Top Ten Witchy Reads for Halloween

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog!

Today is a Halloween freebie for Top Ten Tuesday, and I decided to highlight some books about witches and witchcraft. I’ve split my list in half: five are books I’ve read, and five are upcoming releases that I’m excited about!

Five Books About Witches I’ve Read:

The Witch’s Kind by Louisa Morgan. I loved this book, although the “witch” element is more in the background. It’s mostly just a really good story about family with plenty of mysteries. Simply wonderful, please check out my review if you haven’t yet!

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman. This is the prequel to Hoffman’s beloved Practical Magic, and it’s simply perfect. If you haven’t read either of these books, for some reason, I highly recommend both. Alice Hoffman is a true treasure.

Devil’s Call by J. Danielle Dorn. I just reread my review of this book, which I read about two years ago, and if I didn’t have such a huge TBR pile calling to me, I would seriously consider a reread. How I wish she would write another book!

A Secret History of Witches by Louisa Morgan. Hard to believe I have THREE Louisa Morgan books on this list, but there you go! This wasn’t as good as The Witch’s Kind, but I did enjoy it quite a bit.

The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. I had to go way back and add Anne Rice to this list! I think I’ve read the entire series, and I’m almost sure I have copies of all the books. But it’s been years so I don’t remember much, only that I loved them.

Five Books About Witches on my TBR:

Elysium Girls by Kate Pentecost. I just recently ran across this gorgeous cover, and I was thrilled to find out it features a gang of witches. The story sounds amazing, and I want a copy of the cover on my wall!

The Age of Witches by Louisa Morgan. Yep, another Louisa Morgan book. This looks like a sequel to The Witch’s Kind, but I don’t think it is. If it’s half as mesmerizing as her last book, I’ll be happy:-D

A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers. This looks like a mashup of witchcraft and time travel, which could be really interesting! And that cover is beautiful…

Witches of Ash & Ruin by E. Latimer. This book feels like the “witchiest” of the bunch, for some reason. The blurb describes it as a combination of witchcraft and Celtic mythology. Can’t wait!

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin. This is the only book on my TBR that’s already out, and it’s a book I have an eARC of but haven’t been able to read yet. Reviews so far seem to be very good, so I hope to catch up at some point.

Have you read any of these books? Do you have any other recommendations for me?

  1. I adored The Rules of Magic – such a great book. I also read the Anne Rice series YEARS ago and think all my books disappeared when I was in college. I would really like to reread them someday. Witches of Ash & Ruin sounds awesome. On to the TBR it goes!

  2. Wow, I’ve somehow never read any of these? I’m kind of disappointed in myself. I definitely need to read The Witching Hour! I’ve only made it through a few Anne Rice books, and I need to rectify that soon. Maybe I’ll do an Anne Rice-a-thon next year.I so want to read Elysium Girls, too! There’s just so many things to love about that idea.

  3. Great list! I loved the Anne Rice witch books way back when — well, the first one, anyway. I felt like the series kind of went off the rails in later books, but it definitely started strong! I’ve been wanting to read the Alice Hoffman book, except it’s been so long since I read Practical Magic that I’ve been thinking I should reread that one first. I’d love to read A Witch in Time — looks terrific! What about A Discovery of Witches? That one remains a favorite of mine. Happy Halloween!

  4. I love witches. Obviously HP is a fav, but I also loved Discovery of Witches. I really like everything Anne Rice has done with vampires, but for some reason I could not get into The Witching Hour – it was a DNF for me.

  5. Ooh, I love this list! I really want to check out The Rules of Magic, I’ve heard so many good things about it! All of the books on your TBR are ones I”m dying to check out as well–I hope you enjoy them all when you read them!

  6. I absolutely loved The Witching Hour, and as much as I enjoyed Rice’s vampires I found myself preferring her Mayfair witches. Like you, though, that was quite a while back. Another I might add to the list as one I’ve wanted to read is Witches of Lychford by Paul Cornell.

  7. Love your shares, Tammy, and I want to read all I haven’t read. I agree- Hoffman is a treasure. I recently listened to her newest and it’s brilliant, though I think The Rules of Magic will remain my favorite. The messages in that one were just wow.

  8. What a fabulous list! I am really looking forward to listening to Practical Magic, which I’ve bought as an audiobook. My recommendation is Tanya Huff’s quirky trilogy about a magical family ruled by the aunts – The Enchantment Emporium. It’s more urban fantasy, but they are definitely allll witches:)

  9. Oh this is such a great theme! I have a lot of favorites on this list too. I’m going to have to remember to use this for next year, and hopefully read even more great witchy books between now and then 😀

  10. I’ve only read one of these! (The Witching Hour of course). I do have a couple of others in my TBR. Hope to get to them soon. I’ll have to check out the others that aren’t on my radar, thanks!
