Hope everyone is well! As I write this, my son, who is home from college for the summer, is taking on the mammoth task of organizing and cataloging my entire home library. It’s a job I’ve been trying to get myself to do for years, but every time I think about it I feel overwhelmed. I don’t have enough bookshelves for all my books, so it’s kind of depressing trying to think how I’m going to organize them. And I may or may not purge some of these, I guess I’ll decide when I start the reshelving process. I will let you know when it’s all over and done! We’ve got stacks like the ones below in every room in the house… Meantime, let the sorting begin!
Hubby took some cool photos this week, so here are a few I love (click for larger images):
The first two photos are my beloved senior dogs, Otis and Ginger:-) And I love this bird photo, I swear he finds the coolest birds and animals on his excursions! Back at the L.A. River, he stumbled upon a heron skull, and took this eerie photo.

This week I’ll be posting reviews for Opium and Absinthe by Lydia Kang, and The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson. Both were very good in very different ways!

I just looked at the calendar and I can’t believe we’re heading into the last week of July next week! Ugh I still have SO many July releases to read. Clearly I won’t get to everything, but I’d love to finish off the month with these three books if possible. The rest will most likely be pushed into August. Hey, what can you do??

Book news:
Because last week was the bomb for new book announcements, I thought I’d share those here:
- Seanan McGuire to write the sequel to Middlegame! Seasonal Fears doesn’t come out until Spring of 2022, but that gives you plenty of time to catch up if you still haven’t read Middlegame.
- Daryl Gregory’s novella The Album of Dr. Moreau to be published by Tor.com in 2021! I feel like I’ve been waiting YEARS for a new Daryl Gregory book (since 2017’s Spoonbenders) and I couldn’t be happier that Tor.com will be publishing his next book:-D
- Sylvia Moreno-Garcia‘s Certain Dark Things is FINALLY coming back into print from Nightfire in May 2021! Apparantly, Certain Dark Things went out of print soon after publication, and I’m thrilled it’s getting a new paperback release. This is one horror novel that deserves a wider audience.

Yes, I understand your shelving problems, and I sympathize, but seeing so many books all together always brings a smile to my face – it’s something of a Pavlovian reaction… 😉

Certain Dark Things really deserves to. Those photos are always great. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a heron skull before!

Wow, look at all those books! Lucky lady (although the thought of organizing them doesn’t sound fun). Your husband takes the best photos. I absolutely love the heron skull pic.
That’s why I’m paying my son, lol. He’ll do anything for money!

Oh my Gosh Tammy!!! You have so many books!!! How many shelves really? And where do you have the room for all this? He will be busy his whole summer LOL
I don’t really have room for all of them?? And yet I keep getting more. I have a lot of stacks around the house, and even after the big organization, I’m sure I will still have some stacks!
Great photos! I love the stacks of books, makes me feel at home. I have 19 bookcases, all full, and I stick to digital now. Still I enjoyed organizing them with the move last summer. Have a lovely week! Stay safe and be kind.

I LOVE seeing all those books. I feel like you can never have too many, and yet I understand fully how they sometimes start taking over. I once tried organizing mine, but over the years that all fell apart and now I just try to shelve similar genres near each other. It’s really tough getting rid of them, though. Strangely, I even have a hard time getting rid of books I didn’t enjoy. As always, I love your husbands photos. Beautiful portraits of the dogs. And I think your red bird may be a house finch. The skull photo is fantastic! Of the reviews I’m most looking forward to The Year of the Witching. I just haven’t been able to figure out if it’s something I’d enjoy, but I love the cover.
I’m glad you feel that way too, Todd! My husband has been really patient with me over the years, as the books start to take over the house more and more:-)

I can’t actually believe how many books you are sorting! I am dreading the task when I bring all my books from my parent’s house! Maybe I should wait until my stepdaughter is old enough and have her help me!

Best of luck to your son, that is a huge task! It’s definitely overwhelming, and I feel your pain about a lack of shelves for them all. I have my books piled up in places and I almost feel bad for them that they don’t get a spot on shelves, haha! Your dogs are so sweet. 🙂 I’m excited about the Silvia Moreno-Garcia book, too!
Yep, the book organization is turning out to be WAY more work than either of us realized. Ha ha, glad it’s not me doing it!

Phew, that’s some serious bookage you’ve got there! Nice of your son to take on the monumental task, though. Hubby’s pictures are gorgeous! He’s got a good eye (and maybe a good camera? haha). And why do I fee like I’m totally being called out with the Middlegame thing? Man, I need to get to reading that book soon lol.
He definitely has a good camera:-) I think you’d love Middlegame, it’s definitely worth making time for, especially with the sequel on the horizon and also Over the Woodward Wall from Tor.com, which is related to the book:-)
