What’s On My Plate – July 2020

And 2020 is officially half over. I guess that’s something to be thankful for? Life is still weird and it’s almost like time has frozen since mid-March, except it hasn’t really. But I do love the beginning of the month, because I love to look ahead at the books I plan on reading. It’s also that time when you can imagine yourself reading ALL the books, and I love that feeling:-D And yes, there are FIFTEEN books on my July plate, and you guys know I can’t read that fast, lol. But I always give it my best shot! Here’s what I would like to tackle this month:

Starting off with The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson, one of my most highly anticipated July releases! This book is already getting rave reviews, and I’ll be reading it very soon.

Random Sht Flying Through the Air by Jackson Ford. I loved last year’s The Girl Who Could Move Sht With Her Mind, and I’m so ready to get back into Ford’s really fun world. In the last book he tackled the brush fires of California, and this time it’s earthquakes!

The Midnight Lullaby by Cheryl Low. First of all, I’m happy to see this up on Goodreads, it makes my life easier! This is actually novella length, and I can hardly wait to see what Cheryl does next:-D

Automatic Reload by Ferrett Steinmetz. Lots of great reviews already for this “cyber romance,” as the publisher is calling it. It sounds like a blast!

Afterland by Lauren Beukes. In a post-apocalyptic world where most of the men are dead, a mother is on the run, trying to save her son from all kinds of terrible people. Sounds fantastic!

Wonderland by Zoje Stage. Stage wrote a book called Baby Teeth last year that lots of people were talking about, so now I’m very curious to read her latest.

Every Sky a Grave by Jay Posey. Posey wrote a fantastic book called Three several years ago, but I never had time to finish that series. I’m hoping this is good!

Flyaway by Kathleen Jennings. I’ve had a copy of this for quite a while, and I’m glad it’s finally time to read this. The publisher is calling this “Australian Gothic.”

Unconquerable Sun by Kate Elliot. Gender swapped Alexander the Great! That’s an intriguing hook, and I’m hoping I can get to this. It will be my first Kate Elliot:-D

Opium and Absinthe by Lydia Kang. A Victorian murder mystery! This might be the only non SFF book on my list, and I am looking forward to something different.

Chaos Vector by Megan E. O’Keefe. I really wish I had a physical ARC to match my ARC of Velocity Weapon, but such is life during a pandemic, I guess. This should be a lot of fun!

The Sin in the Steel by Ryan Van Loan. This sounds like it has a LOT going on. The blurb mentions Sherlock Holmes, pirates and shape-shifting mages. Still, I’m intrigued!

Savage Legion by Matt Wallace. I haven’t read anything by Wallace since his series of Sin du Jour novellas, so I’m quite curious about this one.

Deal With the Devil by Kit Rocha. This sounds like a lot of fun, a post apocalyptic story with a romantic element.

Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler. This is getting some solid reviews on Goodreads, the start of a new epic fantasy series. Sounds really good:-D

I also wanted to share that The Fantasy Hive is hosting a cool event all month called #WomenInSFF, showcasing female SFF authors. As you can see from my TBR above, I have a whopping NINE female authors to read this month! You can join in the fun by sharing reviews or other features and using the #WomenInSFF hashtag on social media!

Here’s a recap of what I read and reviewed in June, if you missed any of my reviews. I don’t usually have this many three star reviews in one month, but I guess it was bound to happen. My favorite book of the month: The Only Good Indians.

The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

Corporate Gunslinger by Doug Engstrom

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Dragon Unleashed by Grace Draven

Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston

Hella by David Gerrold

Spectre Deep 6 by Jennifer Brody & Jules Rivera

We Ride the Storm by Devin Madson

  1. Great TBR choices!! I’m looking forward to hearing about The Year of the Witching and the Wexler book particularly – I haven’t read any of his stuff!

It always amazes me when I realize I’ve never read a popular SFF author. Wexler is one of those:-)

  2. The Captain

Your first Kate Elliott! Exciting. I keep forgetting about this new one. Can’t wait to hear what ye think. Arrrr!
    x The Captain

  3. WS_BOOKCLUB

I’m so jealous of people who are organized enough to plan their reading. Awesome list!

    • Tammy

Ha ha, well we’ll see how it goes by the end of the month. I won’t be able to read even half of these, probably, lol.

  4. The Year of the Witching sure seems a popular book. I didn’t take it for review for some reason. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts. I’m in the middle of Peace Talks by Jim Butcher. I’ve got a great set of reads coming up too. Happy reading!

I’m seeing The Year of the Witching everywhere! Yeah, July has some awesome books, it’s hard to go wrong:-)

  5. I’m crossing fingers and toes to see if I get an arc of the Kate Elliott book – and I’ve also got Afterland. You have a fairly hefty reading schedule for July – good luck, Tammy:)).

  6. Every time I see the cover for The Year of the Witching I’m more curious about it. It’s a very, very effective cover. Rigth now I’m just finishing up City of Stairs, and absolutely loving it. It’s towards the end with the action happening non-stop. I may try to finish the series with City of Miracles before July’s out. I can’t wait to see how many on your list you get through.

  7. Will

I still need to read Every Sky a Grave, though I doubt I’ll finish it before the release. You know I loved Automatic Reload, but Ashes of the Sun is amazing (so far) as well! I don’t actually have any of the others on my list for the month, but let me know if I need to read any of them, yeah? Good reading!

  8. LOL yeah 15 books is going to be a challenge but I bet you can get to most of them! I have a lot on my July plate as well, but I got 2 done so far (and so many more to go) 😀

  9. Good luck with your 15 books!!! And thanks for sharing the #WomeninSFF tag! I didn’t know about it but it sounds awesome 😀

  10. I also love that beginning of the month feeling! No matter how many of these books you end up reading, I’m pretty sure it looks like you’re going to have a great reading month! I’m really looking forward to The Year of the Witching, Flyaway, and Opium and Absinthe. I have an ARC of Afterland that I keep meaning to dive into as well. I hope you have a fantastic month of reading in July! 🙂
