Waiting on Wednesday (55) UNHINGED by A. G. Howard

Waiting on Wednesday copy

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine! Boy, am I excited about this WoW pick…well, I guess I’m excited about all my WoW picks, but the cover for Unhinged was just revealed, and I’m super excited about it! As you may know, Unhinged is the follow-up to Anita’s Splintered, which came out this past January. I’m thrilled that my very favorite character Morpheus is on the cover! Take a look at this:

Unhinged

Unhinged by A. G. Howard (Splintered #2). Release date: January 2014 (Amulet). I loved Splintered, in fact it still tops the list of the best books I’ve read so far this year. Here’s what it’s about:

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she’s always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she’ll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

The trailer for Unhinged was just revealed as well, so I’m posting it here, too! Now you really want to read this book, am I right??

What are you waiting on this week?

Stacking the Shelves (20)

Stacking the ShelvesStacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews, and is a way to share the books you’ve acquired over the past week or so with other bloggers. Since I received an Amazon gift card for Christmas, I used some of it this week to buy some books I’ve been lusting after…and I got some other things as well.

For Review:

StungHow Beauty Saved the Beast

Stung by Bethany Wiggins. Release date: April 2 2013 (Walker Children’s). This sounds like part science fiction, part horror. I love the simplicity of the cover!

How Beauty Saved the Beast by Jax Garren. Release date: February 11 2013 (Carina Press). I loved Garren’s first book in the series, How Beauty Met the Beast, and I’m anxious for more of these fantastic characters.

For Review & Giveaway:

Insomnia

Insomnia by J. R. Johansson. Release date: June 8 2013 (Flux). I’m super excited that the author was kind enough to send me an ARC after I babbled on and on about how much I wanted to read her book! (I think she took pity on me…) In any case, she agreed to send me a copy provided I give it away after I read it. That’s right, folks! I’ll be giving away a signed ARC very soon…stay tuned!

For Blog Tours:

The Devil's TriangleSilencing Breath

The Devil’s Triangle by Toni De Palma. Release date: February 2013 (Crescent Moon Press). I’ve read several titles from this small publisher, and I’m looking forward to reading this one as well.

Silencing Breath by Joanne Brothwell. Release date: February 2013. I read and reviewed Joanne’s first book in the series, Stealing Breath, and was happy when she asked me to read Book #2.

Purchased:

Scarlet2The Darkest MindsShadow and BoneEtiquette and EspionageSplintered

I’ve been dying to read all these books (except for Splintered, which I’ve already read), and I’ve read rave reviews on all of them. As far as Splintered, I read an e-ARC from the publisher, but I loved it so much I wanted my very own copy. And believe me, as lovely as the cover is, this photo doesn’t do the real book justice. The physical copy is stunning!

What’s on your shelves this week?

For Review from Publisher:

Between Two ThornsBlack Feathers

Between Two Thorns by Emma Newman. Release date: February 26 2013 (Angry Robot). This fantasy is the first in a series and takes place in Bath, England’s secret Mirror City. If you look closely you can see gargoyles on the cover of this book, which immediately makes me want to read it.

Black Feathers by Joseph D’Lacey. Release date: March 26 2013 (Angry Robot). Another first in a series, this fantasy sounds so good, plus Stephen King really likes this guy, according to the blurb on the front. Hey, that’s good enough for me! Many thanks to Angry Robot for these two books.

Won:

From the lovely A. G. Howard, author of Splintered, I got very lucky and won a bunch of stuff from her giveaway, including an amazing glowing jar and three antique chess pieces! I was also lucky enough to win ARCs of In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters (Release date: April 2 2013, Amulet Books) and The Shadow Girl by Jennifer Archer (Release date: April 9 2013, Harper Teen). I also won Bruised by Sarah Skilton, which I mentioned in my last StS.  Thank you so much Anita!!

Stacking the ShelvesStacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews, and is a fun way to share the books you’ve acquired over the past week. I’m starting off the year without a single new book purchase! I only received a few books, but they are really good ones. (You can click on the book cover images to go to Goodreads.)

For Review from Edelweiss/Publisher:

RevengeThe Murmurings

Revenge by Yoko Ogawa. Release date: January 29 2013 (Picador). This book of dark short stories has been given a blurb (on the front cover, no less) by Joe Hill. That alone makes me want to devour it! (OK, I just noticed that the photo above actually has a blurb by Hilary Mantel on the front, but I swear my copy has a Joe Hill blurb. Weird.)

