Future Fiction #64: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

We’re all stuck at home, so let’s do what we book lovers do best: add more books to our TBRs!

A horrific crime that defies ordinary explanation. A rookie FBI agent in dangerous, uncharted territory. An extraordinary hero for the ages. Odessa Hardwicke’s life is derailed when she’s forced to turn her gun on her partner, Walt Leppo, a decorated FBI agent who turns suddenly, inexplicably violent while apprehending a rampaging murderer. The shooting, justified by self-defense, shakes the young FBI agent to her core. Devasted, Odessa is placed on desk leave pending a full investigation. But what most troubles Odessa isn’t the tragedy itself-it’s the shadowy presence she thought she saw fleeing the deceased agent’s body after his death. Questioning her future with the FBI and her sanity, Hardwicke accepts a low-level assignment to clear out the belongings of a retired agent in the New York office. What she finds there will put her on the trail of a mysterious figure named John Silence, a man of enormous means who claims to have been alive for centuries, and who is either an unhinged lunatic, or humanity’s best and only defense against unspeakable evil.

The Hollow Ones by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan. Releases in June 2020 from Grand Central Publishing. I have yet to read anything by Guillermo del Toro, which is very sad, so I’m going to try to read this for sure. It sounds really good!

Caught up in a space station turf war between gangs and corrupt law, a lone asteroid miner decides to take them all down.

When an asteroid miner comes to Station 35 looking to sell her cargo and get back to the solitude she craves, she gets swept up in a three-way standoff with gangs and crooked cops. Faced with either taking sides or cleaning out the Augean Stables, she breaks out the flamethrower.

Red Noise by John P. Murphy. Releases in June 2020 from Angry Robot. I was just offered a review copy of this book, and because it was new to me, I thought I’d feature it today. I love the sound of a female asteroid miner with a flamethrower!

A compelling debut by a new voice in fantasy fiction, The Conductors features the magic and mystery of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files written with the sensibility and historical setting of Octavia Butler’s Kindred: Introducing Hetty Rhodes, a magic-user and former conductor on the Underground Railroad who now solves crimes in post–Civil War Philadelphia.

As a conductor on the Underground Railroad, Hetty Rhodes helped usher dozens of people north with her wits and magic. Now that the Civil War is over, Hetty and her husband Benjy have settled in Philadelphia, solving murders and mysteries that the white authorities won’t touch. When they find one of their friends slain in an alley, Hetty and Benjy bury the body and set off to find answers. But the secrets and intricate lies of the elites of Black Philadelphia only serve to dredge up more questions. To solve this mystery, they will have to face ugly truths all around them, including the ones about each other.

In this vibrant and original novel, Nicole Glover joins a roster of contemporary writers within fantasy, such as Victor LaValle and Zen Cho, who use speculative fiction to delve into important historical and cultural threads.

The Conductors by Nicole Glover. Releases in November 2020 from John Joseph Adams/Mariner Books. Comparing Jim Butcher and Octavia Butler to a debut author means she’s got some big shoes to fill, but I still love the idea of a fantasy revolving around the Underground Railroad.

  1. Heck, just sign me up for all three today (although technically the first one is already on my wishlist). And I want a flamethrower!!!! I have a few people I’d like to throw flames at 🙂 Of all three The Conductor is probably my favorite for some reason and I can’t really pinpoint why. Hope you’re doing well and like you said, let’s all add some books!

  2. Sarah

All of these sound perfect! I have read the Hogan / Del Toro team up The Strain.. and enjoyed it very much. I listened to it on audio actually – so when I listen and finish and enjoy that’s usually a very good sign. I still need to read the rest of that trilogy- but The Hollow Ones sounds awesome too!

The Angry Robot one just sounds like pure mayhem which I love, and The Conductors sounds like a wonderful alternate history fantasy sort of book.

  3. I absolutely love most of the movies I’ve seen by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth is a favorite), and I enjoyed the first season or two of The Strain, which was based on their novels. But I’ve not read anything yet by the duo. And I think The Conductors sounds very promising.

  4. Guillermo del Toro writes books?! I’m kind of surprised by this. Maybe I shouldn’t be … but I am? Huh. I guess I just didn’t realize. I love his films, so I think I’ll definitely have to check out his books. Oooh, The Conductors sounds FABULOUS. That one’s going directly on the TBR. XD
