Eighteen Fantasy Debuts I Can’t Wait to Read #wyrdandwonder

A couple of weeks ago I highlighted Ten Fantasy Sequels I Can’t Wait to Read, and today I’m shining a light on some fantasy debuts that sound amazing! Why eighteen? Well, I just couldn’t stop at ten, there are so many fantasy debuts coming out over the next twelve months and I wanted to include as many as possible. Note: this is not a comprehensive list! These are simply the debuts that have caught my eye at this point in time, and books that already have cover art. Take a look:

Shatter the Sky by Rebecca Kim Wells. Releases July 30th. This gorgeous cover drew me in, and the fact that there are dragons in the story sealed the deal:-D

The Phantom Forest by Liz Kerin. Releases July 16th. I can’t remember where I saw this book, maybe NetGalley? But I love the idea of going to the Underworld and joining forces with a demon!

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig. Releases August 6th. This is a retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses and sounds AMAZING.

Bright Star by Erin Swan. Releases August 13th. Another beautiful cover, another story with a dragon! I am finding that combination hard to resist.

Crown of Coral and Pearl by Mara Rutherford. Releases August 27th. This seems like it might be a good “sister” story, and I’m always up for one of those.

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin. Releases September 3rd. Witches! That is all.

The Nightjar by Deborah Hewitt. Releases September 3rd. I’m unbelievably excited about this book! I love contemporary fantasy settings, and this story has an magical, alternate London as part of the setting. Plus birds!

Stormrise by Jillian Boehme. Releases September 10th. I’ve talked about this book before, but I want to reiterate how much I want to pet the furry dragon on the cover!

The Resurrectionist of Caligo by Wendy Trimboli & Alicia Zaloga. Releases September 10th. This is a Victorian era fantasy that looks like so much fun! Plus this cover makes me so happy:-)

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron. Releases September 10th. I’ve already featured this book in a Future Fiction, but I can’t help but showcase it again because it’s a debut I can’t wait to read:-D

The Memory Thief by Lauren Mansy. Releases October 1st. This sounds like a really good mother/daughter relationship story, and the cover is so beautiful.

Crier’s War by Nina Varela. Releases October 1st. This is being compared to Game of Thrones, among other things, and I have to admit I’m intrigued!

Gravemaidens by Kelly Coon. Releases October 29th. This already has lots of 4 and 5 star reviews on Goodreads, and I can’t wait to read it.

Songs from the Deep by Kelly Powell. Releases November 5th. Deadly sirens!! That’s all you need to know:-D

Blood Heir by Amélie Wen Zhao. Releases November 19th. There’s been quite a lot of controversy over the publication of this book, it was pulled by the author but now it’s back on the publishing schedule. I’m very happy, because I was so mad at all the Twitter assholes who forced Zhao to do what she did.

Walk the Wild with Me by Rachel Atwood. Releases December 3rd. This seems to be a book about the fae, although the description on Goodreads is a little long and convoluted for my tastes. But I’m curious, and looking forward to this.

Reverie by Ryan La Sala. Releases January 1st 2020. This #OwnVoices story is described as “Inception meets The Magicians, except with better wigs”! Add in that stunning cover and I’m on board!

Ink in the Blood by Kim Smejkal. Releases February 11 2020. A story about tattoo magic and theatre plays a part in the story as well? Yes, I will definitely be reading this:-D

I hope you’ve found something new to add to your TBR! Let me know if you’re excited about any of these debuts as well:-D

  1. WHY! Did my wislist seem extremely low on options? Seriously you are killing me. I can chose about 10 here (at least) I’d like to check out and I definitely want to pet the furry dragon as well.

Yeah, Twitter can be brutal. You have to have nerves of steel to interact there sometimes!

  2. I haven’t heard of most of these but I can already tell I want to read several of them. And I’m just blown away by all those gorgeous covers. I love that House of Salt and Sorrows is a retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses. That got me really excited!

Twelve Dancing Princesses isn’t a retelling you run across a lot, so I’m very curious to see how it’s handled:-)

    • Tammy

I agree, that cover for Reverie is so beautiful and the story sounds really good too:-)

  3. Ooh I hadn’t heard of most of these. The Phantom Forest sounds intriguing, and I love that cover. Definitely added The Nightjar to my wish list! Ink in the Blood also sounds great. Thanks for sharing!

Me too!! And I remember the author confirming her dragon has both fur and scales:-)

  4. When I saw that The Phantom Forest was a “Read Now” on Netgalley, I nabbed it immediately! (though I’m not sure if it still is?) And I’m generally skeptical about books that get compared to Game of Thrones, but Crier’s War does sound really cool!

  5. So many of these that I want! GIVE THEM TO ME! Okay, sorry.
Blood Heir – I love that cover.
I want to pet the dragon – although you could lose a hand by the looks of it.
Memory Thief and Nightjar really appeal to me.
    I’m doomed.

I somehow missed this post before- but these all sound amazing. Kingdom of Souls and The Nightjar especially- but I hadn’t heard of Ink in the Blood yet and tattoo magic just seems like it would be awesome!

I have a thing for tattoo magic, I guess I’ve read quite a few books with that concept, so I’m hoping Ink in the Blood is good:-)

  7. The Phantom of Forest and The Resurrectionist of Caligo caught my eye too! I’m glad Blood Heir is back to being published, I hope I can snag another ARC of that one since I was looking forward to it before the whole controversy! I’ve read one book about tattoo magic, although I hadn’t heard of this one. It’s such an interesting idea!

  8. I’ve been bouncing about House of Salt and Sorrow for a while but I think you just totally distracted me with Inception meets The Magicians with better wigs. And I didn’t even LIKE The Magicians 😉

I’m definitely curious to hear more about Songs from the Deep too – To Kill a Kingdom and Into the Drowning Deep have whetted my appetite for siren stories!
