What I thought was a heat wave a couple of weeks ago was NOT a heat wave. The Southern California Heat Wave of 2020 is right now. We’re supposed to get up to 113 today! That’s not normal, folks. I’m hiding in the house reading and prepping blog posts for the week, and that’s about all I’m going to be doing! How’s the weather in your area? I hope it’s not anywhere near as hot as it is here.
This week the hubby took so many cool photos it was hard to choose. I picked three of my favorites (click to see larger images):
I love this full moon photo. You can barely see a radio tower on the hill to the left of the moon, and the sky is a beautiful shade of deep blue. The second photo is a flock of ibis, which is not a bird you normally see here. I suspect they are migrating, but aren’t they cool? And I love this little yellow finch tucked in among some daffodils.
Upcoming reviews:
Two reviews this week, unless a miracle happens and I can post a third. On Monday, look for The Ghost Tree by Christina Henry. I enjoyed this but it definitely isn’t my favorite of Henry’s books. And on Thursday, I’ll review the very hyped The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart. This is a solid fantasy debut with some pretty cool world-building! I can’t say it’s blowing me away, but I definitely recommend it.
Upcoming reads:
You guys, I have so much to read this month and I’m feeling like a deer in headlights—I just don’t know what to read next! I’ve started dipping into Pete Mesling’s short horror story collection Jagged Edges & Moving Parts, and so far I’m enjoying these stories. Look for a review possibly next week. I’ll probably start The Trials of Koli by M.R. Carey next, first because the release date is next week, and second because I’m just so damn excited to read it! And I’m going to really try to read Master of Poisons this week as well. I read the first few chapters and the writing is very different. I can tell this is one of those books that will require some effort and concentration.

I’ve found some awesome books already for Future Fiction on Wednesday, don’t miss it! The Friday Face-Off is “Pattern” which should be fun (I’m still looking for a good book as of writing this), and Saturday I think I’m going to do a special edition of Over-Booked and feature my recent book purchases only. I seem to have gone a bit crazy lately and my new books deserve a post all their own!

One of these days I hope to see an ibis in the wild. I know they sometimes move through this area while migrating, but I’ve yet to see one. The weather here has, thankfully, been pretty nice lately. I don’t envy you the 113 degrees. How’s the humidity? I’ve lived in Arizona and could stand much higher temperatures there than I can here in Virginia when it’s hot and very humid. But 113 degrees is hot any way you look at it. Looking forward to your thoughts on The Ghost Tree and The Bone Shard Daughter.
113 is just really unusual for this area, which is a little worrisome. I’m looking forward to October already:-)
It’s usually either a rainy mudhole or in the 90s around here, but its actually been really nice. It’s actually supposed to be 78 today and 81 tomorrow! 🙂

Your husband takes beautiful photos. I love all of them. I thought our temps in the 90’s today was going to be bad. 113 is just too hot. Kind of a scary temp that you aren’t supposed to have. Staying in and writing reviews and maybe reading is a good choice. I hope it cools off soon.

Oh good grief, Tammy! Those temperatures are INSANE! No wonder you’re indoors and out of the way. Here, it’s rapidly cooling down, already – although the sunny weather today when we went for our jaunt on the big wheel was lovely and sunny.
I hope you enjoy The Trials of Koli as much as I did – I look forward to hearing your opinions on it. There are a LOT of fabulous books suddenly making an appearance! So I also am a tad swamped… And those pics of your husbands are wonderful. That full moon is stunning – it would look wonderful as a book cover! I’m so sorry about the heat! It’s really hot here, too. I tried to put my hammock out yesterday, and it was a big nope. I just can’t do it even in the shade.
I tried to go outside a few times today and it was like walking into a fireplace, just stupid hot!

Beautiful photos! I’m hoping to finish The Ghost Tree today — so far, I’m loving it, but I guess I’ll have to see how it wraps up before knowing my ultimate feeling on it. Finally yesterday our heat broke and we are more in the 80s with lower humidity! It’s great. I think there is supposed to be a cold spell out your way with snow in the Rockies even but maybe it’s only Mtn and Midwest. Yes, climate change is real folks. We were lucky to have a pretty typical year here in NC. I LOVE the photos!

The photos are gorgeous, Tammy. I love the bird, especially. That is super hot! We didn’t have a heatwave like that here this year, or not so far anyway. We sometimes have a week or two above 100 and it’s unbearable, especially with the humidity. I hope things cool off for you soon!

The Ghost Tree was my first Christina Henry book and I did enjoy it – I wonder whether that made it easier, not having read her other works?
I’m also reading the Bone Shard Daughter atm. I’m almost 50% in and enjoying it so far. The world building is fascinating.
