what you make of Black Sun – I couldn’t get hold of an arc, and given how badly I’ve fallen behind while away – it’s just as well! And – like you – this year I’m not going to be handing out sweets to trick or treaters. But in our country, I’m aware it is far less of a thing than in the States. Have a wonderful week, Tammy

I don’t know if the kids will trick or treat this year Tammy! Honestly if they ring the bell, I’d prefer leaving a bag of candy outside like a self service. Now I hope your husband will have lots of success with his pictures as they are amazing!

I hear you about the vastly differing opinions on Halloween trick-or-treating, haha. We won’t be giving out candy or anything, though in this new apartment I have no idea if there are usually any trick-or-treaters anyway. Those deer and coyote photos are beautiful–and how exciting that he’s publishing a photography book! I can’t wait to see how that progresses. 🙂 Really excited to see your reviews for Ring Shout and The Hollow Places! I’m so behind as well and really need to get to Black Sun. Ive been waiting for some Stephen Graham Jones books to come in at my library, I’m curious to hear your thought on Mongrels!

Your husband’s pictures are awesome. I don’t think there’s anywhere I could go nearby and just see animals like that minding their business.
We’re actually pretty lucky with animals. We live in the suburbs and there are lots of park areas nearby with tons of birds and other animals too.

Thanks Lisa! I did hear that Black Sun is pretty easy to jump into. It looks intimidating but I’ve heard it’s not really, so I’ll be diving in this week:-)
The neighborhood is going to do trick-or-treating but we are not. We bought tons of candy last year and then it stormed badly and hardly anyone came. So we will just leave our porch dark this year. I feel badly but it’s just too much this year. It isn’t like anyone needs candy. I’ll miss decorating and costuming though. Happy reading! I hope you get to all the October reads you want. I’m struggling a bit.
I kind of feel the same. The whole year has been disappointing, what’s one more holiday? I’d rather take a risk on seeing people at Christmas than trying to celebrate Halloween.
It looks like you’ve been reading some good books. I hadn’t realized Rebecca Roanhorse has another book out. I’ll have to go find out more about it!
I don’t know what Iowa is doing about Halloween. Our governor doesn’t say much these days even though infections are soaring. If trick-or-treating is happening in Iowa we will leave our porch light out (though we normally don’t get many since our driveway is long and steep!)

We’re having the Halloween candy debate here in my neighborhood. I’m torn about what to do. I hate to see the kids miss out on a fun holiday but at the same time, it’s hard to figure out how to do it safely since not everyone will comply with whatever safety recommendations are in place. I hope you enjoy the Alice Hoffman book!
I feel like there are other ways to have fun, other than trick or treating. Everyone’s Covid cases are spiking right now and I think after Halloween it will only get worse:-(
That’s very exciting about the photography book! And I’ve decided to give out candy, but in a modified way with a table set up outside the house. I’m thinking I’ll probably have 3-4 candies put out, and I’ll be standing six feet away, wearing a mask and gloves, say hi to the kids ( I do love seeing their costumes every year!) and ask them to each take one and touch nothing else before they go on their merry way, and replenish the table as necessary. I want to be safe but I don’t want kids to miss out on Halloween either, so I figure this way I can get to have both. Other neighbors are coming up with creative solutions like chutes, lol! There is always a way 🙂

Halloween isn’t as big a thing here but the kids still go out but this year I doubt anybody will be going anywhere. The way things are in the UK just now with the COVID tier system I could quite easily see all manner of protests and riots by the time Halloween comes, hopefully not but people are not happy.

I don’t know if there’s going to be trick or treating here or not, but I’m assuming not. Originally we had planned to go away for Halloween but we weren’t sure if the kitchen was going to be done so we scrapped those plans but it may actually be done this week (except for the range which they can’t seem to source at the moment) so….we might have an impromptu trip after all?
