The Friday Face-Off: Trick of the Eye

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: Trick of the eye – a cover that is more than meets the eye.

So, I’m not exactly sure what constitutes a “trick of the eye” book cover, but I’m thinking maybe a cover that is detailed or has hidden images? Not sure, but I’ve decided to go with David Mitchell’s The Bone Clocks, because the covers are pretty trippy and there’s a bunch of them! Take a look:

U.S. Edition 2014 | U.K. edition 2014 | Dutch edition 2014

Finnish edition 2017 | Portuguese edition 2016 | Bulgarian edition 2019

Italian edition 2016 | Polish edition 2016 | Croatian edition 2016

Vietnamese edition 2016 | French edition 2017 | Dutch edition 2019

Russian edition 2015 | German edition 2017 | Danish edition 2019

French edition 2018 | Chinese 2016 | Hungarian edition 2019

I haven’t read this book, but I suspect it’s got something to do with clocks, apples and mazes, lol. Also bones. I quite like a lot of these, but my favorite is the Vietnamese because of the bold red color and the simple graphic design:

Which one do you like best?

  1. What a great choice of book for this week’s covers – and I’m kicking myself that this one didn’t occur to me, because I HAVE read it and absolutely LOVED it. It’s a fractured narrative, a bit like Cloud Atlas, but across a tighter timeline as it features a single person throughout her life and being a genius like Mitchell – it’s stunningly good… My favourite is the UK 2014 edition as that is the cover on the book I read and is really pretty, but I also love that Vietnamese cover. I reckon you nailed this week’s challenge, Tammy!

lol – clocks, apples and mazes! I have never read Mitchell either I don’t think, but he has a few on my TBR. I am having a hard time picking a favorite here because they are all so different! A couple of them really make my eyes hurt though.

  3. I never would have thought this book had so many covers! I feel like I’m back in the groove because yes, I love the 2016 Portuguese edition! A lot of them are really cool though.

  4. You chose well, Tammy. More than any other I think this one has a ton of variety and variation between the covers, and they all have some kind of trick of the eye to them. I like that bold Vietnamese cover too.

  5. Oooh, this was a fun topic! I think The Bone Clocks is a perfect fit. I think I really ike the Vietnamese one that you chose, as well as the French and Dutch–that entire row is nice! Honestly, most of these are pretty neat and I’ d be happy to own any, haha. I love some trippy covers!

  6. Wow, there’s huge variety to these covers. Amazing they’re all for the same book. When it comes to trick of the eye I kind of like the Dutch edition. It reminds me of those tubes you look through and twist and watch as the patterns keep changing. Don’t remember what they’re called and too lazy to google it. 🙂

  7. Ooh I like these. The first one might be my favorite- I must gravitate towards that art style or something, because I know I’ve seen similar type covers before and I always seem to like them. 🙂

  8. I simply love David Mitchell’s books. The Bone Clocks was an excellent book and I found it very interesting to see all those different editions.Still, the UK edition is the favourite of mine!

  9. Oooh, I like this! It was a good pick. Definitely looks trippy, but the most impressive thing is that all the different covers look trippy in different ways, which is super neat! The UK edition is pretty splendid, but I have to agree that the Vietnamese version is my favorite.
