Over-Booked [105] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I wanted to slip in an Over-Booked post before I go to Comic Con, because I anticipate doing an SDCC book haul post when I come back, and I didn’t want any of my recent acquisitions to get lost in the shuffle. Huge thanks to all the authors and publishers for sending these my way!

Physical books for review:

The Throne of the Five Winds by S.C. Emmett was a surprise from Orbit Books. It’s a chunky book coming in at 700 pages, and it appears to be the first in a new series. This comes out in October, so I may wait to read a few early reviews first before I commit.

Sweet Dreams by Tricia Sullivan. This is the US release of a book that has been out in the UK for a few years. I’m hoping to squeeze this in by the end of the month. I’ve heard some really good things about it!

The Record Keeper by Agnes Gomillion. There’s been a fair amount of buzz for this book, which is a dystopian take on slavery. I think I’m going to have to be in the mood for a heavier read for this one, so I may wait until later in the summer.

The Heart of Hell by Wayne Barlowe. This was a surprise from Tor Books. Apparently it’s the second book in a series, but the first book came out way back in 2007. I’m not sure if this can be read as a stand alone or not, has anyone read the first book, God’s Demon?

The Absinthe Earl by Sharon Lynn Fisher. I’m thrilled to have a physical, signed copy of this book! Woo woo! Sharon was kind enough to send me a copy, and I can hardly wait to read this!

Walk the Wild With Me by Rachel Atwood. Ooh an exciting surprise from DAW Books! I featured this recently in a Future Fiction post, so of course I was very happy to see this in the mail:-)

Infernal by Cheryl Low. Cheryl contacted me to see if I would read her latest, and although I don’t normally take on books from publishers I’m not familiar with, I decided to go for it, especially when I saw all the 5 star reviews on Goodreads. Plus I had no idea Cheryl lives in Sweden and she literally mailed this from Sweden! I feel sort of bad, but also excited because it sounds so good!

Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim was another surprise, and I’m actually very happy to have this. It’s been getting tons of really good reviews, so depending on how my time goes, I’d love to read this soon, if not this month then possibly in August.

Huge thanks to Tor, Orbit, Sharon Lynn Fisher & Blackstone Publishing, Titan, DAW Books, Cheryl Low and Grinning Skull Press and Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers!

Digital books for review:

All my digital books this week are blue, and I think that is a happy coincidence!

CUE SCREAMS!! I was SO EXCITED when The Deep by Rivers Solomon popped up on NetGalley. I grabbed it immediately! This is one of my most highly anticipated books this fall, and I plan on reading it early. I usually have a hard time managing release schedules, but this is one book I’ll make a priority.

I was excited to be approved for Remember Me by Chelsea Bobulski. I recently featured it on a Future Fiction post, and I love the sound of this YA mystery/ghost story. This comes out next month, so I won’t have to wait long to read it.

Finally, I was just approved for Reverie by Ryan La Sala, a book that has also been featured on Future Fiction. I love the sound of this one, although it doesn’t come out until next January, so I have a fairly long wait…

Thank you Saga Press, Feiwel & Friends and Sourcebooks Fire!

Purchased:

My preorder of Wanderers by Chuck Wendig came in, but I have yet to receive my preorder incentive pin (although I’m sure it’s on the way!) I was hoping to finish this by now (and as you read this I’m plugging away at it!) 800 pages is a lot, especially when you’re only reading for an hour or so at night after work, but wow, I’m LOVING this book. Hopefully you’ll see a review up next week!

And that’s my haul this week! Let me know if you’ve read—or are planning to read—any of these books:-D

  1. You have a fabulous collection of TBR’s. I can’t tell what’s on the cover of Sweet Dreams, but oddly that’s the cover that caught my attention first!

Same here, I’ve seen about three bloggers’ reviews of Spin the Dawn and they were all raves. Now I have to read it:-)

  2. I got a copy of THRONE OF THE FIVE WINDS too, and it is looking to be very much my jam! I’ll be happy to share my thoughts when I’ve had time to read it. 🙂

I got auto approval status on Edelweiss for Macmillan and Tor and dear GOD there are too many good options I can add to my pile now….

Oh no, I just checked Edelweiss and I’m auto approved for Macmillan/Tor too!!! That is going to be dangerous. When did this happen??

      • I noticed a bunch of new stuff in my “Downloads” section earlier this week, but I thought it was some sort of coding mistake and they would get moved back to Request. After talking to a few people on Twitter, I realized what had happened!

So maybe they just decided to make regular Macmillan reviewers “auto approved”…cool.

  3. So excited to see your reviews on some of these!! Especially The Deep and Wanderers!! (Which I am also reading now and loving. It’s long, but I find it going by pretty quickly.)

I’m trying to finish Wanderers today, but I still have about 20% left, which translates into 175 pages or so. Not sure I can do it, but wow it’s getting really good!!

      • You can do it!! I’m at about the 50% mark so I’m a little behind you. Hoping to finish this weekend. I was expecting it to be a little wider in scope I guess? More post-apocalypse than pre-apocalypse? I guess I’ll see where it’s headed!

        • Tammy

It’s a pretty ambitious book, I think. Going from before the apocalypse to after. I’m dying to find out how it ends!

          • It sounds like it has both parts then! That’s good I’m excited for the second half. I mean I’m enjoying part one too- and it’s nice to get both pre and post, it just wasn’t the setup I was expecting. I’ll definitely have to buy a copy at some point I think. Mine is from the library.

I have a NetGalley copy I’m reading on my Kindle, but I also bought a hardcover. It’s so big the Kindle is easier to read, lol.

  4. I love the look (and sound) of Spin the Dawn – and isn’t that cover lovely??? And the other one of your fab collection that has me drooling is Walk the Wild With Me – the premise sound awesome and that cover is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing, Tammy:))

I’m very excited for Spin the Dawn, especially since I’ve seen so many glowing reviews:-)

I feel super lucky to be going to SDCC. Every year is a crap shoot when tickets go on sale!

  5. Haha, looks a lot like my haul! I’m curious to try The Throne of the Five Winds too, funny how I hadn’t even heard about it until it literally landed on my doorstep and same kinda goes for Walk the Wild With Me, but both look interesting!

  6. Lots of good looking books and the digital ones are all ones I’m curious about, Can’t wait for your Wanderers review. I was able to grab it for 3.00 for my Kindle due to some wishlist credit I have never heard of but for some reason received. I’ll be diving into it this fall I’m sure. Hope you have fun at ComicCon.

  7. I really want to check out The Absinthe Earl! Not only is the cover a win for me, but just looking at it, well, I can tell it’s a very ‘me’ type of book. Lots of other great stuff here. I can’t wait to get to Spin the Dawn! Happy Reading!