The Murmurings by Carly Anne West. Release date: March 5 2013 (Simon Pulse). I love the dark cover of this book, and it seems perfect for the dark and creepy mystery that lies within…

Indie book for Review:

A Shade of Vampire

A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest. Now available. This sounds like an actual scary vampire tale, with very little romance or humor, at least that’s what I get from the Goodreads description. This is the last of my indie books that I’ve accepted until I catch up.

Won:

Bruised

Bruised by Sarah Skilton. Release date: March 5 2013 (Amulet/Abrams). I’m so excited! I recently won this (and another ARC, but for the life of me I can’t remember what it is!) from A. G. Howard’s huge giveaway to celebrate the release of Splintered. I tweeted Sarah when the book arrived and she is so nice! Plus, I got lucky and won some other cool prizes from Anita that will be arriving soon…

That’s it for me, folks! Looks like I’m going to be busy…Please let me know what you got this week:)

Bad Boy Rehab Hop – Win a Copy of SPLINTERED!

Bad Boy HopWelcome to the Bad Boy Rehab Hop hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer & The Book Hookup. There are almost 100 blogs participating in this hop, and each one is giving away something different. You can hop from blog to blog and enter each giveaway! We all love our bad boys, right? There are so many deliciously bad-on-the-outside-yet-mysterious-and-complex-on-the-inside boys in YA fiction these days, that it was hard to choose one for this giveaway hop. But actually for me, it wasn’t that hard, because I recently read a fantastic book with one such bad boy, and I’m giving away a copy of that book right here:

Splintered

Here’s the description from Goodreads:

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now. When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

And here is the Bad Boy of Splintered, Morpheus:

Morpheus

Morpheus is the type of character that you know you shouldn’t be drawn to, but you are anyway. I adored this book (you can read my review of Splintered here) and I’m betting you will, too. I have one hardcover copy of Splintered to giveaway to one lucky winner (U.S. only)! Splintered has just been published, and I’m telling you, this book is gonna be big!  CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE RAFFLECOPTER AND ENTER TO WIN!

What’s On My Plate – January 2013

On My PlateCan you believe it’s 2013?? I can’t. But I’m ready to start fresh, get über-organized and kick butt when it comes to my reading lists! I have to apologize big time to the indie authors who have been patiently waiting for me to get to their books. I failed miserably in December with my schedule…I’ll have to remember next December that I need to plan on reading about half of what I’d normally read. The month is just too busy, and unfortunately I made too many promises. So, sorry indie writers! I had planned on reading three indie books last month and didn’t get to any of them:( So they will be pushed to this month, if I have time. I’ve got a pretty loaded plate with NetGalley and Edelweiss ARCs for January, and they just have to come first. So here’s what I’m attempting to read (click on the covers to go to Goodreads):

For Review:

BrokenMadmans jkt Des1.inddMad Scientist's DaughterSix-Gun TarotHysteriaThe Best of all Possible WorldsSpeaking From Among the BonesAsher's Dilemma

Yes, that’s eight books from Edelweiss and NetGalley! And I’m pretty excited about all of them. Wish me luck:)

Blog Tours & Giveaway Hops:

Oxford front copy

Oxford Whispers Blog Tour, Review & Giveaway. My tour stop is on January 28th and I believe there will be some kind of giveaway.

YA Fairies HopBad Boy Hopback to the future hop

Wow, I went a little crazy with Giveaway Hops this month! Kinda like I went a little crazy with book requests…oh well! The first one is closed, but the other two hops are still open (as I write this), so if you want to join in the fun, just click on the images above to find out more.  Blog Hops are fun and pretty easy. I just have to come up with a good giveaway book for each one. I already know for the Bad Boy Rehab Hop (what a crazy name, right?) I’m going to be giving away a copy of a recent read that I gave five stars to, a book with a really bad boy that I absolutely loved: Splintered by A. G. Howard, and the bad boy is Morpheus:)  So make sure to stop by next week if you want to enter!

