What’s On My Plate – March 2019

Can you believe it’s already MARCH? I can’t. Wherever you live, I hope that spring is starting to make an appearance. I am so ready for winter to be over myself. But while we wait for things to warm up, there are plenty of books coming out in March that I hope to read. I have review copies for all of these, so we’ll see how many I can actually get through. Also, I’m still catching up from January and February so you may see other reviews pop up that aren’t on this list. Here’s what I have on my plate this month:

I’m thrilled to finally be sharing my review for Do You Dream of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh. I read it back in September, so it’s been quite a long wait! I absolutely loved this book, so look for my review on Monday!

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of The Municipalists by Seth Fried after the author saw a post about his book on my blog and sent me his publicist’s info.  I’ve been holding onto this puppy for months now, and I’m glad it’s finally time to read it!

The Rosewater Insurrection by Tade Thompson. The follow-up to Thompson’s Rosewater is one of my most highly anticipated books this month! I’ve already seen some glowing reviews:-)

Wild Country by Anne Bishop is another “must read” this month. After devouring Lake Silence, I am more than ready to jump back into this series. This book is a standalone set in the same world, but with a different set of characters.

By the time you read this, my review copy of The Witch’s Kind by Louisa Morgan should be here. I enjoyed the last book I read by Morgan, A Secret History of Witches, and I’m happy I can read more of her work.

Never-Contented Things by Sarah Porter takes place in the fey realm. I’m seeing some very mixed reviews, so I’m even more curious to read it! (Isn’t that weird how “mixed reviews” gets me excited to read something?)

Ace Books is currently running a cool giveaway for The True Queen by Zen Cho (US only, sorry international readers!), in case you missed my post on Tuesday, so head over and enter if you haven’t! Ace is kindly sending me a review copy, so look for a review this month.

I never read The Near Witch when it first released back in 2011, but now that V.E. Schwab is almost a household name, Titan Books is rereleasing her first book.  I love the beautiful cover, and I’m quite looking forward to this!

I’m ridiculously excited to read Titanshade by Dan Stout, it sounds sooo good. Plus the cover is giving me Alien Nation vibes (anyone??)

So, um, I was on the blog tour yesterday for The Dysasters, if anyone happened to stop by. And I was supposed to post my review. But well, I really hated this book. So in fairness to the authors and promoters, I opted to post my review after the blog tour was over. And it’s going to be a rant, so if you’re in the mood for that, stop by next Tuesday!

Finally, I can’t leave without mentioning a couple of Serial Box stories I’m reading. First, I’ll be finishing up the last few episodes of Ninth Step Station this month. Have you been keeping up with my weekly reviews? It’s been quite a fun experiment, one I wasn’t sure I could follow through with. But I’m in the home stretch, and I’m planning on doing it again!

The Vela starts March 6th, and it’s written by Yoon Ha Lee, Becky Chambers, Rivers Solomon and S.L. Huang. I’m mean, wow what a lineup, right? This looks like an exciting space opera, and I’m going to try once more to post short, weekly reviews/recaps. I’ve been posting Ninth Step Station episodes on Wednesdays, but to make it a little easier, I think I’ll move my posts for The Vela to Saturdays. Tentatively, look for a review of Episode 1 on March 9th.

  1. Oh man, so many cool books! I’m doomed 😀
I got a copy of Smoke & Summons. Read a few books by the author and i really like her style.
Heard about Terra 2, so curious to see your review.
The Municipalists sounds good! Saved it on GR, and the Titan one has the coolest cover ever!

  2. I’ll be curious to see what you think of Never Contented Things. I’ve only seen one review so far and even it seemed mixed. Love the cover though.

I read one review that really pushed me over the edge and made me want to read it, so we’ll see! There are some awful reviews on Goodreads, but I’m waiting to form my own opinions:-)

  3. Now that’s an ambitious list. I have to take a look at what I want to knock out. I’ve been trying to read some back titles so it’s looking like it might be a mix of dogs and horror. I had a decent month in February and read some great books so that was exciting. I have to work in Never Contented Things and I perfectly get that mixed reviews make you curious. For me it’s all about seeing what side I fall on. Stormi and I have 2 books for buddy reads and I’m starting a third with Maria at the end of the month and all three of those are backlist books which kind of has me excited. It’s March and per usual, we are expecting a snowstorm this Sunday. At least it’s on a day I can stay home!!!

    • Tammy

Good luck getting your snow day! I wish I had even the slightest chance of that here in California, but nope. I’m the same way with mixed review books, I’m always curious to see how I feel.

    • Tammy

I would definitely recommend Schwab’s newer books, I think she gets better with every one:-)

  4. I look forward to your review of The Witch’s Kind. I wonder if it was my review that pushed you over the edge re NCT? I still maintain that it’s a very unusual book and I think the first 30% is enough probably to put quite a few people off, but I pushed on through that and the story became something different. It’s not a book that you really come away from saying you enjoyed! Very unusual but I was pleased to finish it.

Yes, your review of NCT is making me excited to check it out, sometimes those mixed reviews really work in my favor:-)

  5. Wild Country was so good, and I loved that it was a standalone but revisited a lot of the side characters from the original series because part of it takes place concurrently with the final book! I’m also pretty excited about the V.E. Schwab book and that it got a re-issue, I am supposed to get a copy soon. And wow, I can’t remember the last time you said right out that you hated a book, The Dysasters must have been a doozy! Can’t wait to read that review lol.

    • Tammy

Ha ha, yeah, I worked on my review for The Dysasters today and I need to cut it, it’s way too long! Why is it so much easier to write negative reviews??

  6. The Vela sounds so fab with that lineup! And Never- Contented Things has me super curious! It looks freaky. 🙂

Also The Municipalists I think looks good.

  7. Never Contented Thing sounds really interesting, but I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews too. I think maybe it’s more a problem with expectations, like people were expecting A, but the book was actually B. I’ll be curious to see your review! And I really need to get started on The Municipalists too!

Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of readers thought it would be like The Cruel Prince and were really disappointed when it wasn’t. Going in knowing that, I’m hoping it works for me!
