Most Anticipated Books of 2021 – Second Quarter

It’s already the second quarter of 2021, and I have another batch of exciting new SFF books coming out, this time for the months of April, May and June! As usual, I will highlight my top five books for each month, and at the end, I’ll show you how I did last quarter. It’s always so hard to pick just five, and obviously I will be reading other books as well, but these are the books that are “must reads” for me. Let’s get started!

April 2021

Titan Song (The Carter Archives #3) by Dan Stout. I’m currently reading this, and I love being back in Stout’s world! Carter and Jax have a new murder to solve, and we’re learning more about what happened to Carter after the exciting ending of Titan’s Day.

Whisper Down the Lane by Clay McLeod Chapman is a fictionalized story of the “Satanic Panic” of the 1980s. I’ve heard this is more about cults than a real horror story, but I will let you know for sure once I read it!

Another series I’m loving is the Frost Files by Jackson Ford. Eye of the Sh*t Storm is book three in the series, and I’m ready to jump back into this world too.

The Last Watch (The Divide #1) by J.S. Dewes has been getting fantastic reviews already, and I can’t wait to start it.

Finally in April, I am really looking forward to Christina Henry’s next book, Near the Bone, which sounds super scary!

May 2021

I’ve actually already read The Album of Dr. Moreau by Daryl Gregory, and I loved it! I’m doing an interview with the author in May and so I wanted to read the book early before I get my questions together.  Anyway, Gregory fans are going to have fun with this one, and if you’ve never read his books before, this is a great place to start!

Christopher Beulhman is such a talented writer, and I’ve been looking forward to The Blacktongue Thief (Blacktongue #1) for months now.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who can’t wait to read Andy Weir’s new book, Project Hail Mary. My expectations are very high, so it will be interesting to see how it holds up to them!

You’ll notice at the end of this post on my recap from last quarter, I also listed Day Zero by C. Robert Cargill. Apparently the release date was pushed to May, so that’s why it’s on here again.

And yes, I am one of many readers who can’t wait to read the new John Gwynne book, The Shadow of the Gods. At this point I may be the last to read it, since many bloggers I know have already read it!

June 2021

Starting off with my top pick for June, Adrift (Donovan #5) by W. Michael Gear. This series is so strong, each book has been fantastic and I’m pretty sure this one will be as well.

I’ve been seeing some good reviews already for Rabbits by Terry Miles, a book described as a “surreal technothriller.” I think it sounds fantastic!

For the Wolf (Wilderwood #1) by Hannah Whitten looks like a fairy tale based on Little Red Riding Hood, and I’m very curious to try it out.

The Jasmine Throne (Burning Kingdoms #1) by Tasha Suri is another book that’s getting lots of buzz. I haven’t read Suri before so I’m glad I have the chance to remedy that!

And last but not least, I can’t wait to read The Library of the Dead (Edinburgh Nights #1) by T.L. Huchu. I love all these new series that I’m going to be starting, and here’s one more.

Now let’s take a look at how I did last quarter! Not too bad, I only missed a couple of books, and you really can’t count Day Zero because the release date was moved. Books with an “X” are the ones I read:

Do you plan to read any of these books?

  1. You did great with the last quarter ones!
I’m excited for The Jasmine Throne and Library of the Dead. I’m supposed to get the later through the Goldsboro subscription, but it’s been stuck in post-brexit shipping for a month.

Oooh now I wish I hadn’t cancelled my Goldsboro subscription, I would have liked their edition of The Library of the Dead:-)

  2. I could see myself reading a number of these, but first I’ll wait to hear your thoughts on them. The Last Watch intrigues me, though based on its short book blurb I’m not entirely sure what to expect. You did an incredible job with the books this past quarter. But more important than how many you checked off, how much did you enjoy them? I hope you enjoy this quarter’s reads even more! 🙂

    • Tammy

I would have to go back and check my ratings, but overall I enjoyed all the books I read that were on the list. I try to skew my Most Anticipated lists to be books that I’m pretty sure I’m going to love:-)

  3. Loved The Last Watch, and I’m currently enjoying Near the Bone! I feel so behind with The Shadow of the Gods as well. I have an ARC, but I hadn’t picked it up yet since it was so early, haha–I’m getting persuaded to start it soon, though! I’m also really excited for For the Wolf and The Jasmine Throne (Tasha Suri is amazing, I have loved all of her work).
It looks you did amazingly with last quarter’s reads! That’s always a nice feeling. 🙂

  4. Wow, you’re good! Very impressive that you read so many of the books you planned to! I’m excited for Near the bone, Day Zero, The Album of Dr Moreau, and Hail Mary (the ones I have ARCs for so far), and I see a few others I want to read too! I’m reading Whisper Down the Lane now, and I”m already creeped out!

May is a fantastic month! I’d love to catch up with Mask of Mirrors, I hope you love it:-)

  5. As I expected, we have a big overlap in our reading lists, except for April where we only share Near The Bone (which I hope to start today). I look forward to your thoughts on The Last Watch and Whisper Down the Lane, I might check out those if theyr’e good!

  6. It’s a great line-up. I was very disappointed not to be hold of an arc of Project Hail Mary – but I will be getting a copy anyway! So I look forward to seeing what we both make of it. I also have a copy of The Shadow of the Gods and I look forward to seeing what you make of The Library of the Dead! We have one of three books ahead of us for the coming quarter, Tammy:)).

    • Tammy

I will probably buy a physical copy of Project Hail Mary just so I can put it on my bookshelf:-)

  7. You did brilliantly with your reading last quarter. I was doing well but then I really slowed down with my reading this month. Need to perk up! Plenty of books forthcoming to entice me for sure.
    Lynn 😀

  8. I’m so curious about Blacktongue Thief, that seems to be getting a lot of love! Really enjoying The Last Watch so far, I’m about halfway through!

  9. I think it’s probably no surprise that I’m looking forward to the majority of these books, too. xD Great minds think alike, right? I’ve been dyiiiiing to read Eye of the Sh*t Storm, and I’m glad that it’s coming up now so that I can read it and write a review without having to sit on it foreverrrrr. Haha. Sometimes that’s the hardest part of getting ARCs lol.
