What’s On My Plate – August 2019

Did July fly by or was it just me? I swear it can’t possibly be August! I did not have a good reading month, as far as quantity went, but I did read some really good books in July, so I can’t complain too much. I have a fair amount of August review books to read, but I’d also love to go back and catch up on some July titles that I just couldn’t get to. Hey, story of my life!

Otherwise, August is bittersweet because my daughter goes back to school at the end of the month (my son will be home until the end of September). I swear this summer went by in a blink!

But on to the books. Here is what I plan to read and review this month:

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. So I think I missed the memo and the release date for this book was moved. At some point this was an August release but not anymore…so I’m a little behind. I’ve read some great reviews, so I’m very excited to dig in.

The Warehouse by Rob Hart. I just met Rob at Comic Con and so I’m even more excited to read his latest.

Last Ones Left Alive by Sarah Davis-Goff. A post apocalyptic zombie story that sounds like fun! I have a couple of horror books to read this month and this is the first.

Remember Me by Chelsea Bobulski. And how about some YA horror? This sounds like a cool ghost story. Chelsea Bobulski wrote another YA horror last year that I never got around to reading, The Wood, so I hope I can get to this.

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig. This is a fantasy retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, and I’m already hearing good things.

Infernal by Cheryl Low. This was the rare author request that I accepted, and I’m quite looking forward to it. The book has been out since last year, but I’m going to try my best to read it this month. And yay, another horror story!

Cry Pilot by Joel Dane. This was sent unsolicited by Ace, but I do hope I can squeeze it in. Military SF isn’t usually my jam, but this does sound good.

Rotherweird by Andrew Caldecott. I’m a little nervous about this book, since the reviews on Goodreads are sort of mixed. Also it’s almost 500 pages. But, we shall see…

By the Feet of Men by Grant Price. And here’s ANOTHER author request that I accepted! Grant sent me this MONTHS ago but asked if I would review it no later than August, and so here we are. This is “cli-fi” which is a subgenre I’m really loving.

Blog Tours

I’m really trying to cut back on blog tours, because they actually stress me out, having to post a review on a certain date. But I couldn’t be more excited for both these books. Next week I’ll be reviewing The Gossamer Mage by Julie E. Czerneda for DAW’s blog tour (August 6th) and at the end of the month, I’ll post my review of The Passengers by John Marrs  for Berkley Books (August 27th).

Author Interviews/Giveaways:

I’m also looking forward to reading Ration by Cody T. Luff, and I’ll be hosting the author on the blog with an interview as well.  Tentative interview date is August 20th, but don’t quote me on that since I still have to read the book and send the author my questions (panic sets in!).

And stop by on August 15th for my monthly Book Review Giveaway, where you can win one of the books I reviewed in July. As always, this is an international giveaway:-D

And that’s how my August is shaping up. I’m feeling a bit stressed right now, especially since I haven’t even mentioned I agreed to do a buddy read of Gideon the Ninth, and I really should be reading it right now. Wish me luck!

Are you reading any of these books in August?

  1. July really did fly by! Hopefully August slows it down some, or summer will be over before we know it. I mean, I love autumn, wish it was year round, but that would just mean winter was ever closer already. :3

  2. Looks like fun! I checked out the synopsis of The Warehouse a while back and was tempted to request — I’ll wait for your review and then decide whether to read it. Last Ones Left Alive sounds like a fun (creepy) read. Looking forward to your reviews!

  3. Stressful August reads, woohoo! I put 12 books on my docket and I really shouldn’t have. Curious to see how you feel about Rotherweird if you get to it, I received an unsolicited review copy but haven’t been super motivated to put it at the top of my stack…

I’m worried about Rotherweird but maybe because I’ve seen some negative reviews. A lot of people seem to like it!

  4. Can’t wait for your thoughts on Gideon (but I’m sorry it’s turning into a stressful month). I’m also looking forward to your review of Last Ones Left Alive. For some reason I’m just really loving survival stories this year.

