Future Fiction #71 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

This week, not one but TWO Tor.com cover reveals, and another cover reveal for the new book of one of my favorite authors!

Bram Stoker Award-nominated author Craig DiLouie brings a new twist to the cult horror story in a heart-pounding novel of psychological suspense.

David Young, Deacon Price, and Beth Harris live with a dark secret. As children, they survived a religious group’s horrific last days at the isolated mountain Red Peak. Years later, the trauma of what they experienced never feels far behind.

When a fellow survivor commits suicide, they finally reunite and share their stories. Long-repressed memories surface, defying understanding and belief. Why did their families go down such a dark road? What really happened on that final night?

The answers lie buried at Red Peak. But truth has a price, and escaping a second time may demand the ultimate sacrifice.

The Children of Red Peak by Craig DiLouie. Releases in November 2020 from Redhook. I seriously want to jump up and down and scream about this book! I absolutely love DiLouie’s stories, and his latest is bound to be just as emotional and powerful as his other books. And I love this thoroughly creepy cover…

The Fellowship raised Lark to kill monsters.
His partner betrayed them to the Feds.
But Lark knows his magic is real, and he’ll do anything to complete his quest.

K. M. Szpara follows Docile, one of the most anticipated science fiction novels of 2020, with First, Become Ashes, a fantastic standalone adventure that blends pain and pleasure and will make readers question what is real, and what is magical.

Lark spent the first twenty-four years, nine months, and three days of his life training for a righteous quest: to rid the world of monsters. Alongside his partner Kane, he wore the cage and endured the scourge in order to develop his innate magic. He never thought that when Kane left, he’d next see him in the company of FBI agents and a SWAT team. He never dreamed that the leader of the Fellowship of the Anointed would be brought up on charges of abuse and assault.

He never expected the government would tell him that the monsters aren’t real–that there is no magic, and all the pain was for nothing.

Lark isn’t ready to give up. He is determined to fulfill his quest, to defeat the monsters he was promised. Along the way he will grapple with the past, confront love, and discover his long-buried truth.

First, Become Ashes by K.M. Szpara. Releases in April 2021 from Tor.com. I know what you’re thinking. Well, I actually know two things you might be thinking. 1) April 2021, seriously?? and 2) But Tammy, you really didn’t like Szpara’s last book. Why do you want to read this one? Well, I never write off an author just because one book didn’t work for me. And look at this cover! Plus, this story sounds crazy and pretty good:-)

Daniel Polansky returns with The Seventh Perfection, an innovative, mind-bending fantasy mystery

When a woman with perfect memory sets out to solve a riddle, the threads she tugs on could bring a whole city crashing down. The God-King who made her is at risk, and his other servants will do anything to stop her.

To become the God-King’s Amanuensis, Manet had to master all seven perfections, developing her body and mind to the peak of human performance. She remembers everything that has happened to her, in absolute clarity, a gift that will surely drive her mad. But before she goes, Manet must unravel a secret which threatens not only the carefully prepared myths of the God-King’s ascent, but her own identity and the nature of truth itself.

The Seventh Perfection by Daniel Polansky. Releases in September 2020 from Tor.com. First of all, please look at this glorious cover! And second, it’s Daniel Polansky, who wrote one of my favorite novellas, The Builders. I’m super excited to read more of his work.

  1. It may sound weird to say about a book that’s sounds terrifying but The Children of Red Peak also sounds really awesome! The synopsis of First, Become Ashes made me go WHAT?! so now I want to read that one too (what are you doing to meeee). And of course The Seventh Perfection sounds amazing as well. Also desperately need that cover in my possession! ♥

I’m definitely drawn to the whole cult storyline, oddly enough! Can’t wait for all three:-)

  2. Will

I’ve only read Low Town by Polansky, but Those Above has been on my TBR for a while. Seventh Perfection sounds pretty good, but I dunno… how did the Builders compare to his other stuff?

    • Tammy

The Builders is the only Polansky I’ve read so I can’t compare. I’m anxious to read Low Town too!

  3. I absolutely love the cover for The Children of Red Peak (the others are also strong). That alone got my attention. But all three books seem to have promise, and I’ve yet to try anything by these authors, so I’d be up for any or all three.

I am drawn to covers that are “upside down” for some reason, and The Children of Red Peak wins for that reason:-)

I’m fascinated by cults, for some reason. Probably because I remember the Manson murders and I had a weird fascination with them, lol.

The Seventh Perfection is the most intriguing to me, both cover and synopsis. I like the cover for The Children of Red Peak too, but I usually bounce off that kind of story.

Craig DiLouie doesn’t pull any punches, that’s for sure. His books are real emotional experiences:-)

  5. I love the cover of The Seventh Perfection – I have The Builders on my TBR – which I’ve now bumped up MUCH nearer the top! As ever, a great set of books, Tammy – enjoy!

    • Tammy

I just loved The Builders but maybe because the characters are talking animals:-)

  6. These all sound great but I’m probably most interested in The Children of Red Peak. I always give authors second chances, and sometimes third to be honest. I’ve found some of my faves that way!

    • Tammy

I agree, you just never know if one book was a fluke, that author could always surprise you:-)

    • Tammy

Me too, Stormi! It’s hard not to be excited for a new book from one of my favorite authors.

  7. Up to now I’ve been on the fence about trying DiLouie because I guess the synopses of his books haven’t really grabbed me, but that’s definitely changed with this one.. I’m definitely on board for a psychological suspense!

    • Tammy

His books are so different from each other, so it’s hard to predict what he’s going to do next! I’m excited he’s taking on cults!
