Future Fiction #35: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

One thrilling cover reveal, one new-to-me book, and another gorgeous cover that was revealed a few weeks ago:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris returns with the second of the Gunnie Rose series, in which Lizbeth is hired onto a new crew, transporting a crate into Dixie, the self-exiled southeast territory of the former United States. What the crate contains is something so powerful, that forces from across three territories want to possess it.

In this second thrilling installment of the Gunnie Rose series, Lizbeth Rose is hired onto a new crew for a seemingly easy protection job, transporting a crate into Dixie, just about the last part of the former United States of America she wants to visit. But what seemed like a straight-forward job turns into a massacre as the crate is stolen. Up against a wall in Dixie, where social norms have stepped back into the last century, Lizbeth has to go undercover with an old friend to retrieve the crate as what’s inside can spark a rebellion, if she can get it back in time.

A Longer Fall (Gunnie Rose #2) by Charlaine Harris. Releases in January from Gallery/Saga Press.  I’m thrilled to see there is now a cover for the sequel to An Easy Death, which I LOVED last year! But. As lovely as this cover is, it doesn’t match the first book AT ALL. I’ve never been that concerned about series covers matching, but because I loved the first cover, I was hoping for a similar style. Not sure why the change, but there you go. In any case, it’s the words inside that are most important! Cover art by Colin Anderson.

A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy of betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery set in turn-of-the-century France.

For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith. Releases in October 2019 from 47North. I’m including this because I received a surprise ARC in the mail last week, and by surprise I mean I had never even heard of this book. And I bet you thought I was done talking about witch-centric books, but nope, here’s another one. I think this sounds fantastic!

With the heart of an Atwood tale and the visuals of a classic Asian period drama The Empress of Salt and Fortune is a tightly and lushly written narrative about empire, storytelling, and the anger of women.

A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage. Alone and sometimes reviled, she has only her servants on her side. This evocative debut chronicles her rise to power through the eyes of her handmaiden, at once feminist high fantasy and a thrilling indictment of monarchy.

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo. Releases in March 2020 from Tor.com.  I’ll admit it was the cover that got my attention. I mean, there are a bunch of cute animals on this cover and I want to know why! I’m intrigued by the story as well:-D Cover art by Alyssa Winans.

I think it also had a title change. It was listed on Goodreads as The Long Fall for awhile, so maybe that’s why you couldn’t find it.

Me too, I can’t wait to see where Harris is taking her story. Also curious about the cover change!

  1. So yep, you got me again. All three are now on my TBR. So I’ve been waiting forever for the Harris cover reveal but what happened? The first cover was almost perfect for the story. This one really bothers me. I agree, it’s a nice cover but doesn’t fit at all IMO. Great choices though and I guess it’s what between the cover right?

I’m glad I’m not alone with my feelings about the cover. It’s just such a complete turn around from the first book! It almost feels YA to me. Oh well, we shall see…

I know, I keep finding the “witch” books, lol. Now to figure out which are the best ones:-)

  2. Huh, I didn’t realize Charlaine Harris had a new series. After the letdown of the last several Sookie books, I’ve sworn off her… although this does sound good! I love the sound of the witch book too. Nice selection!

Her new series is really different from both Sookie Stackhouse and Midnight Texas. I highly recommend it!

I just love the cover of A Longer Fall, but it’s so different from the first book. Maybe they are changing the design for the paperback release.

  3. I LOVED An Easy Death, so I’m really excited about A Longer Fall… hoping I get approved for it:)). Thank you for the headsup, Tammy – once again an awesome list!

Me too! I’m dying to read A Longer Fall, I feel like the last book came out years ago, although I think it was just last year:-)

  4. As I read about the first title you featured, I thought to myself, “How did I not know about this series?!” I love Charlaine Harris. So that’s going on my wish list. And then you post about The Vine Witch, which of course I cannot resist because–witch! You end with The Empress of Salt and Fortune, which, oh my gosh, I want to read that one too! Stop! I already have too much to read! I hope you enjoy all of these. Have a great weekend!

Ha ha, sorry to add to your TBR! The Gunnie Rose series is my favorite from Charlaine Harris, I hope you get the chance to read it:-)

    • Tammy

Charlaine Harris’ series is so good. I’m not a fan of some of her other books, but for some reason this series works really well for me:-)