Time permitting, I will try to start catching up on my indie books. Maybe for dessert…

SPLINTERED by A. G. Howard – Review + Giveaway

SplinteredSplintered by A. G. Howard

Genre: YA Fantasy

Publisher: Amulet Books

Release Date: January 1 2013

Pages: 384

five stars

What if Wonderland was real, and Lewis Carroll’s story was only a skewed version of the truth? Imagine a more twisted and terrifyingly strange Wonderland than the one we are familiar with and you will have an inkling of what’s in store for you between the pages of Splintered. I honestly couldn’t have chosen a more wonderful book to end the year with (or begin the new year, if you want to look at it that way, since Splintered hits stores on January 1st).  From beginning to end I was enthralled, enchanted and in awe of the magical and frightening world that Howard has put to paper. The modern spin makes it even more appealing, and I have to say I even loved the love triangle!

Alyssa is descended from the original “Alice,” Alice Liddell, the girl who inspired Lewis Carroll to write Alice in Wonderland, a fact she feels very uncomfortable about and tries to hide. And she’s got good reason. Her mother, Alison, is mad and has been living in an asylum for most of Alyssa’s life, due to a terrible event from her childhood that she can barely remember. And just like Alison, Alyssa can hear the whispers of bugs and flowers, proof that she herself is going crazy, just like her mother. But on a visit to the asylum one day, Alyssa gets some very important clues to her past from her crazed mother, and thus begins her adventure. Accompanied by her secret crush and good friend Jeb, Alyssa is beckoned into Wonderland through a mirror by a mysterious boy from her past, a boy who tells her that the only way she can get back home is to help him fix the mistakes that Alice made when she visited Wonderland many years ago. What follows is a wild and circuitous path through a Wonderland far more dark and dangerous than even Carroll could imagine.

And yes, there is a love triangle, but honestly, it’s a good one. Jeb is the boy who Alyssa is secretly crushing over, a boy she’s been good friends with ever since she can remember. He and Alyssa both hang out at the town’s underground skate park, Underland, which is one of those modern twists that I love so much. But when Jeb is thrust into Wonderland, he seems to be a fish out of water, a fact that makes him even more human and likable. Morpheus is Alyssa’s childhood pal from Wonderland, a creature with wings who can turn himself into a moth, a boy who has grown into a very sexy man who Alyssa has a hard time resisting. I loved the parts where Jeb and Morpheus fight over Alyssa, and I especially loved that Alyssa is torn between the two, almost as if she needs both Jeb’s lightness and Morpheus’ darkness to feel complete. Alyssa describes Morpheus like this:

“He’s a contradiction: taut magic coiled to strike, gentleness at war with severity, a tongue as sharp as a whip’s edge, yet skin so soft he could be swathed in clouds.”

And later in the story when they inevitably kiss, Alyssa has this reaction:

“His lips are salty-sweet with yesterday’s laughter…”

(For some strange reason I kept imagining Morpheus as Q from Star Trek. Their speech patterns were so similar that John de Lancie’s voice popped into my head every time he spoke!)

Alyssa herself is a wonderful character, a girl who doesn’t want to admit that she might be going crazy. She stays true to her desire to save her mother, even with all the craziness of Wonderland trying to throw her off course. She’s quite a quirky character and creates beautiful mosaics with dead bugs and flowers, which is her way of trying to block out the voices she hears. When she gets to Wonderland, memories from her past start to return, and Howard brilliantly drops these memories into the story in just the right places, slowly revealing the truth about her past with Morpheus. And as for the two boys, well, you’ll just have to see for yourself how that turns out.

Although this Wonderland is slightly off-center from the one you may be familiar with, the story is populated with many familiar, if distorted, characters. The White Rabbit is really named “Rabid White,” the Mad Hatter appears as Herman Hattington, and the Cheshire Cat is also in the story, but weirdly enough, has lost his head and is trying to get it back. Howard also uses certain recurring themes throughout, my favorite being the appearance of roses, alluding to the rose bushes in the Queen’s gardens from the original story. Every detail is carefully plotted and every word perfectly chosen to bring this version of Wonderland to life. Howard’s writing is truly exquisite and her dialog is beautifully timed. She’s either an extremely gifted writer, or she has an amazing editor (although I suspect the truth is some of both!). Here’s an example of her whip-smart dialog, when Alice meets Humpty Dumpty (or Humphrey as he’s actually called):

“What glory is there to be had in bettering an egg, hmm? Will you make of me a soufflé or perhaps have me coddled?”

