Over-Booked [122] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

Today is an odd mix of purchases, surprise book mail, and lots of eARCs per usual, which seems to be the norm these days. This haul looks big, but keep in mind this is an entire month of new books.

Physical books for review:

I’ve actually had several publishers ask if I wanted physical review copies for a few upcoming releases, which I immediately said “yes” to, but as of writing this post, those books have yet to show up in the mail. I did receive a gorgeous finished copy of The Kingdom of Liars by Nick Martell from Saga Press. This book just came out last week, and because the end of the month is only a few days away, I’ll most likely squeeze this in next month. Thank you Gallery/Saga Press!

Digital books for review:

Yeah, I guess I went a little overboard with eARCs? It’s not my fault, seriously!

First up, two HIGHLY anticipated books, and I’m so happy I finally got approved for The Ghost Tree by Christina Henry. And as soon as The Factory Witches of Lowell by C.S. Malerich popped up, I grabbed it of course (I’m very lucky to have Tor auto-approval).

And then Orbit sent out their newsletter and dang it, I had to download two July sequels that I’m super excited about: Random Sh*t Flying Through the Air by Jackson Ford and Chaos Vector by Megan E. O’Keefe.

And then a nice publicist at Tor sent me a reminder to please read Automatic Reload by Ferrett Steinmetz, and who am I to argue with a publicist??

I think I mentioned in my Future Fiction post that I immediately went to the Grinning Skull Press website to request The Midnight Lullaby by Cheryl Low. Horror lovers out there, you need to check out her books! (still not on Goodreads. GSP please add it soon!)

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini was another Tor download, and I hope I did the right thing because I just realized this book is LONG.

Thanks so my contact at Penguin for a widget for Seven Devils by Laura Lam and Elizabeth May, two authors I love coming together in one book? Yes I will read that!

And from a lovely Simon & Schuster publicist, I was invited to read These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong, which sounds amazing!

When I saw the cover of Yellow Jessamine by Caitlin Starling, I just had to request it. I wasn’t a big fan of Starling’s last book, The Luminous Dead, although lots of readers loved it. I want to give her another try, though, and this sounds really good. Plus, novella so it’s short and will be easy to fit in:-D

My contact at Kaye Publicity offered me Twin Daggers by MarcyKate Connolly. This is a fantasy retelling of Romeo and Juliet, and sounds like it could be good!

The House of Whispers by Laura Purcell was a spur-of-the-moment download on Edelweiss after reading Mogsy’s review. I couldn’t help myself!

The last two books are horror requests from NetGalley, and I’m thankful to be approved for The Nesting by C.J. Cooke and Voodoo Heart by John Everson.

Big thanks to all the publishers: Tor Books, Tor.com, Berkley Books, Orbit, Grinning Skull Press, DAW Books, Margaret K. McElderry Books, Neon Hemlock Press, Blink, Penguin Books, HarperCollins, and Flame Tree Press.

Purchases/Surprises?

First off, a curious package I received a few weeks ago. Inside were two books and an intriguing card game called Superfight. The books: The Walking Dead Compendium One, a massive paperback that collects The Walking Dead graphic novels issues 1-48. This thing must weigh ten pounds! Next, Across the Void by S.K. Vaughn, a book that I believe is already on my TBR and sounds fantastic. And then, a card game called Superfight which sounds pretty fun! Also, an extra deck of cards to go along with it, The Sci-Fi Deck. Now, I hate to let a good mystery go unsolved, but I’m stumped. There was no note included with this package, and after spending a good deal of time trying to track down information on the return address, I finally gave up. I suppose I could have entered a giveaway at some point and completely forgotten about it? Hmmm. So my heartfelt thanks to whoever sent me this awesome surprise!

Next, a couple of limited edition pre-orders arrived. From Subterranean Press, this lovely edition of Gideon the Ninth by Tamsin Muir! I honestly forgot I ordered this, it must have been months ago, lol. So it was a big surprise. I also got the Goldsboro special edition of Aurora Burning by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. This copy has bright orange sprayed edges, which my crappy camera phone just didn’t capture, but trust me, it’s pretty!

And that’s my latest book haul. Are you planning to read any of these books?

  1. Marian Parsons

Totally ready for Random Sh*t. Also, I will be interested to hear more about The Kingdom of Liars.

  2. You have an amazing variety of books here. I’d definitely be interested to see what you think of The House Of Whispers. Have you read any of the authors other books before?

  3. These Violent Delights, Yellow Jessamine, and Twin Daggers sounds great. I’m adding them to my tbr right now! That cover for Gideon the Ninth looks so cool too. Happy reading!

  4. Wow, so 2 retellings of Romeo and Juliet this time around, These Violent Delights and Twin Daggers. Pretty cool. And awesome cover on Gideon the Ninth.

My photo doesn’t do it justice, but the Gideon the Ninth is quite beautiful. And it’s got illustrated end papers which I didn’t take a photo of.

  5. I also have an arc of Seven Devils and am very much looking forward to this one. It was seeing Elizabeth May’s name on the cover that prompted me to get hold of this one – I LOVED her Falconer series! And I’m very intrigued by The Factory Witches of Lowell – I hope you love this haul, Tammy:))

Me too, I loved The Falconer series! Very curious to see her and Laura Lam writing together.

  6. Will

Still need to read Kingdom of Liars. Ach, I’m behind! And you already know I loved Automatic Reload, but the rest are new to me! That’s still a pretty good haul for a month, you have your work cut out for you!

  7. I’ve been pretty excited to see publishers offering physical copies again, hopefully things are slowly returning to the way they are. That said, I was pretty surprised to receive Kingdom of Liars as well! I’m also trying to hold back on requesting too much on NetGalley, but I have a feeling I’ll cave soon to The Nesting and The Ghost Tree 😛

I’m trying to remember if Saga offered us physical copies of Kingdom of Liars, but I don’t think they did. I know Tor has been asking, but I still think it will be a while, maybe Fall, before we really see a big change.

  8. OMG, that version of Gideon the Ninth! I’m in love. <3 So many good books on this list that I'm also interested in, so I can't wait to see what you think. I also got Random Sh*t Flying Through the Air! I actually just started it this morning, and I'm already loving it. I mean, I love Teagan as much as always, but the opening premise has already grabbed my attention, and I can't wait to get some time to really dig into it.

  9. Omg, I somehow missed that The Ghost Tree was available on NetGalley–I’m so excited for that one! I think I will have to look into Cheryl Low, also. I also missed that Laura Purcell has *another* book coming out?? It’s so hard to keep up these days, haha. I never read Gideon the Ninth, but when I saw those SubPress editions I just thought they were so gorgeous.
These all look amazing–I hope you enjoy reading all of them! 🙂

  10. Ooooh Subterranean makes the prettiest editions. I want to be able to get one someday. The new Alix E. Harrow one will be tempting. 😀
I am really curious about the factory witches book—looking forward to your thoughts on that one!
