Ten Books I’m Excited to Read This Summer

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog!

I wish this prompt were a little earlier in the summer, since I think of summer as the months of June, July and August. June is nearly over so I feel as if I’m leaving some of my “summer” books off this list. However, I wanted to participate anyway, and you will see some of these July releases on my What’s On My Plate next week. Yay for repetition! LOL. As always, this is not a complete list by any means, and I’ve already read some excellent “summer” books that I’m not listing today:

Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O’Keefe. Released on June 11 2019. I’m in the middle of this book right now, and I hope to have a review up by the end of the month. This is a fast-paced space opera that I’m really enjoying!

Priest of Lies by Peter McLean. Releases on July 2 2019. This is book #2 in McLean’s War for the Rose Throne series, and I’m very happy to have a review copy.

Wanderers by Chuck Wendig. Releases on July 2 2019. This is one of my MOST highly anticipated books of the year, and I hope to start it soon. It’s a whopper of a book, coming in at over 800 pages, and I know it will take me longer than usual to read. Look for a review next month!

The Toll by Cherie Priest. Releases on July 9 2019. I’m looking forward to some good old fashioned horror this summer, and I know I can count on Cherie Priest to deliver!

Wilder Girls by Rory Power. Releases on July 9. I was hoping to get a review copy of this highly buzzed book, but I just couldn’t swing it. My NetGalley request is still hanging out there, so I suppose there’s a slim chance I’ll still be approved. But if not, this is a book I’ll probably buy because I really want to read it!

This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone. Releases on July 16. I’m so happy to have a copy of this book. It’s pretty short, almost novella-sized, so look for a review soon.

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Releases on July 23. I’m craving another Moreno-Garcia story, and I’m happy this is coming out next month!

Here There Are Monsters by Amelinda Bérubé. Releases August 11. Unfortunately my request for this book was declined, so I’m not sure I’ll ever get to read it, but I did want to list it here because I’m still very much interested.

Ration by Cody T. Luff. Releases August 13. This story sounds very dark, and I can’t wait to read it. I’m planning on interviewing the author in August, and I’ll have more details about that later in the summer.

Our War by Craig DiLouie. Releases August 20. I think this is going to be a challenging read, but I really enjoyed the last DiLouie book I read, so I’m very much looking forward to this one too.

Are you planning to read any of these books?

  1. Great list – this theme felt a bit like last week’s in some ways and I agree about missing June but – I still found it easy which is probably a testament to how ridiculous my tbr is at the moment. I’ve got four of these on my list this week. Plus Ration – I’ll be reading that for review in September – I was really intrigued by the description.

These were two similar lists in a row, but you’re right, my TBR is neverending so it wasn’t that hard:-)

  2. I had hoped to get Wanderers done by release but only just saw the other day that it’s 800 pages so that’s not going to happen lol.

    • Tammy

Yeah, me too, I feel like I needed to start it two weeks ago but I was trying to cram in a bunch of June releases:-/ #bloggerproblems

  3. I didn’t snag a review copy of The Wanderers but do plan on grabbing it for my Kindle when it’s released. I am also really excited about The Toll and Wilder Girls. There are so many good books coming out in summer/fall – if I could only retire and read all the time!

  4. Fun list! I have The Toll on my list this week too, and I’m also planning to read Wilder Girls (even though the title automatically makes me think of the Little House books 🙂 ). Our War sounds intense and fascinating — but I should probably read One of Us (sitting on my Kindle since last summer) before taking on a new book by the same author. Wanderers does sound amazing, but with so much else to read, the length is scaring me off. I’ll wait for your review and then decide!

I’m definitely scared by the length of Wanderers, but I’ve heard so many amazing things that there’s no way I’m missing it:-)

    • Tammy

I’ve heard Wanderers reads pretty quickly, even with that page count. I might start it next, I’ll let you know:-)

  5. Great list!
I’m glad you’re liking Velocity Weapon, it’s one of the books I hope to get to next. And same, I can’t wait to read Gods of Jade and Shadow, the only other book I read by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Certain Dark Things) was really good.
I just finished This Is How You Lose the Time War and it was… a very interesting read, I really liked it. I hope it works for you too!

Oh cool, it sounds different, and I usually have pretty good luck with “different.”

  6. I’m curious about the Peter McLean Priest books because of all the buzz about them. I got the ebook so I’ll try it eventually.

I wasn’t 100% in love with the first book, Priest of Bones, but I am curious to see what he does next, so I’ll definitely read the sequel.

  7. Velocity Weapon is one I’m not familiar with, but I love the sound of a fast paced space opera. Wilder Girls looks pretty fantastic too.

  8. I love your choices, Tammy! I have Wanderers (have read many great things!) and Gods of Jade and Shadow (It sounds so unique!). I hope you enjoy your summer reads- and yes, summer starts in June or even late May for me, too.

  9. Oh hello, I believe you said ‘fast-paced space opera’. Congratulations, you have summoned a reading reptile!

…but seriously, Megan O’Keefe has been vaguely on my radar for a while and isn’t someone I’ve read. Sounds like a good excuse?

I didn’t realise Time War was so short – that’s brilliant news, I suddenly feel better about squeezing it in over the next 10 days 🙂

    • Tammy

I’m really having fun with Velocity Weapon, and it’s my first O’Keefe book too:-) And yay for short books;-)

  10. I think of the ones on here, Gods of Jade and Shadow is on the top of my list. I still need to tackle Velocity Weapon, I meant to get to it this month after bumping it from my “might” to “must” list, but looks like it’ll have to wait until July!

    • Tammy

I know what you mean. I still have June books that I won’t be able to read until later. I’m really enjoying Velocity Weapon, though!

  11. Hope you manage to read them all 🙂
I wanna try a book by Chuck Wendig, so far i haven’t read any. This one on your list looks pretty cool 🙂

  12. I’m really excited for This is How You Lose the Time War, I’ve been hearing so many great things. It also seems like it might be interesting from a story structure perspective too. Can’t wait!