“Coddled?” I ask, confused. “You mean like a parent coddles a child?”

He wriggles in the chair until his short legs almost dangle over the edge, causing the new cracks to stretch farther yet. “Coddled in water, you speck. Cooked just below boiling until my brains are scrambled. What sort of empty-headed rot are you? Do you not have a proper vocabulary? And why are you even here? Don’t see any cracks in your shell.”

There are marvels galore to be discovered in Splintered, and strangeness around every corner. The true beauty of this book is that it isn’t a rehash of Alice in Wonderland at all, but a unique story that perhaps explains some of Alice’s mysteries. According to A. G. Howard, of course.

Many thanks to the publisher for supplying a review copy.

The author is hosting a fantastic giveaway, and just like the twists and turns of Splintered, this giveaway has twists of its own. Click here to get started, because there are tons of cool prizes you can win, if only you can find your way through the labyrinth of blogs that are hiding secret prizes! You can also click here for more giveaway opportunities. But hurry, because these giveaways end soon…

What’s On My Plate – December 2012

On My PlateWow, November turned out to be busier than I expected. Which means I fell behind in my reading and reviewing, unfortunately. I am sorry to report that although I started NaNoWriMo and wrote 9,000 words in the first week, I realized that it would be almost impossible to keep up the pace with so much going on in my non-blogging life, and so I threw in the towel. Darn! However, I’m very happy and proud to report that my thirteen-year-old son Duncan participated in the NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program and completed his novel of 30,000 words!! It was one of those Proud Mom Moments when he showed me his winner’s badge:)

So, it’s on to December! And here we are, four days into the month already! Here’s what I hope to accomplish this month (click on covers to go to Goodreads):

For Review:

Merchant of DreamsSplinteredBrokenThe Miniature Wife

The Merchant of Dreams by Anne Lyle. Release date: December 18 2012 (Angry Robot). This fantasy is the second in a series, and although I have not read The Alchemist of Souls, I’m very much looking forward to reading this.

Splintered by A. G. Howard. Release date: January 1 2013 (Amulet Books). Finally! I’ve had the NetGalley ARC for a while, and it’s finally time to read it!

The Miniature Wife and Other Stories by Manuel Gonzales. Release date: January 10 2013. Won from Library Thing. I’ve already started reading these stories, and they are amazing. I can’t wait to post my review!

Indie Books for Review:

Tears of Min BrockFighting the StormRift Healer

Tears of Min Brock by J. E. Lowder. There are lots of really good reviews of this book on Goodreads, which is one of the ways I decide whether or not to read an Indie book.

Fighting the Storm by Jarrah Loh. This is a bit out of my comfort zone, and not the sort of book I usually read. But the author’s email convinced me to give it a try.

Rift Healer by Diane M. Haynes. This is from small publisher Crescent Moon Press and is another book that has great reviews on Goodreads.  Can’t wait to read it!

Special Review & Giveaway:

Touching the Surface

Touching the Surface by Kimberly Sabatini. I was hoping to read and review Kimberly’s book by the release date (October 30) but obviously that didn’t happen! Oh well, better late than never. Kimberly was kind enough to send me some signed *swag* including bookplates, postcards, rubber bracelets and some adorable origami cranes (!) to help her promote Touching the Surface, and in addition to giving away the swag, I purchased an extra copy of the book to give away as well. Stay tuned, review and giveaway coming soon!

Blog Tours and Hops:

Embrace2end of world button

Embrace by Cherie Colyer. I’ll be reviewing and participating in Cherie’s Blog Tour. I actually won a signed copy of Embrace months ago, and now I will have the opportunity to read it! My tour date is next Monday December 10.

End of the World Giveaway Hop hosted by I Am A Reader, Not a Writer & My Life With Books. I just discovered giveaway hops, and they are a lot of fun! I haven’t decided what to give away for this one, but it will be good:) It runs from December 14-21, when the world will hopefully still be around.

