Buffy’s Corner – Looking at the Week Ahead 7/26/20

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D

Happy Sunday, everyone. Can you believe this is the last week of July, ALREADY? I feel like COVID time should be going slower, not faster… I really struggled with reading this week, I’m not sure why. I think it’s that end of the month pressure when I have so many July books left to read with no time to read them all. I really need to work on future TBRs better so I don’t get stressed like this in the future. Tell me I’m not the only one with this problem!

First, a quick update on my home library project. My awesome son has shelved through “D” so far and here is what that looks like:

One thing to note: These shelves are double stacked, so there are two rows of books in each shelf (otherwise I’d run out of bookshelves). We’re cataloging everything on Libib, which is a pretty great library system, and in case you’re wondering, in the photo are 939 books! (And we’re only through D. Let that sink in.)

I love my hubby’s photos this week, take a look (click on the photos to make them bigger):

With comet NEOWISE about to leave our solar system, my husband decided to try to get a photo of it. I think he was pretty successful! The rat eating the orange was taken in our backyard. We have an orange tree which is literally there to feed the rats, possums, raccoons and squirrels, lol. This rat was crafty sneaking down in the middle of the day to eat an orange, but he knows we have dogs so he was being very careful. The bird drinking from the pipe is a finch of some kind, and the cool black birds in the last photo are phainopepla.

Upcoming reviews:

Like I said, this was a weird reading week. I started The Sin and the Steel and I was really struggling with it at the beginning, so I set it aside. Then I picked up Flyaway, which I thought would be a quick read since it’s a novella, and I’m STILL trying to get through it. I’m really not enjoying it that much, but I’m going to push through and try to get my thoughts up later this week. I knew that Random Sh*t Flying Through the Air would be a lot of fun, so I figured I’d try to salvage a horrible week with it, and luckily it worked. I had a ton of fun, and my review will be up tomorrow.

Upcoming reads:

Well, it’s anyone’s guess what I’m actually going to read, but here are three I’d love to cross off my list. I may already be reading Deal with the Devil by the time this post goes up. I’ve been hearing lots of praise for Ashes of the Sun, so I may jump into that next. And I’m determined to read Wonderland too. With August looming, and a HUGE August TBR coming up, I should be reading August releases at this point, but oh well!

The usual memes…

I’m trying to come up with a Top Ten Tuesday Freebie for Tuesday, hopefully I can figure that out soon. On Wednesday, I’ve got three really cool picks for Future Fiction. The Friday Face-Off is “White books” and I just love the color prompts:-) Saturday is August 1st, so check back to see What’s On My Plate for August!

Check out this video!

I’ve been following Stephen Graham Jones on social media (he’s on Twitter ALL the time so if you’re a fan you should be following him) and I stumbled across this awesome video of Victor LaValle chatting with SGJ about his new book, The Only Good Indians. I loved hearing about his writing process and his inspirations for the book. I don’t usually watch long videos, but I watched every second of this one, it was so interesting. Check it out here!

In case you missed…

  1. Looks like you’re making progress on the shelving! One of my short book cases is really deep so I double stack it as well.

There were only a couple of days I could see comet NEOWISE due to cloudy skies but the times I could see it it was spectacular. That’s a great photo!

Just so you know, I’m making heart-eyes at your shelves right now. Your husband has a great eye — is that a shooting star? I just found out about Deal with the Devil in a CWW and omg, I hope you are loving it because mercenary librarians!!

    • Tammy

It’s a comet! It’s probably the only time he’s ever shot one. And so far I’m enjoying Deal with the Devil!

  3. Laurie Harris

Your husband has an amazing eye for photography. His photos are stunning! Love the look of your shelves so far.

  4. Looks like your son’s making some great progress on the shelving project. Amazing to think all that and it’s only 4 letters so far. I love the eyes of those phainopepla. We don’t see them out this way, so I envy you those. And glad to hear you eventually found a book that worked. I suppose Random Sh*t’s always good for that. 🙂

  5. Those photos are incredible – your husband is a talented photographer! And… your books! Oh my word… I thought we had a lot, but… oh my word… Sorry this week has been rocky, readingwise. There are times when I fall behind a bit on the arc front – and shrug my shoulders. It would be nice to get all the reviews out in a timely fashion – but as an author, I’m here to tell you that authors are just thankful for well written, informed reviews, anyway:)). I hope the coming week is more enjoyable and less stressful on the reading front, Tammy.

Thanks Sarah:-) It’s a particularly bad time for review books, I think because I went a bit crazy on NetGalley with ARCs these past few months.

  6. I did the double shelving, but now I’ve gone digital which is great for Harley riding or any kind of traveling, or moving. yes I hate it when I can’t read all the books I want or library books have to go back before I read them or finish them. (I do like the new feature where you can hold them again and stay at the top of the reserve list. ) You already know I really enjoyed Deal with the Devil as it was fun and didn’t require tons of deep thought. So many great choices – enjoy your reads!

    • Tammy

Thanks Anne, I’ve started Deal with the Devil and I can tell it will be a quick, fun read:-)

  7. Lisa

I also have a home library dedicated to physical books, I love my room. Anyway, due to space issues, I have 6 bookcases and stack my books horizontally instead of vertically, mine are also doubled and tripled stacked, I think it makes it easier to move when your looking for something behind the front shelves. I’m going to check out Libibi. Happy shelving!!

  8. Will

That is A LOT of books! Can I ask, how many duplicates were there? And have you read them all?

    • Tammy

Well, so far I have already run into duplicates, and the strange thing is, I have no idea why for some of them, lol. I have three copies of a book I don’t even remember buying. How sad is that??

    • Tammy

Yes, I probably will take photos when everything is done! If only to prove that for at least a short time, I was organized;-)

  9. I love your shelves and your husband’s pictures – and the fact that you’re only up to ‘D’ had registered – wow.
I also read Flyaway. It’s such an unusual tale and not what I was expecting. Something quite sinister lying beneath all the flowery prose and not altogether enjoyable characters but it did eventually pull me in.
    Lynn 😀

    • Tammy

It pulled me in too, but overall it didn’t work for me, unfortunately. I feel like I need to read it again and concentrate more.

  10. I think you might have more books than me lol. It looks like the organization is going well though! I also used libib for my cataloguing when I did my recent reorg at the end of last year.

You’re definitely not alone with the reading, I also did horrible last week. It happens!
