What’s On My Plate – October 2019

Ahhh October, how I love you! The weather is finally cooling down, the excitement of Halloween is in the air, and it’s not quite time for the crazy holiday season to start. The publishing world is out of control, however, and there are so many October releases I want to read! I guess in the scheme of things that’s a good problem to have, right?

I’m posting this a day early, since I didn’t have a review ready to go up today. As I did last month, this is more of a “menu” that I’ll be selecting from, since obviously I won’t be able to get to all of these in only 31 days. I’m listing my “must reads” first, so you’ll definitely be seeing reviews for most of those. Let’s get right to it, shall we?

Most highly anticipated October books:

Ghoster by Jason Arnopp. I’m sad to see a bunch of mixed reviews for this book, but I’m taking my chances because I loved Arnopp’s last book. Plus I follow him on YouTube and he’s really funny!

The Absinthe Earl by Sharon Lynn Fisher. I’ve already read this and loved it! Another unique book from Sharon, she never disappoints. My review will be up soon.

The Girl with no Face by M.H. Boroson. I’ve heard some great things already about this follow-up to Boroson’s The Girl with Ghost Eyes, so I have a feeling I’m going to love it.

The Remaking by Clay McLeod Chapman. Can’t wait to get to this! I got to meet the author at Comic Con and he was really nice. Plus, it sounds like the perfect creepy story for October.

Dark Pattern by Andrew Mayne. The 4th book in Mayne’s addictive series, this should be a fairly quick read, as his books have all been real page turners.

The Rosewater Redemption by Tade Thompson. I’ve really enjoyed this series, and I definitely want to see how it ends. I was just sent a review copy, so it wasn’t on my October plans until recently. Hoping I can squeeze it in this month!

A Lush and Seething Hell by John Hornor Jacobs is a bound book of two novellas. I’ve heard amazing things about this author and I’m dying to check this out.

Interference by Sue Burke. This is book two in Burke’s Semiosis Duology, and I’m so curious to see where she takes her story next. Although this would be a good November book for Sci Fi Month, so if I can’t get to it in October, hopefully next month.

Aurora Blazing by Jessie Mihalik. I LOVED Polaris Rising so I can’t wait to read the follow up!

How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse by K. Eason. I just found out that Eason is a teacher at UC Irvine, the university that my son goes to, which is pretty cool!

More October releases that I hope to read as well:

Hex Life edited by Rachel Autumn Deering and Christopher Golden. This is an anthology of stories about witches, perfect for the Halloween season! My goal is to read this slowly over the month and post a review near Halloween:-)

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher. I’m also looking forward to this spooky sounding story.

The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith. I received this unsolicited but it’s got some pretty good reviews on Goodreads, so I’m optimistic about it.

Sisters of the Vast Black by Lina Rather. I love squeezing Tor.com novellas into my schedule because they’re, um, short! This “nuns in space” story sounds like a blast.

The Light at the Bottom of the World by London Shah. Lots of good ratings already for this book, which makes me happy. This comes out at the end of the month, so at this point it isn’t a priority, but I’m still curious.

Full Throttle by Joe Hill. I requested this on a whim on NetGalley (honestly, you should never “request on a whim” because then if you get approved, you’re stuck! LOL). Not that I don’t love Joe Hill, but I already have so many books, I’m not sure this will be a priority.

Dreams of Lake Drukka & Exhumation by Mike Thorn (Short Sharp Shocks! #31). Mike was kind enough to request a review of his book, which is part a series called Short Sharp Shocks that I’ve been seeing around the internet. And because it’s very short, at only about 40 pages, I agreed to read it.

Fireborne by Rosaria Munda. This was a “read now” on NetGalley, and I decided to take advantage of it. I’ve been hearing really good things about it, plus the Penguin Random folks at Comic Con were really pitching it hard!

The Furies by Katie Lowe. I requested this months ago and had almost forgotten about it. I definitely want to read it at some point, but I have to admit for now it’s not a priority.

And as if nineteen books isn’t enough to choose from, I’ve got a whole slew of October releases I got at Comic Con that aren’t even on this list! And I WANT TO READ THEM ALL:

Steel Crow Saga by Paul Krueger. I’ve already heard amazing things about this book, and I met Paul at Comic Con and he was super nice.

The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh. I also got to meet Renée! I have seen mixed reviews for this book, unfortunately, but I often love books that other reviewers don’t, so we’ll see..

The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith. I mean, it’s about a library from Hell! If there is anyone out there who doesn’t want to read about that, I’m not sure we can be friends…

War Girls by Tochi Onyebuchi. I also got to meet Tochi and he was super nice and down to earth. This might be more of a Sci Fi Month book, so I might try to read this for November.

Salvaged by Madeleine Roux. And here’s another contender for next month. I hadn’t realized I had so many science fiction releases!

NOT TO MENTION there are still some September books I’m trying to catch up on, and there is one particular December release I intend to read early, which I’m not highlighting here simply because it’s not coming out this month.

In addition to reviews, you can expect the usual suspects: Future Fiction, The Friday Face-Off, at least three Top Ten Tuesday lists, my Book Review Giveaway, and hopefully an author interview or two (still in the works).

It’s going to be a crazy month. Join me for the madness! And do let me know if you plan on reading anything on my list:-D

  1. It really is a crazy busy fall, but then I guess that’s typical. You’ve got some awesome sounding books in there! I’m excited to see what you think of Sisters of the Vast Black and Ghosted!

Those two are on my list to read for sure, hopefully I’ll love both of them. It seems like a really strong month for new releases, I’m excited:-)

  2. There are soooo many good books coming out. I’m impressed by your list and am trying to figure out what I NEED to read versus what I want to read. I picked up “Bunny” this weekend as an unplanned whim, even though I knew I planned on getting to it, and wished I had spent the time reading something else. At least I finished it. I was not impressed and hope you like it better than I did when you get around to it. I’m sure it was me, but The Hunger has a new friend 🙂 Hope you get to tons of these and I can’t wait for the reviews!

  3. I am also SUPER excited about the cooler weather, it’s been so nice. I’m just sad it won’t last that long here though, but who knows, we could get a nice November, it could happen. 🙂
I’m really looking forward to The Absinthe Earl, but probably won’t be able to get to it til December. Looks like a great month ahead of you, Tammy!