    • Tammy

After Wanderers I don’t blame you! I’m a little nervous about Gideon because of the hype, but hopefully it will be good!

I’ve seen some glowing reviews, but I also know a blogger who didn’t finish it:-/ We shall see…

          • Oooh. A DNF?! It could just be the brand of humor. I seem to recall one blurb talking about dirty magazines. That kind of stuff/humor puts off some readers. Of course, it might not have anything to do with that, but I can see how it would not be for everybody.

  5. I’ll be on the lookout for your Gossamer Mage review. I have a feeling that I’ll like that one if/when I read it.
And yea, July fly by. I was thinking about that today. It went by mad fast.

    • Tammy

I just started it and, hmmm, I’m struggling a little. We’ll see how it goes as I get into it more.

  6. Just finished Jade and Shadow (loved it) and am starting on Cry Pilot at the moment but having a hard time getting into the story. It’s heavy military sci-fi, harder than I usually prefer but it’s still early though, so I’m hoping it picks up!

    • Tammy

Cry Pilot will be at the end of my pile, since I didn’t request it. Maybe I’ll wait to read your review:-)

  7. I really want to read Gods of Jade and Shadow, and keep hoping the library will order a copy.
I have Rotherweird and The Passengers on my TBR pile too, so look forward to reading what you thought of both of those.

  8. I can’t believe how quickly the time is flying. The really scary thing is that I feel like we’ll soon start the dreaded build up to Christmas! I’m just waiting to see which store starts the onslaught first.
I think a couple of my books have had changing dates recently so they’ve either been earlier or later than I expected. It messes me up.
You’ve got some great looking books this moth.
    Lynn 😀

  9. Time is always funny. During one stretch it seems to drag on and on and on, but during another its feels like its gone in an instant. I hope you’re able to slow it down enough to get in all the reading you’d like. I don’t have any of these books, but I keep reading about Gods of Jade and Shadow and thinking I’d like to read it. And I also like the sound of The Gossamer Mage. I look forward to reading your take on them.

    • Tammy

Thanks Todd, I definitely need time to slow down because I have so many books I want to read;-)

  10. Last Ones Left Alive has been on my radar for a while now! I haven’t read post apocalyptic and/or zombie books for some time now but something just really catches my interest and draws me to it?? Maybe you will enjoy it and that will be the final push to just read it myself haha.

  11. I’m excited about so many of these, Tammy! I’m also on The Passengers tour (can’t wait) and Gods of Jade and Shadow is coming up for me too. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on all of these, but especially The Warehouse and The Last Ones Left Alive. I agree- summer has gone by way too quickly. I’m going to miss it!

    • Tammy

I hope we both love all the books we have in common this month. I feel like it’s really going to be a spectacular month for new releases:-)

  12. This summer HAS gone by in a blink – I’m already getting pre-depressed about it ending. Hope August treats you well, Tammy! Looks like you have some great books ahead of you.

  13. Oh, I can’t wait to start Gideon the Ninth! I look forward to seeing what you think of it. I’m really hoping to love it. Looks like you’ve got a great lineup of books for this month. House of Salt and Sorrows and Gods of Jade and Shadow are supposed to be really good, and I’ll be watching for your review on those. :3 Hope you enjoy!

I hope I’m going to love Gideon as well, just about everyone has great things to say about it:-)

  14. House of Salt and Sorrows is one of the books I’m looking forward to the most! Everyone who’s read it so far has been saying positive stuff and it makes me excited to have this in my hands!

  15. Yeah, Rotherweird was sadly a DNF for me. 🙁 But I do know other people loved it, so fingers-crossed it works out for you!! And I’m excited to see what you’ll think of The Passengers! The premise is so creepy and I’m hoping to get to it this month too. 😀

    • Tammy

Ooh, I’m halfway through The Passengers and it’s crazy! It’s hard to put down. It’s not perfect but boy it’s a fun read.

    • Tammy

Ha ha, I know what you mean. I really enjoyed Gods of Jade and Shadow and I’ll be reviewing it soon:-)