Don’t forget to check out my 2013 Catch Up Reading Challenge! I’ll have a giveaway for every ten people who sign up! Click below for more info:

In addition to these, I have two indie books that I’ve read but haven’t reviewed yet. Apologies to those authors, but both reviews will be posted by the end of the week. Such a busy month, and the holidays are upon us as well! Here’s hoping that the world doesn’t end, and I can finish everything my plate:)

Tammy’s Top Ten Most Anticipated Books for 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. I’ve been waiting so patiently for this week’s Top Ten! From now until the end of the year are some of my favorite Top Ten themes. In fact, I’ve been working hard (reading) all year to bring you these lists, as have most other book bloggers. So here we go…these are my Top Ten most anticipated books that will be released in 2013—at least the ones I know about, and the ones that already have book covers. There are several that could have made this list, except the cover designs have not yet been revealed, and since the visual impact of a book is important to me, I don’t want to show you any blank covers.  These are listed in order of release date.

1. Splintered by A. G. Howard. Release date: January 1 2013. Technically I will be reading this in December, in order to have a review up before the release date, but technically it is a 2013 book, so I feel like I can include it here. I’ve read really good reviews of Splintered, and I can’t wait to read it myself. This re-imagined Alice in Wonderland is far closer to the original than Alice in Zombieland which came out earlier this year, from what I’ve heard, so if you’re looking for a good Alice story, this could be the one.

2. The Archived by Victoria Schwab. Release date: January 22 2013. This story is about a girl who keeps watch over the dead, who sit on shelves like books and are violent if awakened. I’ve been waiting forever to read this, and the wait is nearly over! This is another book that’s already received some great reviews. To promote her book, Victoria has been recording her own “histories” on YouTube for the past few months, you should check it out if you have time.

3. The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd. Release date: January 29 2013. This book has my name written all over it! Based on the story The Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. Wells, it tells the story of Dr. Moreau’s daughter Juliet, who discovers her father’s terrible scientific experiments with animals when she journeys to the island to find him. It sounds like a mix of science fiction and horror, and it’s set in the same time period as the original story, 1894.

4. Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. Release date: February 5 2013. Yea, it’s coming out on my birthday! Happy birthday to me:) Scarlet, in case anyone has been hiding under a rock, is the second book, after Cinder, in Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles. (There will be four books in the series.) According to some reviews I’ve read, it picks up right where Cinder left off and continues her story, but introduces us to new characters as well.

5. Let the Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger. Release date: March 5 2013. Wow, this sounds great. It’s about a girl who can walk on the wind and can control it as well. She’s sworn to protect a boy named Vane, who survived a category five tornado which killed his family. It sounds romantic, dangerous, and magical. I can’t wait to read it!

6. In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters. Release date: April 2 2013. I recently chose this as a Waiting on Wednesday (last week in fact!) and it’s true: it is one of the books I’m super excited to read. It takes place in 1908 during the Spanish Influenza epidemic, where a girl named Mary, who doesn’t believe in ghosts, is haunted by the ghost of a boy who died in battle.

7. NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. Release date: April 30 2013. Joe Hill is one of my top favorite horror writers, and I’m so pleased he has a new book coming out soon. It’s about a girl named Victoria who escapes a place called “Christmasland” after being kidnapped by a bad guy named Charlie. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, and you can bet whatever Hill has in store for his characters, it won’t be pleasant…

8. Invisibility by Andrea Cremer & David Levithan.  Release date: May 7 2013. A story about an invisibly boy? Are you kidding me?? Stephen has been invisible almost his entire life, ever since his grandfather cursed Stephen’s mother. He is surprised to meet someone who can actually see him, a girl named Elizabeth. Can they break the curse? Will they fall in love? Let’s all read it and find out…and don’t you love the cover?

9. Joyland by Stephen King. Release date: June 4 2013. This is one of those instances where I wanted to list King’s other book that’s coming out next year, the sequel to The Shining, Dr. Sleep. Alas, there is no cover art to show you yet, so I had to cross it off the list. But I can’t wait to read Joyland, which comes out exclusively in mass market paperback, and takes place at a carnival.

10. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke. Release date: August 15 2013. Between the title of the book and the author’s name, it’s quite a mouthful, but beneath this gorgeous and Gothic-looking cover lies a terrifying tale of a boy who just might be the devil, and the girl who’s falling for him.

I just realized this list is made up of mostly YA titles.  I didn’t plan it that way, I guess it just goes to show that young adult authors are writing some of the best fiction out there. I’d love to read your top ten list, please leave me your link!
